Abstract
Description
Verfahren zum festen Verbinden von thermoplastischen Elastomeren (TPE) mit einer metallischen OberflächeProcess for the firm connection of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) with a metallic surface
The invention relates to a method for firmly connecting TPE, preferably TPE-S, to a metallic surface.
At present, hard-soft connections with TPE and TPE-S are only possible on the basis of certain non-metallic plastics. TPE or TPE-S are only connected to metal or metallized surfaces by mechanical anchoring or gluing. However, connections of this type are not resistant to visible parts in use, easily detach at the contact surfaces not provided with anchors and liquid can even penetrate between the two surfaces, which can lead to corrosion and damage to a component.
The object of the invention is therefore to develop a method with which a firm, form-fitting, watertight and difficult-to-release adhesive bond is created between the TPE or TPE-S and a metallic surface.
This object is achieved by the features of patent claim 1. According to the invention, the cleaned metallic surface to be coated with TPE or TPE-S is treated with a primer which is based on chemically modified, low-chlorinated polypropylene before it is coated. The primer is preferably dried dust-free at room temperature or elevated temperature before the TPE is applied. However, it is also possible to spray on the TPE immediately after the primer has been applied, so that the primer dries under the TPE layer. The volatile substances of the primer must diffuse into the TPE.
In order to obtain a firm bond between the metallic surface and the TPE, the invention furthermore requires that the primer be brought to a temperature which is above its melting temperature during or after the application of the liquid TPE. This is possible on the one hand before applying the TPE by heating the metallic surface or the metallic workpiece itself - preferably at a temperature between 40 to 100 ° C - but on the other hand this can also be achieved by only after applying the TPE to the primed (adhesive) metallic surface of this composite is annealed in an oven. This results in a physical adhesive bond without mechanical claws, which makes it it is possible to produce solid and watertight connections for optical and technical applications. However, the final strength is only reached after a few hours.
Furthermore, the association also allows the TPE types approved according to the Food or Drug Act, which can thus be used for skin contact, the food or the diagnostic area. The invention can be used with all metallic surfaces of any components. Such a connection according to the invention can be used to increase the grip up to technical hard-soft connections for the purpose of sealing or damping.
Basically, an application for all everyday objects is conceivable, especially where an optically permanent design, good grip of high-quality metallic goods, tightness, damping on a metallic surface are required. However, any other application is possible in which plastic is required to achieve certain advantages on metallic surfaces. The invention can also be applied to cutlery for domestic use, to manufacturing machines or other consumer goods, provided the surface is made of metallic material to which the TPE is to be applied. However, housing openings can also be closed by forming a membrane. Before the TPE is applied to the surface, it must always be provided with a closed, homogeneous primer film.
The properties of the primer are determined by the features of patent claim 2, so that particularly high and uniform adhesive values of the TPE are achieved on metallic surfaces. The higher the solids content, the lower the adhesion because the primer layer thickness increases and an adhesion breakage can occur in the primer itself. If the temperature is too low, there is poor adhesion; if the temperature is too high, use on some metal-coated plastics becomes problematic because, on the one hand, many plastics tend to warp / deform and, on the other hand, blistering can occur on metal-coated plastics. To avoid these disadvantages, a softening temperature in the range from approximately 75 ° C. to 95 ° C. is particularly advantageous.
According to the features of claim 3, the primer can be applied by spraying, dipping, rolling, printing or similar methods which are generally known for applying thin, liquid layers. It is advantageous that according to the Features of claim 4, the layer thickness is between 2 and 8 microns. This thickness range has proven to be particularly advantageous because optimal strengths are produced in the cohesive adhesive bond in this area.
According to the features of patent claim 5, the primer layer is air-dried in a dirt and liquid-protected manner, the drying time at an outside temperature of approximately 20 ° C. being 15 to 30 minutes in the thickness range specified above.
According to the features of claim 6, however, the primer layer can also be dried by baking, a drying time of at least 1 minute being required for the above-mentioned layer thicknesses at a preferred drying temperature between 80 and 100 ° C.
The primer is based on a chemically modified, low-chlorinated polypropylene, which is characterized by a special affinity for polyolefin plastics or copolymers. The primer is almost colorless, opaque and elastic. An application with more than 5% solids content is also possible, but this means thicker layers and lower final strengths due to a resulting cohesive break in the primer.
The TPE adheres to the metallic surface based on a purely physical process of swelling, melting, diffusing and evaporation of the solvents on the surface. What remains are film-forming resins. A water-resistant and watertight adhesive bond, the bond strength of which goes beyond the intrinsic strength of the TPE, is only created by tempering the substrate to the required process temperature inside or outside the injection mold, especially with metals.
Besonders vorteilhaft ist es gemäß den Merkmalen des Patentanspruchs 7, wenn das TPE dicht unterhalb der maximal zulässigen Verarbeitungstemperatur gespritzt wirdAccording to the features of patent claim 7, it is particularly advantageous if the TPE is injected just below the maximum permissible processing temperature
However, according to the features of claim 9, it is also possible to heat the metallic surface of the workpiece to the required temperature of about 40 to 100 ° C. before applying the primer, to apply the primer and then to subject it to dust-protected air drying. The already preheated tool with the metallic surface can then be inserted into the soft mold and the TPE applied, preferably sprayed, onto the metallic surface. The shape of the TPE can be any shape in a three-dimensional space. to take. After the workpiece has dwelled and the TPE has hardened, the injection mold can be opened and the tool with the sprayed TPE on the metallic surface can be removed from it.
However, it is also possible according to the features of claim 10 to apply the primer and then immediately insert and close the workpiece with the metallic surface in the temperature-controlled injection mold and then wait until the primer has dried in this form and the metallic one Surface or the workpiece has reached the required temperature. Then the TPE is sprayed onto the metallic surface. After the TPE has hardened, the workpiece can be removed from the injection mold.
According to the features of claim 11, the metallic surface can be a galvanic plastic surface, a layer provided with or interspersed with metals of any nature or a bare metal layer.
According to the features of claim 12, any workpiece, on the metallic surface of which a TPE is firmly attached according to the method of claim 1, is also protected.
