Abstract

An adjustable supplementary spring assembly (10) is provided for supplementing the compressive resistance of a leaf spring (12) of a vehicle. The spring assembly (10) includes a supplementary leaf spring blade (18) having a fixed end, which is mounted to the leaf spring (12), and a free end. The assembly (10) further includes mounting means (40), which includes a U-bolt for accommodating a first free end (14) of the uppermost blade of the leaf spring (12). A clamping bracket is securely mounted to the U-bolt by means of nuts, with a sprung portion of the spring blade (18) ensuring that the free end of the spring blade (18) is resiliently biased against the clamping plate. By adjusting the nuts the distance between the clamping bracket, and thus the free end of the leaf spring blade (18), and the adjacent leaf spring (12) can be varied. This effectively allows the compressive resistance of the supplemented leaf spring to be readily adjusted according to the vehicle's load.
