Definitions
- the present invention relates to an improved truck for a skateboard, together with a skateboard utilizing one or more of these improved trucks.
- Skateboards typically comprise a deck having front and rear trucks mounted on the underside thereof which support front and rear axles respectively.
- the front axle typically carries two wheels and the rear axle also typically carries two wheels.
- the present invention aims to provide an improved or alternative type of truck which is capable of carrying at least four wheels.
- a skateboard utilizing such an improved or alternative truck may thus comprise at least eight wheels.
- Such a skateboard may then readily be used in the same situations that traditional skateboards are used, but additionally may be used in further situations and circumstances in which traditional skateboards may not be suitable for use.
- skateboard truck By the use of this term, reference is made to the general form of steering mechanism typically mounted to the underside of a skateboard deck.
- Conventional skateboard trucks generally adhere to a basic design in which an axle pivots about an arm attached at one end to the centre portion of the axle. The other end of the pivot arm is loosely fitted into a plastic cup mounted in a base plate that forms a ball-like joint.
- a pair of grommets usually made of a plastic material, are usually mounted on a vertical kingpin fixed to the base plate on the side of the axle opposite the plastic cup. The grommets grasp a ring extending from the axle body so that the axle is suspended between the ball joint and grommets. By adjusting the kingpin, the tension on the grommets may be increased or decreased, thereby varying the balance between turning stability and turning ease.
- Such a conventional truck provides a wide ranging steering response whereby the axles swivel to create a finite turning radius when, by means of lateral weight shifts, the skateboarder tilts the deck about its longitudinal axis.
- the inherent suspension system within the truck smoothly and predictably resists the skateboarders efforts to tilt the deck, thus stabilising the skateboard during straight ahead riding and providing control over the steering response.
- This same inherent suspension system generates force that will quickly return the skateboard to the neutral, non-turning position after the skateboarder discontinues the lateral weight shift.
- the axle of a truck thus typically has two free ends, and in conventional skateboard design, a single skateboard wheel is mounted at each of the free ends, there thus being two wheels per truck.
- the improvement of the present invention constitutes the provision of a pair of dual wheel assemblies, one at each free end of a truck axle, each dual wheel assembly being mounted to the axle to freely pivot about the axle, independently of each other dual wheel assembly.
- the dual wheel assembly is a single rocker arm that carries wheels at both of its free ends, the single rocker arm being appropriately mounted to the truck axle in a location at or near the centre thereof.
- the rocker arms may include two angled portions, angled away from the centre thereof, so as to define a shallow V-shaped arrangement inverted in use.
- the two angled portions may be a single member, or may comprise two members rigidly secured to each other to provide the appropriate V-shaped arrangement.
- the rocker arm may be provided by two members hingedly secured at the centre thereof so as to be capable of movement towards or away from each other.
- the rocker arm may include a resilient means configured between the moveable members so as to provide a shock absorbing capability.
- the general V-shape is opened against the resilience of the resilient means, when the skateboarder mounts the board.
- the rocker arms are capable of absorbing varying degrees of bumps and impacts, shielding the skateboarder therefrom. This allows for multiple terrain usage, and use in a variety of situations not previously available to a skateboarder.
- Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of an improved truck in accordance with a first preferred embodiment of the present invention
- Figure 2 is a perspective side view from above a skateboard bearing two of the trucks illustrated in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 is a perspective side view from below the skateboard of Figure 2;
- Figure 4 is an illustrative exemplification of different possible angles for rocker arms for use with the truck of Figure 1 ;
- Figure 5 is a schematic side view of a second preferred embodiment of rocker arm for a truck similar to that illustrated in Figure 1 ;
- Figures 6(a) to 6(d) are a series of views of a third preferred embodiment of rocker arm for a truck similar to that illustrated in Figure 1.
- Illustrated in Figure 1 is a conventional truck 10 having an axle 12 with respective free ends 14 and 16 upon which, in conventional and normal use, a single skateboard wheel would each be placed.
- the improved truck of the present invention includes rocker arms 18 and 20 mounted in place of conventional skateboard wheels, each rocker arm 18 and 20 having mounted thereto a pair of wheels 22 and 24.
- Each of the rocker arms 18 and 20 are mounted on the axle 12 so as to be capable of independent pivotal movement thereabout, independent of each other rocker arm.
- FIG. 1 there is also illustrated a pair of abutment means 26 at or towards the free ends of the rocker arms 18 and 20.
- These abutment means are preferably configured so as to project beyond the outermost distance of the wheels, such that in use, the abutment means will contact the underside of the deck of a skateboard in preference to the wheels contacting the underside of the deck of the skateboard.
- These abutment means thus act to ensure that the wheels do not hit the deck causing the skateboard to brake.
- Figures 2 and 3 show generally the manner in which the improved truck of the present invention (as illustrated in Figure 1) would be used on the underside 28 of the deck 30 of a skateboard.
- Figure 3 clearly illustrates the independent pivotal movement capable by each of the rocker arms 18 and 20 of each truck.
- Figures 4 and 5 illustrate various embodiments for each of the rocker arms 18 and 20 for each truck.
- Figure 4 illustrates different angles at which the two members 32 and 34, which comprise the rocker arms 18 and 20, may be applied.
- the angle of inclination may be increased or decreased as required, thus altering the depth of the generally V-shaped arrangements of the members 32 and 34.
- the members 32 and 34 would be secured rigidly to each other such that there is no movement possible therebetween.
- FIG. 5 a shock absorbing version of the rocker arms 18 and 20 is illustrated.
- the version in solid lines shows the at rest position of a rocker arm 36 having configured between its two pivotably secured members 38 and 40, a resilient means in the form of a strong spring 42.
- the rocker arms may be made of any suitable material such as a suitably strong yet light metal or plastic. If made in a plastic material (such as an engineering grade plastic material, for instance 10% glass- filled Nylon 6) the rocker arms may be injection moulded in one piece and may have a configuration such as that illustrated in Figures 6(a) to 6 (d).
- the rocker arm 50 includes an aperture 52 for receiving the axle of a skateboard truck, together with bosses 54 and 56 having apertures 58 and 60 therethrough for receiving a skateboard wheel.
- the rocker arm 50 includes ribbing 62 along its length, which ribbing 62 defines a series of openings 64 therealong. The openings 64 allow for a reduction in weight of the rocker arm 50, while the ribbing 62 provides added strength.
