Definitions
- the invention relates to child resistant lighters of the roll and press type in which the lighter is designed to be difficult to use by children and yet also easy to use by adults. Since 1992, the United States Child Protection Safety Committee (CPSC) regulations specify the qualifications required for a child resistant lighter by defining tests for use by children under the age of 5 years.
- CPSC United States Child Protection Safety Committee
- Existing gas-filled childproof lighters are combined with means for neutralising the lighting mechanism, which means are movable between an active neutralisation position, in which they prevent the actuation of the lighting mechanism, and a non-obstructing position in which they allow this actuation, these movable means being able to be displaced, manually by the user, from their active neutralisation position to their non-obstructing position.
- Lighters of the aforementioned type are disclosed in WO-A-90/00239 and EP-A- 0357347 in which the means for opening the valve consist of a tilting lever articulated to a fixed pin orthogonal to the axis of the burner valve, one end of which lever, in the shape of a fork or ring, is engaged under a collar of the burner valve and the other end or actuation end of which is intended to be actuated by the user by being pushed in the direction of the body of the lighter, counter lo the force of a return spring, the means for producing sparks themselves being mdependent or combined with the lever for opening the valve, and in which the means for neutralising the lighting mechanism are normally kept in the neutralisation position and are, moreover, arranged so as to be returned automatically into the neutralisation position after actuation of the lighting mechanism.
- a lighter of the aforementioned type is disclosed in WO-A-90/12254, in which the means for neutralising the lighting mechanism consist of a blocking element arranged under the actuation end of the tilting lever, movable parallel to the longitudinal axis of this tilting lever, between an active position in which it projects beyond the actuating end of the lever and a non-obstructing position in which it is pushed back in the direction of the other end of the tilting lever, this blocking element being provided with means for guiding with respect to the body of the lighter.
- a significant disadvantage with this known prior art is that the user is discouraged from using the lighter because of the difficulty in operation of the lighter.
- the user has difficulty finding the button and does not understand that a button has to be pressed before the usual operation of the lighter or in which direction it must be pressed. Also it has been know for users to break off the safety buttons and alter the lighter so that it operates a conventional non safety lighter.
- the child safety system is provided in the sparkwheel area in order to minimise the learning period from the user.
- these systems do not use mechanical means as described above, but rather properties or parts making the operation difficult for children while still easy to operate by adults. They mainly require the same action for operating a standard roll and press lighter.
- Such examples can be found in WO-A- 98/04869, EP-A-804707.
- WO-A-98/04869 provides a separate thumb wheel and spark wheel so that the spark wheel is no longer integral with the thumb wheel so it does not automatically turn when the thumb wheel is operated. Instead the user is required to apply a certain force in a certain direction in order to operate the lighter and this requires a certain degree of learning by the user which an adult is capable of achieving with the assistance of instructions. This avoids the problem of user's difficulties in operating the lighter whilst still being sufficiently difficult for a child to operate.
- EP-A-804707 provides a thumbwheel having a smooth outer surface, which similarly enables the user to operate the lighter in a particular learned way but without the need to operate a second button.
- the first family of systems provide additional safety to the consumer, by acting on the lever and therefore preventing escape of the gas in the locked position, the user has difficulty operating this kind of lighter.
- the second family of systems provide an easy and intrinsic operation of the lighter, but the gas can always escape by inadvertent operation of the lever by itself. This leaves the risk of ignition of the gas of the lighter from other fire source in its vicinity.
- WO 97/46832 discloses a lighter in which blocking means for the lever prevent operation of the lever and so prevent escape of gas.
- the blocking means are moved out of the blocking position by the user pressing laterally on the thumb wheel before rotating the thumbwheel.
- the disadvantage with this lighter is that the user has to learn that the thumb wheel has to be pressed laterally and thus has difficulty in operating the lighter.
- the current patent is designed to remove the aforesaid drawbacks and add other beneficial and safety features.
- the object of the invention is to provide a convenient way of operating the lighter without need to learn how to do it.
- Another object of this invention is to ensure that there is no escape of gas in locked position.
- Another object of the invention is to reduce the possibility of inadvertent ignition other than the correct specified method.
- Another object of the invention is to give the possibility by the user to unlock by two methods.
