Definitions
- the invention relates to an inserting apparatus provided with: a product assembly path comprising a pusher conveyor and at least one feeder for feeding a, possibly composite, product which is to be placed in an envelope, an inserting module provided with a magazine for envelopes and means for positioning the envelopes in a receiving position, in which receiving position, in use, the product coming from the product assembly path is placed in the envelope, - a discharge path in which the envelope with the product placed therein is discharged rom the inserting module for further processing.
- a product assembly path comprising a pusher conveyor and at least one feeder for feeding a, possibly composite, product which is to be placed in an envelope
- an inserting module provided with a magazine for envelopes and means for positioning the envelopes in a receiving position, in which receiving position, in use, the product coming from the product assembly path is placed in the envelope, - a discharge path in which the envelope with the product placed therein is discharged rom the inserting module for further processing.
- Each feeder feeds a product to be placed in an envelope to a position on the pusher conveyor, so that thus composite products can be obtained.
- a product can comprise, for instance, a main document with a number of annexes.
- the product which may or may not be composite, is supplied to an inserting module.
- the inserting module was provided with a normal drum feeder with the aid of which an envelope was pulled from the feeder magazine.
- the envelope taken from the magazine was taken over by a gripper, which placed the envelope in a receiving position.
- the gripper was opened, so that the product coming from the product assembly path could be placed in the envelope.
- the envelope was again engaged by the same gripper to be conveyed further for discharging and sealing the envelope.
- a drawback of the known apparatus is that the envelope from the magazine must be engaged several times by different grippers. First, by the gripper of the drum feeder which takes the envelope from a magazine. Second, by the gripper that brings the envelope taken from the magazine to the receiving position to subsequently release the envelope again, so that the product can be slid into the envelope. Subsequently, the envelope is again to be engaged by a gripper to enable further conveyance thereof. Every instance of engagement involves the risk that the envelope is not properly engaged and that conveyance of the respective envelope in the inserting module comes to a halt. It will be clear that such an event seriously impedes the progress of the inserting process and that therefore such an event should be prevented as far as possible.
- the invention contemplates an inserting apparatus of the type described in the opening paragraph hereof, without the above- described disadvantages.
- Such an inserting apparatus is characterized, according to the invention, in that the inserting module is provided with an endless conveyor with grippers, such as, for instance, a toothed belt or chain with grippers, the endless conveyor following a path such that the grippers thereof can engage an envelope contained in the magazine and, as a result of the travel of the conveyor, can pull the envelope from the magazine, and the grippers can position a respective envelope in another part of the path in the receiving position.
- grippers such as, for instance, a toothed belt or chain with grippers
- the inserting module being provided with an endless conveyor with grippers, such as, for instance, a toothed belt or chain with grippers, while the endless conveyor follows a path such that the grippers thereof can engage an envelope contained in the magazine and, as a result of the travel of the conveyor, can pull the envelope from the magazine, and further can position a respective envelope in another part of the path in the receiving position, the necessity of having to take over the respective envelope into another gripper each time is eliminated.
- the number of such transfers is thus limited to only one, viz. the transfer which is necessary to take the envelope out of the magazine.
- Arranged along the length of the endless conveyor are several grippers, so that the endless conveyor holds several envelopes at the same time along the length of the path.
- a release position that is, the position where a respective gripper releases an envelope taken out of the magazine, is settable, so that envelopes of different sizes can be processed.
- the invention further relates to a method for placing a product in an envelope using an inserting apparatus according to the invention.
- an envelope is taken from a magazine by a gripper and by that same gripper is brought to a receiving position where the gripper releases the envelope in a position in which it abuts against a stop, while the, possibly composite, products are supplied from a product assembly path, the product conveyance being taken over by intermediate conveying means, which slide the product into the envelope present in the receiving position and subsequently convey the product with the envelope further to discharge means, which discharge means convey the envelope filled with the product to a discharge path in which the envelope is sealed.
