Definitions
- This invention relates to an outlet tap assembly for a liquid filled flexible packaging bag such as that employed in the well-known bag-in-box type of packaging. More particularly, but not exclusively, the invention is concerned with liquid filled flexible packaging bags that are to be used in reusable boxes such as those described in my international patent application entitled “FLEXIBLE PACKAGING BAG AND SUPPORT UNIT” published under no WO 01/00504 or my co-pending international patent application entitled “A BOX FOR A LIQUID FILLED PACKAGING BAG” published under no WO 02/092462.
- the invention relates to an outlet tap assembly of the general type described in my international patent application entitled "LIQUID PACKAGING SYSTEM AND COMPONENTS THEREOF" published under no WO 01/00503 in which a tap is located at one end of a tubular outlet member that has a spike at its opposite end for penetrating the flexible side wall of a filled flexible packaging bag by piercing the material and causing it to deform onto the outer surface of the outlet member.
- the outlet member has a lateral aperture communicating between an inner region of the bore of the tube and an end region of the outlet member that is to be located in the interior of a flexible packaging bag, in use.
- the tap is used to control the flow of liquid through the tubular outlet member from the interior of the flexible packaging bag.
- liquid as used in this specification is intended to include semi-liquids such as those that may flow rather slowly or
- an outlet tap assembly comprising a tubular outlet member having a bore therein, a tap at one end (operatively the outer end and hereinafter referred to as such) for controlling the flow of liquid through the bore, and a spike at the opposite end (operatively the inner end and hereinafter referred to such), at least one aperture communicating with the bore towards the inner end, an endless clamping surface encircling the outlet member between the aperture and tap, the clamping surface being formed between the outer surface of a portion of the outlet member communicating with the tap and a slightly enlarged portion towards the inner end; and a clamping element movable axially on the outlet member and having an endless clamping edge or surface for cooperation with the clamping surface on the outlet member with the material of a flexible packaging bag operatively clamped therebetween; the outlet tap assembly being characterized in that co-operating formations are provided that are fixed relative to each of the outlet element and clamping sleeve for urging the endless clamping edge or surface on the element axially into engagement
- clamping element to be formed integral with a mounting flange adapted for mounting the tap relative
- a tap assembly of the general type described above wherein communication between a bore through a tubular outlet member and the outside of the inner end region thereof is achieved by way of an integral lattice of helically extending webs of material defining a series of apertures of generally diamond shape extending around the periphery of the outlet member.
- a further feature of this aspect of the invention provides for the webs of material to be flexible so that the said lattice is axially compressible to deform and substantially close the generally diamond shaped apertures at least whilst axial pressure is applied to said lattice.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic sectional elevation showing the spiked end of an outlet member of one embodiment of tap assembly according to the invention at a stage at which it has just penetrated a flexible packaging bag wall;
- Figure 2 is a similar elevation but showing the outlet member introduced further into the bag and also illustrating the outside of the tap assembly (i.e. not in section);
- Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the tap assembly in the final clamped and locked position
- Figure 4 is an isometric view of the clamping element unit alone showing the cam formations associated therewith;
- Figure 5 is a schematic side view illustrating the principle of operation of a second embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 6 is a schematic side view illustrating the principle of operation of a third embodiment of the invention.
- an outlet tap assembly generally indicated by numeral (1) includes an outlet unit, generally indicated by numeral (2), having a tubular outlet member (3) of circular shape in cross-section with an integral spike (4) of substantially coaxial right circular conical shape formed coaxially at one end, the operatively inner end and herein termed the inner end.
- the other end, herein termed the outer end, of the outlet member has formed integral with it an operatively vertical transverse tubular tap body (5) that
- P015-2PCT 2003-02-18 receives a relatively rotatable tubular closure member (6) having a port (7) that can be rotated into and out of registration with the bore (8) of the outlet member in order to open and close the tap.
- the operatively upper end of the closure member (6) has an integral finger grip (9) whilst the operatively lower end (10) forms the tap outlet.
- outlet member is such that the spike can be introduced through the wall (11) of a flexible packaging bag (12) of liquid as illustrated progressively in Figures 1 , 2 and 3, and as more fully described in my international patent application WO 01/00503.
- a circumferential series of apertures (13) that in this instance are formed by crossed helically extending integral webs of material that between them form a lattice defining a series of circumferentially elongate diamond shaped apertures.
