- the scale carrying member is rotatable about a first axis, and includes first and second positioning features located on the scale carrying member, said first positioning feature being aligned with said first axis; whereby the location device may be positioned at the first positioning feature and then moved to a subsequent location which is positioned with respect to said first positioning feature along a second axis at an angle to said first axis; and whereby the scale carrying member may be rotated about said first axis until the second positioning feature is at the subsequent location, resulting in the scale carrying member being aligned with the plane of the first and second axes.

- adjustable connection means are provided to connect the readhead to the second part of the machine, such that the readhead and second part of the machine may be connected together whilst the orientation is at least part defined by the reference location and wherein the adjustable connection means may be locked once they are connected to maintain the orientation of the readhead.