- Fig. 1 shows a front view of the product assembly path of an exemplary embodiment of the inserting apparatus according to the invention
- Fig. 2 shows a front view of the inserting module
- Fig. 3 shows a top plan view of the inserting module
- Fig. 4 shows a right-hand side elevation of the inserting apparatus which is represented in Figs. 2 and 3;
- Fig. 5 schematically shows the parts relevant to the operation of the inserting apparatus in front view
- Figs. 6a-6e schematically show front views of the relevant parts of the inserting apparatus, representing the product positions in the different stages of placing the product in an envelope
- Figs. 6a'-6e' show a top plan view of the envelopes and the positions of these envelopes relative to the stops and the products to be placed therein, in stages corresponding to those represented in Figs. 6a-6e;
- Fig. 7 shows a graph of the speed curve of the intermediate conveyor means;
- Fig. 8 shows a similar side elevation to that represented in Fig. 6b, in which smaller envelopes with smaller products are being processed.
- Fig. 1 shows the product assembly path 1 of an exemplary embodiment of the inserting apparatus according to the invention.
- the product assembly path 1 comprises a pusher conveyor which is not clearly visible in Fig. 1, but is indicated in Figs. 2 and 5 with the reference numeral 2.
- the pusher conveyor 2 is provided with pushers 3 with the aid of which products, such as, for instance, documents, are advanced.
- the product assembly path is provided with a number of feeders 4 which are arranged above the pusher conveyor 2.
- Each feeder 4 is provided with a magazine 5 in which a stack of products is included, and with a gripper drum 6 by means of which a lowermost product can be taken off the stack and be placed in front of a pusher 3 of the pusher conveyor 2. Due to each pusher passing a number of feeders 4, thus a composite product can be formed which comprises, for instance, a main document with a number of annexes. In itself, such a product assembly path is already known from practice and therefore does not merit further explanation. Applicant, among others, has been marketing such an assembler for a number of years. It will be clear that instead of drum feeders 4, feeders of a different type, known per se, are eligible.
- the inserting module 7 Downstream of the product assembly path, that is, on the right- hand side of Fig. 1, the inserting module 7 is disposed.
- the inserting module 7 is provided with a magazine 8 for placing a stack of envelopes therein. Further, means are provided for positioning the envelopes in a receiving position, in which receiving position, in use, the product coming from the product assembly path 1 is placed in the envelope. After placement of the product in the envelope, the envelope with the product placed therein is led to a discharge path 9 for further processing.
- the conveying direction of the discharge path is perpendicular to the conveying direction of the inserting module.
- the inserting module is provided with a control with a control panel 11.
- Fig. 5 schematically representing the relevant parts of the inserting module are, while leaving out all kinds of technical detail information.
- Fig. 5 clearly shows the magazine 8 in which a stack of envelopes can be received. Also clearly visible is the pusher conveyor 2 with the pushers 3 of the product assembly path 1.
- Fig. 5 further shows clearly that the inserting module is provided with an endless conveyor 12 on which the grippers 13 are mounted. In the present exemplary embodiment, the endless conveyor 12 carries six grippers 13.
- the endless conveyor 12 follows a path such that the grippers 13 thereof can engage an envelope present in the magazine 8 and, as a result of the travel of the conveyor 12, can pull the envelope from the magazine 8, while further the grippers 13 can position a respective envelope in another part of the path in the receiving position, a downstream end of which is defined by a stop 14.
- the stop 14 is represented in two positions. The left-hand position is used when small envelopes are processed, while the right-hand position is used when large envelopes are processed.
- the stop 14 can also be positioned in intermediate positions.
- Fig. 5 further shows clearly that along the path of the conveyor 12 cam tracks 15, 16 are arranged, while the grippers 13 of the conveyor 12 are provided with cam followers 17, 18 which, in use, move through the cam tracks 15, 16 and effect the opening and closure of the grippers 13.