- the material is preferably sufficiently flexible so that the apertures can be substantially closed by the application of axial force between the spike and tubular member whilst the spike is being passed through the wall of the packaging bag.
- the same effect could be achieved by utilizing a plurality, typically two, three or four, of helically extending integral webs of material that are parallel and not interconnected by any crossed webs of material.
- the apertures are located at a slightly enlarged inner region (14a) of the tubular member and this enlarged zone communicates with the outer surface (14) of the remainder of the tubular member through an endless clamping surface (15) encircling the outlet member.
- the clamping surface could be of simple truncated conical shape.
- Axially slidable along the outlet member is a combined clamping element and mounting bracket unit generally indicated by numeral (16), the unit being composed of three integral elements, namely, an endless clamping edge (17)
- P01 5 2PCT 2003-02- 18 surrounding an aperture through a mounting bracket (18) the radially inner region of which actually forms the clamping element and a pair of diametrically opposed flanges (19) located on opposite sides of the aperture (20) through the combined clamping element (16) on its operatively outer side, that is to say the side opposite the endless clamping edge (17).
- the diameter of the aperture (20) is approximately the same in that the outer diameter of the slightly enlarged region (14a) is of the outlet member so that the combined clamping element can be introduced onto the outlet member by pressing the enlarged region through it. The combined clamping element is then held substantially captive on the outlet member.
- the mounting bracket has a surrounding groove (21) in its peripheral edge for receiving an edge of an aperture through the wall of a box (not shown) in which a liquid packaging bag is to be stored in well known manner.
- the mounting bracket can be adapted for use in combination with a box as described in my international patent application number WO 01/00504 or WO 02/092462.
- the combined clamping element and mounting bracket is orientated such that the endless clamping edge (17) is directed for cooperation with the clamping surface (15) encircling the outlet member.
- the flanges (19) extend from the bracket in the direction away from the endless clamping edge (17) and each has an outer end edge (23) that is formed into a shaped cam surface for cooperation with the transverse tap body (5) that acts as a cam follower.
- the arrangement is such that the tap body, in one orientation, fits between the two flanges (19) so that an appreciable amount of relative axial movement is enabled between the combination clamping element and the outlet member, as shown clearly in Figures 1 and 2.
- the tap body is located in this position during the penetration procedure illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 so that sufficient of the
- P0152PCT 2003-02-18 length of the outlet member projects beyond the clamping edge to enable proper introduction of the spike and inner end of the outlet member into the flexible packaging bag to be achieved.
- the outlet member is moved axially outwards so that the combination clamping element, and thus its endless clamping edge (17), moves towards the clamping surface (15) on the outlet member.
- the cam surfaces (23) are arranged such that when the tap body (5) is located approximately at the outer ends of the flanges (19) it can be rotated by 90 degrees and the cam surfaces (23) cooperate with the tap body as a cam to pull the outlet member and in so doing clamp a doubled over ring (25) of the material of the flexible packaging bag between the endless clamping edge (17) and the clamping surface (15) as shown clearly in Figure 3.
- cam surfaces (23) are shaped such that a snap lock is achieved in the final installed position of the tap in which it is operatively vertical, as shown in Figure 3, as opposed to being in a position at right angles thereto during the procedure that is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
- a highly effective seal is thereby achieved in a simple and substantially foolproof manner.
- the arrangement can accommodate any normal fluctuations or differences in thickness of materials of different packaging bags.
- P0152PCT 2003-02- 18 flanges and their cam surfaces are omitted and replaced by a pair of diametrically opposite slots or grooves in the inner surface of a tubular wall forming the clamping element and that are indicated in Figure 5 as external slots (27).
- Each slot extends axially and has a transverse branch slot indicated by numeral (27a), to form a clamping and locking arrangement that cooperates with pins or lugs (28) that extend radially out of the side wall of the outlet member (29).
- Figure 6 illustrates a similar arrangement but one in which the slots or grooves are replaced by a helical slot or groove (30) that cooperates with pins or lugs (31) such that the helical slot or groove forms the cam surface and the pins or lugs form the cam follower.
- some sort of catch or stop arrangement (32) is provided for arresting the pins or lug in a final position in which the bag is effectively clamped.
