Definitions
- This invention relates to television-based web browsers, and more particularly, to the entry of complex scripts into a television-based web browser using a handheld remote control device.
- Web browsers often require entry of typewritten language characters to perform various functions. For example, it is common to enter typewritten language characters to specify a Universal Resource Locator (URL) address. A user types the URL address "http://www.microsoft.com" into the address entry field to access one of Microsoft's Internet websites.
- URL Universal Resource Locator
- Television-based web browsers have become common, especially among home users who have historically had little or no access to a personal computer or the Internet.
- These systems typically allow a user to enter typewritten language characters into a web browser utilizing a keyboard that communicates with the web browser host either through a standard keyboard cable or via a wireless link.
- Providing keyboards directed to Latin character set based languages e.g.,
- English, German, French, etc. has proven to be of little problem.
- other languages pose problems for users attempting to enter characters, or scripts, into a television-based web browser.
- languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and the like consist of so many characters, that to make practical use of a typical keyboard requires use of an indirect method of entering scripts.
- the Chinese language consists of over 50,000 characters. This prohibits the familiar use of having one key of a standard keyboard assigned for each character.
- IME Input Method Editor
- a user of a Japanese web browser might enter the Latin characters "w-a-t-a-s-h-i" and then press a key to cause these characters to be phonetically converted to the appropriate Japanese character.
- some IMEs use patterns or the number of strokes in a character to identify a character.
- the present invention concerns a system and method for entering complex scripts into a television-based web browser by providing a touch sensitive pad on a handheld remote control device that allows the user to write language characters directly onto the touch sensitive pad for transmission to the web browser.
- the user writes a language character onto the touch sensitive pad of the handheld remote control device.
- the handheld remote control device has a character recognizer to recognize the strokes as a language character and convert the strokes to data representing the language character.
- the data is transmitted to a web browser host of a television unit, where it is rendered on the television screen.
- Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of a television remote control system having a handheld remote control device and a television unit having a web browser host.
- Fig. 2 is a block diagram of the handheld remote control device and television unit of Fig. 1.
- Fig. 3 is a flow diagram showing the method for entering complex scripts into a television-based web browser.
- the present invention concerns a system and method for entering complex scripts into a television-based web browser.
- the invention is implemented utilizing a touch sensitive pad on which a user may write language characters to enter into the web browser.
- the present invention is described in the context of a handheld remote control device which has an integrated touch sensitive pad for use with a television-based web browser.
- the described implementation refers to a web browser, which includes Internet browsers.
- the invention may be implemented with other browser types such as a file browser.
- the invention may also be implemented within a broadcast enabled computer that is capable of receiving and displaying television signals, or perhaps general purpose computers that require entry of complex scripts to operate.
- Fig. 1 shows a television remote control system 20 in which the present invention may be implemented.
- the system has an advanced handheld remote control device 22 and a television browser unit 24.
- the television browser unit 24 has a set top box 26 for housing a web browser host, and a television 28.
- the web browser host may be integrated into the television 28.
- the advanced handheld remote control device 22 has features common to standard television remote control devices, such as a power actuator 30, a channel toggle control 32 with a channel up pad 34 and a channel down pad 36, and a volume toggle control 38 with a volume up pad 40 and a volume down pad 42.
- the advanced handheld remote control device 22 is equipped with a touch sensitive pad 44, a display screen 46 which displays several user options, and a scrolling wheel 48 for scrolling between user options on the display screen 46.
- the advanced handheld remote control device 22 also has a stylus 50 for interfacing with the touch sensitive pad 44. It is noted that the touch sensitive pad 44 and display screen 46 may be integrated to form a touch sensitive display screen.
- Fig. 2 shows selected functional components of the television remote control system.
- the television remote control system 20 has two primary components, the advanced handheld remote control device 22 and the television browser unit 24.
- the advanced handheld remote control device 22 also has a processor 70, a data transmitter 72 and memory 74.
- a remote control operating system 76 is resident within the memory 74 and executable on the processor 70.
- a touch sensitive pad driver 78, a display screen driver 79 and a character recognizer 80 are executable functions resident within memory 74.
- the television unit 24 has a data receiver 82 and a web browser host 84.
- the web browser host 84 also has a processor 86 and memory 88.
- a web host operating system 90 and a television- based web browser 92 are resident within the memory 88 of the web browser host 84 and are executable on the processor 86.
- character recognizer 80' may reside at the web host operating system 90.
- Fig. 3 depicts a general process for entering complex scripts into the television-based web browser 92. The user writes strokes to define a language character onto the touch sensitive pad 44 using the stylus 50.
- the touch sensitive pad driver 78 scans the touch sensitive pad 44 periodically to detect user input and the touch sensitive pad driver 78 receives the strokes from the touch sensitive pad 44.
- the touch sensitive pad driver 78 passes the strokes from the touch sensitive pad 44 to the character recognizer 80.
- the character recognizer 80 when the character recognizer 80 has sufficient data, it recognizes the strokes written by the user as a language character and converts the strokes into the language character data (i.e., ASCII code) representing the language character.
- the language character data is then transmitted from the data transmitter 72 to the data receiver 82 via a wireless communication link (step 106 of Fig. 3).
- the data transmitter 72 and the data receiver 82 may also comprise data transceivers.
- data would flow from the advance handheld remote control device 22 to the television unit 24 and from the television unit 24 to the advanced handheld remote control device 22.
- the wireless communication may be implemented with IR (infrared) or RF
- step 108 of Fig. 3 when the data receiver 82 receives the transmission from the data transmitter 72, the accuracy of the language character data transmitted is verified. If the transmission failed, the language character data is re-transmitted. If the integrity of the language character data is intact, the data receiver 82 provides the data to the television-based web browser 92 of the web browser host 84. As shown in step 110, the television-based web browser 92 provides the language character data to be displayed on the television 28.
- step 114 of Fig. 3 If the user enters another language character, the process is repeated from step 102 of Fig. 3. If the user has concluded entering characters, the process is concluded (step 114 of Fig. 3).
- the described embodiment of the present invention utilizes a television 28 to display the web browser 92
- the web browser 92 can be displayed on any display unit as long as the display unit has a video display screen.
- the data transmitted from the data transmitter 72 of the handheld remote control device 22 to the data receiver 82 of the television unit 24 is the handwriting stroke data.
- This data is subsequently provided to the character recognizer 80' at the web browser host 74, which converts the strokes into language character data to be entered into the television-based web browser 92 for display on the television 28.
