Best Mode for Carrying out the Invention
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings .
FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing a TV displaying system for use in a computer using a dual monitor having a main-display and a sub-display, according to a first embodiment of the present invention. FIG.2 is a block diagram showing a TV displaying system for use in a computer using a dual monitor having a main-display and a sub-display, according to a second embodiment of the present invention. FIG.3 is a flowchart view for explaining a protection process in a TV displaying system for use in a computer using a dual monitor having a main-display and a sub-display, according to the present invention. FIG. 4 is a flowchart view for explaining a TV displaying method in a TV displaying system for use in a computer using a dual monitor having a main-display and a sub-display, according to the present invention.
A dual monitor 20 used in the present invention includes a main-display 22, for example, having a 17" screen or so which provides a relatively larger display region and a sub-display 24, for example, having an 8" screen or so, which provides a relatively smaller display region.
As shown in FIG. 1 showing a first embodiment of the
present invention, the main-display 22 displays a first video signal supplied from a first VGA card 15 installed in a PCI slot or an AGP slot in a computer 10. The sub-display 24 displays a second video signal supplied from a second VGA card 13 installed in another slot.
Meanwhile, a TV tuner 40 receives a television signal under the control of the computer 10 and outputs the received television signal, in which the output signal can be selectively displayed on the main-display 22 or the sub-display 24.
For this purpose, the output signal from the TV tuner 40 is synthesized with the output signal from the first VGA card 15 or the second VGA card 13 by first and second video mixers 30 and 35, respectively. The operations of the first and second video mixers 30 and 35 are controlled by a monitor controller 42 which is controlled by the computer 10 via an I/O port 11.
Here, in the case that the second VGA card 13 is not connected to the computer 10, or to the sub-display 24, the monitor protector 44 detects whether the second VGA card 13 is not connected to the computer 10, or to the sub-display 24, and transfers the detected result to the monitor controller 42. Then, the monitor controller 42 stops the output of the second video mixer 30. Meanwhile, the monitor 20 is configured by a main-display 22 and a sub-display 24, so that a TV broadcasting received via the TV tuner 40 can be selectively
displayed on the main-display 22 or the sub-display 24, so that a user can watch the displayed TV broadcasting, in which case a TV broadcasting received via the TV tuner 40 need to be limited.to particular persons so that they cannot watch it.
For this purpose, a protection signal Sp is added in a TV signal for transmission, in order to enable the monitor to operate at a protection mode. The protection signal Sp is detected via the monitor protector 44. The monitor controller 42 uses the detected protection signal Sp, and thus limits the output of the TV signal among the first and second video mixers 30 and 35.
Then, in order to activate the operation of the first or second video mixer 30 or 35 whose output has been limited, a release code for releasing the protection signal Sp is used.
In other words, a release code is provided to a user using the computer 10, and then if the user inputs the release code into the computer 10, a TV signal added with the protection signal Sp is output via any one of the first and second video mixers 30 and 35.
Thatis, as shown in FIG.3, a TVsignal canbe transmitted and received at a protection mode or a non-protection mode. In the case that a TV signal is transmitted and received at a protection mode, it is checked whether a current mode is a protection mode (S10) . If the current mode is a protection mode, the monitor protector 44 confirms whether
a protection signal Sp is detected from the TV signal (Sll) . Then, it is checked whether a release code is input by a user (S12) . In the case that a release code has been input, the monitor controller 42 synthesizes the TV signal output from the TV tuner 40 with any one of the first and second video signals selected by a user, using any one of the selected first and second video mixers 30 and 35 (S13) , and displays the synthesized result on the main-display 22 or the sub-display 24. Meanwhile, if the current mode is not a protection mode in the result of confirmation in the protection mode confirmation step (S10), the TV signal is synthesized with the first or second video signal via the selected first or second video mixer 30 or 35. In addition, if the protection signal Sp is not detected or any release code is not input, the selected first or second video mixer 30 or 35 is turned off so that any video signal is not output.
The above-described protection signal Sp and the release code can be applied to a pay cable TV broadcasting reception system. In the case of an ordinary cable TV broadcasting for transmission, a broadcasting signal is scrambled through a scrambler and then the scrambled broadcasting signal is transmitted. Then, the scrambled broadcasting signal is discrambled through a discrambler installed in a cable TV set-top-box to thereby enable users to watch the broadcasting.