- a gas-filled child-proof lighter of the roll and press type in which the means for opening the burner valve consist of a control lever articulated to a fixed pin orthogonal to the axis of the burner valve (2), one end (3a) of the tilting lever, in the form of a fork or ring, is engaged under a collar (2a) of the burner valve and the other end, or actuation end of which is intended to be actuated by the user by being pushed in the direction of the body of the lighter, counter to the force of a return spring (1 1 ), a spark assembly being independent or combined with the lever for opening the valve (2), and in which there are combined with the control lever means for blocking the control lever, which means consist of a member movable between an active blocking position, in which it prevents the actuation of the control lever for opening the valve, having a part located under the rear actuation end of the lever, and a non blocking position in which it allows this actuation; the blocking member being moveable from the blocking position to the un
- the blocking member is so as to be returned automatically into the blocking position after actuation of the lighting mechanism.
- Means are preferably provided for ensuring that the blocking element is momentarily kept in the non-blocking position before actuation of the control lever .
- the spark wheel assembly preferably includes a thumbwheel which acts on the blocking means when the thumbwheels are rotated.
- an actuation member is provided between the spark wheel assembly and the blocking member.
- the actuation member is provided with indentations which correspond to and engage with the teeth of the thumbwheel.

- Figure 8 is a view similar to both figures 6 and 7 showing the control lever at the end of the actuation travel, that is to say in the position for opening the valve;
- the lighter according to the invention is of the type in which the means for openmg the burner valve 2 consist of a tilting lever 3 articulated to a fixed pin 4 orthogonal to the axis 2' of the burner valve 2, by means of two journals 5 which it carries laterally, in its median part, and which are engaged in hubs 6 made in ears 7 which are securely fastened to or integral with the body 8 of the lighter.
- a helical spring 1 1 compressed between a transverse wall 8a of the body 8 of the lighter and the lower face of the actuation end 3b of the tilting lever 3, tends constantly to move this end of the body 8 away and, consequently, to return the burner valve 2 into the valve-closed position.
- the spark production means can comprise a knurled spark wheel acting against a pyrophoric stone flint, and the knurled spark wheel and its thumbwheel drivers 25 can be mounted on a pin 12 parallel to the pin 4 of the tilting lever 3 and carried above it, by the ears 7, such that after actuation of the knurled wheel, the user's thumb falls onto the actuation end 3b of the lever 3, bringing about, immediately after the production of sparks, the opening of the burner valve 2 and the lighting of the flame.
- the thumbwheel drivers are preferably fixed to the spark wheel, however they may be freely arranged and to drive the spark wheels upon a pre-determined force or action by the user.
- the means for blocking the lighting mechanism are arranged so as to oppose the actuation of the tiltmg lever 3 in the direction of the arrow 9.
- This blocking means consists of a blockmg element 13 mounted so as to slide, in the direction of the arrows 14 and 15 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the lever 3.
- the blocking element 13 is connected to an actuating element 24 so that the sideways movement of the actuating element causes the blocking element to move correspondingly sideways in the direction of the arrows 14 and 15.
- the actuating element 24 is driven in the direction of arrow 14 by one or both of the thumbwheels 25 when operated normally by the user.
- FIGS 2, 2a and 2b show the actuating element 24 in more detail.
- the actuating element 24 is a substantially U-shape with two arms 26a joined by a beam 26b.
- the free ends of the two arms 26a form widened portions 26c which have indentations 26d on their upper surfaces which correspond approximately to the teeth 25a of the thumbwheel 25.
- the beam 26b is located in a corresponding slot 13c in the blocking member 13.
- the teeth 25a of the thumbwheel 25 and the indentations 26d of the actuating member 24 have a corresponding pitch so that they interengage and the actuating member 24 is driven by the thumb wheel in the same way that a rack is driven by a pinion in a rack and pinion mechanism.
- the blocking element By means of the beam 26b located in the slot 13c of the blocking element 13, the blocking element is also move sideways in the direction of arrow 14 and it reaches the position show in fig. 4.
- the lower end of the spring 11 for returning the control lever 3 into the normal rest position is engaged on a vertical peg 16 securely fastened to a transverse partitioning wall 8a of the body 8 of the lighter whereas the upper end of the spring 1 1 is engaged on a vertical peg 17 carried by the lower face of the blocking element 13.
- the elasticity and flexibility of the spring 1 1 does not oppose the displacement of the blocking element 13 in the direction of the arrows 14 and 15 but in contrast, it ensures that it is applied against the lower face of the lever 3.
- the blocking element 13 In the normal rest position, as illustrated in figure 1 , the blocking element 13 is in the withdrawn position, in which a shoulder 13a, turned downwards, and made in its real- face, is bearing against the upper edge 8b of the rear part of the wall of the body 8. In this position, the blocking element 13 which is interposed, practically without clearance, between the aforementioned edge 8b of the wall of the body 8 and the lower face of the rear end 3b of the lever 3 opposes any displacement of this rear end 3b in the direction of the arrow 9, that is to say in the direction corresponding to opening the burner valve 2 and, consequently, to lighting the lighter.