- the position of the stop 14 can be set depending on the size of the envelopes to be processed. It is therefore also necessary that the position where a respective gripper 13 releases an envelope be adjustable as well, so that envelopes of different sizes can be processed.
- this release position is settable in that a cam track section 19 is adjustable in the conveying direction.
- the stop 14 mentioned earlier is controllable, so that it can be brought into a hold position and a release position. In use, an envelope runs against the stop 14 which is in the hold position, while the envelope is being released by a gripper 13. The respective envelope continues to rest against that stop 14.
- the inserting module is provided with the intermediate conveyor means which are arranged for taking over the conveyance of the product P from the pusher conveyor 2 of the product assembly path 1.
- the intermediate conveyor means are designed as an endless conveyor 20 with pushers 21.
- the endless intermediate conveyor 20 is driven with a controllable drive, so that the speed with which the product can be slid into the envelope by the intermediate conveyor 20 can be varied.
- the intermediate conveyor 20 takes over the conveyance of the product, which is initially effected by the pusher 3 of the pusher conveyor 2 of the product assembly path 1, and slides the product into an envelope which is disposed in the receiving position.
- these discharge means comprise three endless conveyor belts 22, 23, 24.
- One conveying part of a first conveyor belt 22 is disposed at least partly against a conveying part of a second conveyor belt 23.
- the envelope with product advanced by the intermediate conveyor 20 is moved into the nip defined by the two conveyor belts 22, 23, so that the envelope with product is clamped between the two conveying parts. Thereafter, the envelope is conveyed further at a higher speed and ejected onto the discharge path 9 mentioned earlier. Further, in Fig.
- the inserting module is provided with a suction cup 25 for pulling up an opening edge of the envelope disposed in the receiving position.
- a movably arranged downholder 26 is provided, for holding down the product to be inserted, under the pulled-up opening edge. The displacement of the movable downholder 26 involves a reciprocating movement for sliding the downholder into the opening of the envelope after the suction cup has pulled up the opening edge.
- the magazine 8 too is provided with a movably arranged suction cup 27 for pulling down a lowermost envelope present in the magazine 8.
- the magazine 8 is further provided with a movably arranged stack support 28 for supporting a lower edge of the lowermost envelope of a stack of envelopes disposed in the magazine.
- the movement of the suction cup 27 and the stack support 28 is energized by a controllable drive which drives a cam disc 29 which, via a transmission, such as, for instance, a rod system, is dynamically connected with the suction cup 27 and the stack support 28.
- the discharge path 9 has a discharge conveying direction which extends perpendicularly to the conveying direction of the inserting module 7.
- the discharge path 9 is provided with a stop 30 which is clearly visible in Fig. 6 and against which products supplied by the discharge conveyor belts 22, 23, 24 come to abut, so that they are aligned.
- the discharge path 9 is provided with a vacuum conveyor belt and with sealing means not represented in the drawing, for sealing the envelope.
- These sealing means comprise, for instance, an apparatus for wetting the sealing flap of the envelope and a guideway for gradually folding over the sealing flap during advancement of the envelope along the discharge path 9.
- a hot-melt glue dispensing unit may be provided.
- the intermediate conveyor 20 moves the envelope with the product further in the direction of the discharge conveyor belts 22, 23, 24 and the envelope is subsequently conveyed further between the conveying parts of the conveyor belts 22, 23 until it comes to lie against the stop 30 to be subsequently discharged in the discharge path in transverse direction.
- Fig. 7 shows the curve of the speed of an intermediate conveyor pusher 21 during the cycle represented in Fig. 6. Clearly, the speed varies and does not fall back to 0 at any time.
- Fig. 8 shows a similar series of figures to that represented in Fig. 6b, but the process represented in Fig. 8 is carried out with considerably smaller envelopes. Clearly visible is that the stop 14 has been moved relative to the gripper conveyor 12. Although not represented in Fig. 8, in addition to the stop 14, also the cam track section 19 has been displaced to move the release position of the grippers 13.
