Abstract

The invention relates to an agent for isolating radium from subterranean water, surface water and seepage water, in addition to drinking and mineral water, in particular from radioactive water contaminated by natural uranium and its natural disintegration products, in the form of a geopolymeric barium sulphate granulate. The radium is isolated from the contaminated water by means of an agent that consists of the following components: a geopolymeric powder, a hardener, barium sulphate, water and hydrogen peroxide. The homogeneous geopolymeric barium sulphate granulate produced from said components is characterised by a mineral structural material with great mechanical and chemical stability, in addition to a large internal surface area and the radium-specific adsorption capacity of fine-particle barium sulphate with a high loading capacity with respect to radium. The aim of the invention is to provide an efficient, cost-effective agent that reliably meets, guarantees or surpasses legal requirements, regulatory stipulations and water treatment standards in terms of reducing the radium activity concentration over the longest possible service life, that does not absorb additional ions or release the latter into the drinking and/or mineral water that is to be cleaned of radium and that incurs negligible costs and accumulates lower volumes for the requisite disposal and landfill.
