Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a pistol grip for a hand tool, such as a welding gun, which pistol grip consists of a working part incorporating an electrical circuit, and a handle, which is connected to the working part by means of a ball joint, which incorporates a hollow ball, which is arranged to move freely within a socket and which is provided with slots extending through the wall of the ball.
  • a pistol grip for a welding gun is known from US-A-3 109 916 and, compared with a conventional pistol grip without a ball joint between the handle and the electrode holder, offers ergonomic advantages in that the ball joint enables the user to assume a comfortable working posture at all times, while also facilitating work in confined spaces by enabling the user to adjust the handle to the most favourable setting in every instance.
  • a disadvantage of the known solution is that the welding electrode cannot be activated from the handle and that the Gabling running through the handle to the said device makes it difficult to adapt the handle to electrode holders other than that described in the US document.
  • the purpose of the invention is to achieve a universally usable pistol grip for a hand tool, such as a welding gun, which pistol grip, by virtue of the handle which comprises part of it, is designed to enable an electrical circuit in the working part to be activated, and which pistol grip shall be universally usable with a large number of different hand tools, including welding guns.
  • pistol grip is characterised by the fact that the ball joint can be locked in the desired position by means of a tightening device which, in for the purpose of locking the ball joint, is arranged to act on a tapered element extending into the ball, the tapered element pressing the periphery of the ball against the inner wall of the socket, the handle being provided with a trigger, which acts on a flexible pushrod, which is supported and is free to move, partly within a passage running through the tapered element and exiting at the upper end of the tapered element, and partly within a passage running through the socket and exiting at an attachment for the working part, which pushrod is, at the attachment end, by means of two electrically conducting contact devices, arranged to bridge two poles of the electrical circuit in the working part in order to activate same.
  • the solution in accordance with the invention makes it particularly easy to attach the pistol grip to different hand tools, such a welding gun, incorporating an electrical circuit and to activate the said circuit from the handle, the ball joint enabling the working part to adjusted to many different and, from an ergonomic viewpoint, favourable settings relative to the handle.
  • the tightening device should preferably be a locking screw extending a distance along the handle from its (the handle's) end. This enables the handle grip to be located very close to the ball joint, which is ergonomically advantageous.