- the lever 3 has, in the vicinity of its front end, a ridge 18 normally situated in front of the front end of the blocking element 13 in the safe blocked position shown in fig. 1, and on the other hand, the upper face of the blocking element has, in the vicinity of its front end, a notch 19 intended to be engaged over the aforementioned ridge 18 when the blocking element 13 is displaced into the advanced position, that is to say in the direction of the arrow 14.
- This advanced and non obstructing position of the blocking element 13 is shown in figure 4.
- the blocking element 13 is normally held in the advanced position by the spring 11 whose force, which acts against the lower face of the blocking element 13, tends to keep the notch 19 of the latter engaged over the ridge 18 of the bottom of the groove 3d of the lower face of the rear end 3b of the lever 3.
- the blocking element 13 is held in its advanced and non obstructing position as illustrated in figure 4 for as long as no force other than that exerted by the spring 1 1 acts on the rear end 3 b of the lever 3.
- the lever and blocking element do not have corresponding notch and ridge but plane surfaces which do not engage with each other.
- the blocking member is held in the position shown in fig. 4 by the maintenance of pressure provided by the user on the thumbwheel and the users digit will pass to the lever 3 and depress the lever in the direction of arrow 9 to such an extent that the shoulder 13a has passed the upper edge 8b of the body 8 of the lighter before the blocking member is urged back by spring 1 1.
- a ramp 21 orientated upward and rearward and, at the front end of the blocking element 13, a complementary ramp 22 such that after the disengagement of the ridge 1 and of the notch 19, the two ramps 21 and 22, which are pressed against one another by the spring 1 1, generate a force pushing the blocking element 13 back in the direction of the arrow 15, which returns it to the blocking position.
- the abutment face belonging to the body 8 of the lighter consists of a part 8b situated under the rear end 3b of the control lever 3, on the upper edge of the body 8 of the lighter.
- the corresponding bearing face of the blockmg element 13 intended to prevent the manoeuvring of the control lever 3 in the direction of the arrow 9 when the blocking element 13 is in the active blocking position consists of an undercut step 13a made in the rear face of the rigid rear skirl 13b of the blocking element 13.
- the lighter may be operated by application by the user of a normal force exerted on the rear end 13b of the blocking element 13 which will bring about displacement of the blocking element 13 in the direction of the arrow 14 and, consequently, annul the role of this blocking element 13 which will automatically be brought into the non obstructing and active position by simply normally operating the control lever 3.
- This action on the blocking element is then followed by the usual rolling of the thumb wheel by the user to operate the lighter.
- the user therefore has two choices to operate the lighter.
- the option of this second mode of operation may be removed by extending the wall of the body of the lighter 8 upwardly to protect the blocking element 13 from access by the user. Similarly this second mode of operation could be removed if required by removal of the ridge 18 and notch 19 on the lever 3 and blocking element 13 respectively.
- the front face of the blocking element 13 may be shaped in a manner such as to be able to match the curved profile of spring 1 1 for returning the control lever 3 when the blocking element 13 is displaced into the advanced and non obstructing position.
- the tilting of the control lever 3 into its position for opening the burner valve 2 brings about a deformation of the spring 11 which, for this reason, participates in the return of the blocking element 13 into the withdiawn active blocking position, as soon as the user releases the control lever 3.
- the deformation of the spring 11 which results therefrom creates an additional force for returning the blocking element 13 in the direction of the arrow 15.
- a further embodiment of the invention is shown in which the blocking element, the control lever and the actuating element are formed in a single unitary part.
- the same identifying numbers are used for corresponding parts of the lighter as in the previous embodiment shown in figures 1 to 5.
- the combined lever 33 acts as a conventional control lever and as the blocking element and is actuated or unblocked by the action of the spark wheel 25 directly.
- the rest position of the lighter is shown in fig.
- the combined lever 33 comprises an integral pin 34 formed by means of two journals 35 as in the previous embodiment. However in this embodiment the journals 35 are engaged in elongated slot-like hubs 36 formed in the ears 7 of the lighter body 8.
- the burner end of the combined lever 33 is in the form of an elongate openmg 33a which engages the collar 2a of the burner valve 2, rather than a circular ring-shaped end 3a of the earlier embodiment.
- the opening 33a could alternatively be in the form of an open ended slot.
- the spring 11 urges the operating end 33b of the combined lever 33 back upwardly and also in the direction of arrow 15 outwardly back to the original rest position in which the operating end 33b is once again blocked and prevented from being pressed by the shoulder 33c acting against the edge 8a of the body 8.
