Definitions
- This invention relates to a system for infusion of medication to a patient, where the system consists of a wet part, a control part and a personal digital device.
- the wet part and the control part forms a infusion device, carried by a person, who has the infusion means planted on a suitable place on the body for infusion of the medication, and the personal digital device is able to radio communicate with the infusion device.
- the infusion device has a control part, which is connected mechanically to the infusion device, and which control part is used by the patient to communicate information's to the infusion device.
- a remote device is therefore offered together with the infusion pump, by which the patient is able to give little information like a bolus rate of infusion, if such is needed.
- This remote device is only capable of giving this few information's, and is as such an additional personal device to be carried. It is an object of this invention to reduce the numbers of personal devices the patient has to carry. This object is achieved by using a general digital device as the personal digital device, which in addition can radio communicate with the infusion device.
- the personal digital device is able to receive information' s concerning the infusion of medication, and the infusion device itself, from said infusion device.
- information's concerning the infusion of medication and the infusion device itself, from said infusion device.
- the personal digital device is a portable device.
- the patient is able to control the rate of infusion any time and any place, without the need for additional equipment.
- the system further comprises a sensing device for sensing the parameter in the body, which is to be controlled by the infusion of medication.
- the sensor can then communicate the value of the sensed parameter to the infusion device, whereby infusion of medication can be controlled in accordance with the value of the sensed parameter.
- infusion device with sensor is able continuously adjust the rate of infusion of medication to the need, and a more accurate rate of infusion can be obtained.

- figure 1 is indicated a person as position 1, who needs medico treatment. This could be a diabetic patient, who needs to balance the level of glucose in the blood by infusion of insulin, but is not limited to this purpose.
- FIG 2 an infusion device, which is to be carried by the person 1.
- the infusion device consists, among others, of a medication containing part 2, build of the parts in figure 4 and 5.
- the part in figure 4 is to be refereed to as a wet part 12, and consist of a housing 17 with a flexible hose 15, ending in a connection part 16. Inside the housing 17 medications are contained, indicated as position 13, and means for dosage the medication, indicated as position 14
- the wet part 12 could be either a disposable part, or a rechargeable part. In case the wet part 12 is a disposable part, all basic control an actuation means are placed in a control part, 11 at figure 5. The disposable part is hereby held as cheep as possible.
- the part 11 is formed as two shell parts 18 and 19, hinged together at position 20.
- the wet part is placed in one of the shells 18 and 19, whereby the hose 15 fits the two cutouts 21.
- the radio communication is in order to give the patient the ability of adjusts the rate of infusion of medication, or to give the infusion device needed information' s in order to perform the correct rate of infusion. Those information could be given directly on the control device 11, but for the patient it is more convenient to give the information's as radio communication, whereby the information's could be given at public places without actually showing the infusion device .
- the infusion device 2 in figure 2 further consists of a connector part 5, a flexible hose part 6 and a port of entry 4.
- the port of entry 4 is a plaster 7, fixed to the hose 6, and a needle in which the hose ends.
- the port of entry part 4 is placed on a suitable place on the body, with the needle sticking through the skin, and is held in place by the plaster 7. Medication is now able to flow from the wet part 12 , under control of the control part 11, through the connector 5 and the hose 6, and into the patient through the needle 8.
- the connector part 5 is for the purpose of disconnecting the infusion device 2 from the port of entry 4, either during personal sanitation or during replacement of either port of entry 4 or infusion device 2.
- FIG. 3 is shown personal digital device, like a portable electronic calendar or a mobile phone.
- the personal digital device 3 has a display part 9, and buttons whereby the person is able to communicate with the device 3.
- the personal digital device 3 further contains the possibility of performing radio communication with the infusion device 2, and it contains soft ware fitted to the infusion device. It is hereby possible for the patient to communicate information's to the infusion device 2, and to get information's about the infusion device 2 from same. The patient have no need for an additional digital device to communicate with the infusion device, but can simply have a by him already existing digital device adopted also to be able to communicate with the infusion device.
- This is indicated as figure 7, where the radio communication to the infusion device 2 from the personal digital device 3 is indicated as position 25, and the radio communication from the infusion device 2 to the personal digital device 3 is indicated as position 26.
- the infusion system could further comprise a sensor in or at the patient, for the purpose of measuring the level more continuously. This sensor is indicated as position 22 in figure 7, where it is able to communicate the measured level to the infusion device 2, via radio communication 27.
- the infusion system will then form a closed loop control system, where the personal digital device 3 will be the device from where the control parameters for the closed loop control is set, and will be the device to which information's about the closed loop control is send.
- the infusion device 2 will then contain a limited memory, in which information's are stored, until they are loaded to the personal digital device 3.
- the sensor 22 is shown in figure 6, where position 24 indicates the sensing area, which is in contact, continuously or frequently, with the compound or tissue in which the level is to be measured.
- Position 23 indicates the housing of the sensor, with in case of an implantable sensor should be of a biocompatible material or have a biocompatible coating.
- the personal digital device might preferably be portable, but could as well be stationary device. Only must the communication between infusion device and personal digital device occur under safe conditions, whereby is to be understood a communication which not can be interfered by other communications.
