Definitions
- the present invention refers to an electronics device comprising means for receiving a television signal and means for supplying said signal to a television set.
- the invention further comprises means for receiving information from a user of the device, and means for communicating with a provider of Internet pages. The communication is logged, and serves as basis for an individually designed Internet page presented to the user on the TV.
- the invention solves problems with previously known devices, which are non-flexible and non-dynamic.
- the invention also refers to a method for using said device.
- DVB digital video broadcast
- systems where a user has access to an electronics device, for instance a receiver, that provides the user with means for receiving television programmes broadcasted in the form of digitised signals, as well as means for communicating with a computer or a computer system, for instance the Internet.
- the electronics device is a separate unit connected to a television set, TV, and is also connected to the computer system via a communication means, for instance the fixed local telephone net.
- the electronics device may be a so-called Set Top Box, STB.
- the provider of the television broadcast provides the user with access to several services via the computer system. These services are presented for the user on the TV via the electronics device.
- the computer system includes an Internet portal, i. e. a special Internet page that hosts links to the services mentioned.
- the portal is based on Internet technology, and an internal HTML-browser is used for accessing the portal services.
- the services may be services provided by the provider, or by external providers that wish to be seen by the user, for instance advertisers, news agencies and/or providers for Internet shopping.
- the portal is maintained by the provider, and has the same design for all the users in the TV-brodcasting network, i. e. when a user starts the TV the information presented on the portal looks the same for all users.
- the services are presented to the user on the TV by a number of links, and the user may choose what service to use by guiding the electronics device to the correct link.
- the electronics device then communicates the choice to the Internet portal, which links the user to the provider of the chosen link, whereby the user gets access to all the information provided by the chosen provider.
- This information may be Internet pages comprising sports, shopping, news etc.
- the provider of the chosen link may provide more links, for instance to other providers, i. e the user may get access to the Internet via the TV and the electronics device.
- the system is based on the users being active in choosing the links to the wanted provider. Since the portal provides the same features for all the users, every user has to browse the portal every time to get a better view of the information accessible to the user in the user's field of interest. This is of course tiresome for the user, always making a number of choices and performing unnecessary work to get to a favourite Internet page.
- the system is non-flexible and non-dynamic for the user, which is a disadvantage for the user.
- the system should be sensitive to the choices that the user makes, and in some way remembers the choices that the user makes.
- the portal could present different information for different users, based on the choices made by the user. This should mean that the user would be presented an individually based portal, which would make it easier for the user to get a better view of her field of interest, which would also result in less work to get to the favourite Internet page. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a solution that meets these requirements.
- a main object of the present invention is to remedy the above mentioned problems, providing a flexible and dynamic electronics device comprising means for receiving a television signal and means for supplying said signal to a television set.
- the device further comprises means for receiving information from a user of the device, and means for communicating with a first provider of Internet pages.
- the device additionally comprises means for initiating an Internet page, portal, that includes an internal HTML-browser provided by said first provider, where the content of said portal is based on parameters chosen by the user of the device.
- the device also comprises means for supplying the parameters to said first provider.
- the portal may be divided into portal categories such as news, children, sports, adult movies etc., and the user is categorised, via the portal, dependent on the user parameters, for example what program the user watches and/or the time of day.
- the advantages that are obtained with the device are that the portal presents an individually based portal to the user, which makes it easier for the user to get a better view of her field of interest, which will also result in less work and less time to get to the favourite Internet page.
- the present invention also refers to a method for using said device.
- the device and method according to the invention may be designed in different ways, but a description of one embodiment will be presented below whilst referring to the attached figures.
- Fig. 1 schematically shows a system including devices according to a first embodiment of the invention
- FIG. 1 schematically shows a system including devices according to a first embodiment of the invention.
- An electronics device 3 comprises means for receiving a television signal and means for supplying said signal to a television set, TV 2.
- a user 1 is presented service information on the TV 2, via the electronics device 3, for instance a receiver, connected to the TV 2 via a first communication means 4.
