Abstract

The invention provides a boundary protection system and a method for monitoring the position of approaching vehicles along an identified path with respect to a boundary along the line of the said path. The said system comprises: a boundary determining means for determining the position of a real or virtual boundary along the said identified path; a tracking means for tracking the position of at least one approaching vehicle with respect to the said boundary; and an alerting means responsive to at least part of an approaching vehicle crossing the said boundary, whereby to provide a collision warning indication. In one embodiment the boundary determining and/or the said tracking means comprise a radar transmitter and at least two receiver elements spaced apart by one or more wavelengths of the transmitted signal, and a processing means for processing reflected radar signals received by the said receivers to determine the distance and bearing of points on physical boundary or to track the position of an object moving along a line corresponding to or offset from a virtual boundary with respect to the said receivers. The invention also contemplates the use of a GPS receiver for determining the boundary.
