Abstract

A method of estimating noise in a speech signal spectrum, comprising: determining a noise level at each side of a harmonic peak (12, 14, 16, 42) of the speech signal spectrum; and interpolating using the noise levels determined at each side of the harmonic peak (12, 14, 16, 42) to estimate the noise level during the harmonic peak (12,14, 16, 42). The method is suited to estimating noise that varies during speech.