Thus, in the case that a user intends to watch a broadcasting such as a cable TV, using a personal computer
(PC) , an existing set-top-box should be installed to watch the broadcasting, which inconveniences users. However, the present invention adds a protection signal
Sp in a broadcasting signal and transmits the protection signal added broadcasting signal, and then provides a user with a release code for releasing the protection of the broadcasting signal. Accordingly, only a user who has been provided a release code can watch a broadcasting signal.
Also, when a user using the computer 10 accesses an information providing server which provides various information via the Internet, a protection signal is added and then transmitted so that data can be provided only in the case that a user is registered as a member in a corresponding website. Accordingly, the present invention can provide information to users with a thorough security.
In particular, the present invention can be applied to a website which provide adult information to which children or juveniles are prevented from approaching or a website which provides paid information, very efficiently.
Recently, member registration information cracked by a cracker is used to access a website illegally without paying any membership fees in order to use pay site information, which occurs very often. In this case, the present invention can be applied as a very proper method.
Meanwhile, the TV signal output from the TV tuner 40
varies in view of a screen in size according to a monitor displayed. That is, a resolution varies according to the size of the monitor display.
For example, in the case that a main-display 22 is a 17" screen and a sub-display 24 is an 8" screen, the TV signal need to be zoom-in or zoom-out processed in order to adjust a resolution according to the selected first or second video mixer 30 or 35, which enables the size of the screen to coincide with each other. For this purpose, as shown in FIG. 4, it is checked whether or not the TV tuner 40 operates (S20) . Then, it is checked whether a displayed monitor is the main-display 22 or the sub-display 24 (S21) .
As a result, if the monitor displayed is the main-display 22, the TV signal is zoom-out processed (S22) , to meet the screen size of the main-display 22, so that is canbe displayed on the main-display 22 (S23) . Ifthemonitor displayed is the sub-display 24, the TV signal is zoom-in processed (S25) to meet the screen size of the sub-display 24, so that is can be displayed on the sub-display 24 (S26) .
Meanwhile, although the first and second VGA cards 15 and 13 are used to output the first and second video signals which are displayed on the main-display 22 and the sub-display
24 in the first embodiment, a USB VGA card 14 receives video data which is input via a USB port 12 in the computer 10, and converts the received video data into a video signal, in the second embodiment of the present invention as shown
in FIG. 2, instead of the second VGA card 13. The other components of FIG. 2 have the same names and functions as those of the first embodiment of FIG. 1.
Referring to FIG. 2, a sub-display 24 has a smaller number of data displayed than that of a main-display 22. Accordingly, A USB VGA card 14 receives video data via a USB port 12 and converts it into a second video signal . Then, the second video signal is input to a second video mixer 35. The second video signal input in the second video mixer 35 is synthesized or not synthesized with a TV signal according to a user selection, to then be displayed on the sub-display 24.
Here, for reference, a data transmission rateper second in the USB port 12 will follow in comparison with other connection systems.
A USB has two kinds of transmission rates such as 12Mbits (high speed) and 1.5Mbits (low speed). A serial port has a transmission rate of 115Kbits (=0.115Mbits) . A standard parallel port has a transmission rate of 115Kbits (=0.115Mbits) . An ECP/EPP parallel port has a transmission rate of 3Mbytes. An IDE has a transmission rate of 3.3~16.7Mbytes . A SCSI has a transmission rate of 5Mbytes or lOMbytes.
Thus, the USB port 12 has a sufficient transmission rate so that video data can be displayed on the sub-display
24 having an 8" screen. In particular, although other peripheral devices, for example, a keyboard or mouse is
connected to the USB port 12, since an amount of data necessary for enabling them to operate is relatively small, video data displayed on the sub-display 24 can be transmitted without any burden .
Industrial Applicability
As described above, the present invention uses a dual monitor having a main-display and a sub-display, in which a data processing work in the computer is displayed via the main-display and a TV signal is displayed via the sub-display, to thereby enable a user to watch the TV while performing a computer work without any inconveniences .
Further, the TV signal can be displayed via any one selected from the main-display and the sub-display. Also, using the protection signal can control whether or not the dual monitor is used.
In other words, although the present invention has been describedwith respect to particularlypreferred embodiments, it is not limited in the above-described embodiments. It is apparent to one who is skilled in the art that there are many variations and modifications, without departing off the spirit of the present invention.
