Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an interactive amusement system. It relates particularly, but not exclusively, to an interactive amusement system for reducing stress.
  • An aim of the present invention is to provide an interactive amusement system. Another aim of the invention is to provide an interactive amusement system for reducing or relief of stress.
  • an interactive amusement system as specified in the claims. It preferably comprises: 1) a display means for displaying a computer generated image; 2) an interaction means which, in use, enables a user to interact with the computer generated image, the interaction means including a) a plurality of sensors for sensing external stimuli, and b) a transmitting means for transmitting signals from the sensors to a receiving means; and 3) processing means for processing the received signals and converting them to a form suitable for modifying the computer generated image.
  • the interaction means is manipulable i.e., it can be bent, twisted, etc.
  • the interaction means has a head, a body, and limbs, and is in the form of a doll.
  • at least a portion of the interaction means is not rigid and yields to pressure.
  • the interaction means may be for example composed of a polymeric material with little or no material memory and very high ductility. This allows it to be subjected to almost any physical abuse that the user asserts thereon.
  • the plurality of sensors preferably includes at least one of the following types of sensors: a movement sensor (e.g. a piezoelectric sensor) for sensing physical movement such as bending or twisting; a motion sensor (e.g., a mercury switch); an orientation sensor (e.g. a tilt switch) for sensing the three- dimensional attitude of the interaction means; a pressure sensor (e.g., a contact switch); a light sensor; and/or a heat sensor.

  • the computer generated image will then be updated to show similar actions being inflicted on the displayed character.
  • the movement sensors used in this example are piezoelectric sensors. A section of piezoelectric material is placed in each of the limbs of the doll, and along its back extending into the head. As the parts of the doll are flexed, a current is generated in the piezoelectric material and is ultimately read by the micro-controller.
  • the information received from the base unit (14) is passed to either a software package, or to dedicated hardware within the computer for further processing, if required.
  • attitude sensors (24) are incorporated into the doll (12)
  • information about the orientation of the doll is relayed to the micro-controller (18) and thence to the computer (16) and to the computer generated image.
  • This allows the character shown in the computer generated image to rotate around in virtual 3D space corresponding to the actual movement of the doll (12) in real three-dimensional space. This increases the feeling of manipulation of the doll for the user.
  • the doll may also be "stabbed” using pins (26).
  • the stabbing action is sensed by simple pressure sensors (22) such as contact switches which, when manipulated by the interaction member, send signals to the micro-processor (18).
  • These switches are placed at particular "stab points” which can be easily identified by the user. This is shown in Figure 3.
  • stab points in the lower torso allow the computer generated character to be stabbed in the stomach, whereas stab points in the head in the position of the ears could allow the character to be shot in the head.
  • the appearance of the computer generated character may be altered via "skins” that can be downloaded via the internet, or using digital images from other sources.
  • the "skins” allows the user to customise their doll's character by changing its appearance, actions, sounds, movements and all other forms of character representation. For example, when a pin (26) is stuck into the doll (12), the character displayed on screen could be shot in a part of the body corresponding to the position of a pin.
  • the computer generated image may also be changed by using software that allows various weapons and scenarios (such as medieval, modern, fantasy, science fiction etc) to be used. The entire game playing session (or parts thereof) can then be recorded digitally and can be played back later, or edited.
  • a sensor could also be placed in the mouth to allow the character to be gagged, thereby reducing or eliminating sound from the displayed character and also changing the visual.