- the electronics device 3 is connected to a first computer 5 via second communication means 6, for instance a STB or a DTV-ISP (telephone modem).
- the first computer 5 is connected to a number of second computers 7.
- the first computer 5 comprises means for hosting a portal 8, which is an Internet technology based homepage including an internal HTML-browser, i.e. portal is another word for Internet page.
- the first computer 5 with the portal 8 is provided by a first provider 9, and the second computers 7 are each provided by second providers 10.
- the first provider 9 collects links from the second providers 10 to the portal 8 in the first computer 5, which links are presented to the user 1 on the TV.
- the invention is based on the electronics device 3 comprising means for logging the activities, parameters, of the user 1 in the electronics device 3, and the first computer 5 comprising means for structuring the portal 8 into portal categories such as news, children, sports, adult movies etc., and that the user is categorised, via the portal, dependent on the user parameters, for example what program the user watches and/or the time of day, i.e. the portal presents an individually based portal to the user , based on the logged user activities.
- the parameters are in the form of; IP-addresses, which is the key for determining the user; the complete navigation behaviour of the user, e.g. what choices the user makes; user inputs, e. g.
- the parameters supplied to the provider may also comprise the subject of a program viewed on the TV 2 at a certain point in time by the user, and may also comprise the time of the day, for example the news at a certain time of the day.
- the logged activities based on the latest log events, and/or the current status, are sent to the first computer 5, which uses the logged information, and/or the current status, to make the portal 8 individually designed, i. e. the collection of links that are presented to the user on the TV 2 is individually collected and presented in the proper portal category based on the logged activities.
- the portal may also be launched automatically by the electronics device 3 due to an algorithm included , for instance, in the electronics device 3.
- the invention thereby makes it easier for the user to get a better view of her field of interest and also less work to get to a favourite Internet page.
- An advantage using portal categories is that the user is guided directly to a portal in her field of interest, based on the parameters mentioned, thereby allowing the user a quick access to Internet surfing possibilities via links in the field of interest.
- the electronics device 3 may comprise means for receiving a television signal in the form of a Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) signal.
- the electronics device may also be in the form of a so-called Set Top Box (STB).
- STB Set Top Box
- the simplest form of logged parameters is in the form of a status snap shot of the selections made by the user at the time.
- the means for receiving information from the user of the electronics device 3 may comprise means for receiving said information from a separate apparatus utilized by the user, such as a remote control.
- the first computer 5 comprises means for logging the activities of the user 1.
- a program included in the electronics device 3 launches the portal, whereby said first computer 5 checks which user that has logged on to the portal, via the user's IP-address.
- the portal may also be launched manually by the user via the electronics device 3,
- the first provider may have given the IP-address, temporary or non-temporary, to the user, for instance via the first computer and the second communication means or by assigning the electronics device a pre-determined IP-address during the manufacturing process.
- the first computer checks the logged parameters and uses the parameters for structuring the portal 8 into an individually based portal.
- the logged parameters may be of the same kind as the previously mentioned logged activities.
- the electronics device and/or the first computer may also log other events for creating an individually based portal. For instance, which contents the Internet pages include that the user chooses, user behaviour, date and time, the frequency of the usage of a specific service, geographical and other search criteria. This logged information may additionally be used by one of the second providers when advertising via the TV.
- the electronics device may be substituted for a number of different electronics devices, which together fulfils the required tasks.
- the logged parameters may be used both separately and in various combinations in order to achieve a portal that reflects the field of interest of the user, for example the time of day may be correlated to certain portal categories. An example of this may be if the user switches on the TV late at night and a children's net channel is on, then the portal does not present a child program based portal to the user, due to the late our, but may instead present a portal normally used at the hour, or another suitable portal. Also, there may be additional parameters logged apart from those parameters mentioned above, dependent on desired features of the system.
- the above mentioned embodiments have described the use of IP-addresses, but of course there are other ways to determine the ID of a user, which may be applicable in the present invention, for example a code, a flag, a sequence or another suitable commercial or non commercial method.
