Abstract

An inventive method for encoding wavelet-transformed video and image data, in which the video and image data comprise wavelet coefficients of a plurality of sub-bands, comprises the pooling of at least two wavelet coefficients to form a group (580, 590) of wavelet coefficients, this group (580, 590) of wavelet coefficients having wavelet coefficients from at least two different sub-bands. The method also comprises the comparison of the wavelet coefficients of said group (580, 590) with a predetermined threshold value in order to obtain an actual relation between each wavelet coefficient and the predetermined threshold value. If the actual relation of at least one wavelet coefficient is equal to a predetermined relation to the predetermined threshold value, the invention provides that the actual relation of each wavelet coefficient of the group (580, 590) to the threshold value is stored in order to obtain a significant word (600) for the group (580, 590) of wavelet coefficients. If the actual relation of each wavelet coefficient is not equal to the predetermined relation, the invention provides that the group (580, 590) is omitted.
