Definitions
- This invention relates to safety apparatus for use in hospitals, nursing homes and similar environments.
- the apparatus disclosed herein acts to reduce slips, trips and falls by patients.
- slips, trips and falls by patients are a source of considerable concern in hospitals, healthcare homes and similar locations.
- a typically sized hospital may have a slip, trip or fall incident each week on average which, as well as the medical damage which may result to the patient, leads to administration costs and potential liability issues for the hospital.
- 34% of general office accidents are slip, trips and falls, this category of injury involving patients represents around 60% of accidents in hospitals , . Therefore, the present invention aims to provide a way of reducing slips, trips and falls.
- the apparatus in question is designed for use with patients who are relatively weak and lying in bed, but potentially able to move around. Infirm patients will often attempt to move when they are not supposed to, not being used to being so infirm. This is particularly an issue in hospitals such as private hospitals where patients are accommodated in single rooms. Nurse call systems are provided to enable patients to call for assistance with e.g. accessing the toilet or for any other form of assistance. Use of this system is encouraged in hospitals but, due to patient's attitudes and the maintenance of their dignity - particularly as patients do not like to be helped to the toilet - the system is underused, patients attempt to walk and injure themselves.
- the invention aims to detect infirm patients trying to walk when they are not sufficiently strong, particularly when they are in private rooms where nurses cannot see the patient.
- a care plan and risk assessment are prepared.
- a procedure for checking on the patient will be decided, for example after a serious operation they may be checked on every five minutes, and by law patients must be checked at least once an hour.
- the aim of the present invention is to provide a system for detecting when patients are moving under their own power, whilst they are infirm, which is discreet and does not produce false alarms.
- an alarm for detecting movement of a patient comprising an infra-red beam source, a means for detecting when the infra-red beam is interrupted and an indicator means, wherein the infra-red beam is positioned between where a patient is lying or sitting and a door.
- a second aspect provides an alarm for detecting movement of a patient lying in a bed, the alarm comprising an infra-red beam source, a means for detecting when the infra-red beam is interrupted and an indicator means, wherein the infra-red beam is positioned underneath the bed, towards the foot of the bed.
- the infra-red beam is preferably positioned around one inch above the floor.
- the alarm is adapted to log the time of events selected from a group comprising: the infra-red beam being interrupted, a staff member entering the room, the alarm being set off, the alarm being switched on and the alarm being switched off.
- the indicator means is provided as part of a nursing station.
- a room for accommodating a patient comprising a bed or chair for a patient and an alarm
- the alarm comprising an infra-red beam source and means for detecting when the infra-red beam is interrupted and means for indicating when the infra-red beam has been interrupted, wherein the infra-red beam is positioned between the patient and a door.
- a room for accommodating a patient comprising a bed for a patient and an alarm
- the alarm comprising an infra-red beam source and means for detecting when the infra-red beam is interrupted and means for indicating when the infra-red beam has been interrupted, wherein the infra-red beam is positioned underneath the bed, towards the foot of the bed.
- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a hospital room.
- a hospital room shown generally as (10) comprises a bed (1) with legs (2) at its base.
- An infra-red beam (3) is provided between sensors (4) and (5) .
- sensors (4) or (5) will be an infra-red source and infra-red detector, whilst the other will be a retro-reflective panel.
- the sensors will indicate when a patient has broken the infra-red beam (3) using known technology.
- the infra-red beam (3) is positioned approximately one inch from the floor and within a foot of the bottom legs of the bed (2) . This position is selected so that it is not triggered merely by a patient swinging their legs over the side of the bed, but is always triggered by the patient walking towards the lower part of the room (6) and door (7).
- the beam is low because the patients to be monitored using this system and who are likely to slip, trip or fall, are ill and walk with a shuffle.
- infra-red beam When the infra-red beam is broken, a nurse can be alerted and can proceed immediately to the room to help the patient. It is envisaged that several infra-red beams could be used, positioned in different places in the room. In other environments such as nursing homes, it could be used to detect when patients are moving from chairs or sofas and could be located near such places or in front of doors.
- the system could be integrated as a modular addition to known nurse call systems.
- the system could be activated by a button (8) marked "mobility" at the door by the nurse as they leave the room.
- a button (8) marked "mobility" at the door by the nurse as they leave the room.
- an audible buzzer and flashing light in the nursing station alerts the nurse that a low mobility patient requires • assistance.
- the nurse could then go to the patient to offer assistance.
- the beam is deactivated before the nurse enters the room and, if required, is reactivated upon exiting, after the patient is returned to bed.
- the sensor can also be activated and deactivated when visitors go to see the patient and when anyone else requires access to the room.
- the controls to activate and deactivate the beam may be positioned either or both at the nursing station or in the patient room.
- the system could be integrated with standard nurse call systems, for example when the system is triggered the time of the trigger could be recorded automatically and when the nurse responds and switches the system off or enters the roof to offer assistance, a further timed record can be made. This provides documentary evidence of the movement of the patient and of nursing staff in the event of any incident.
- a facility to record the time of incidents including, but by no means limited to, occasions when a patient makes a request for a nurse and occasions when a nurse enters a room, may be a useful addition to all nurse call systems.
- the sensor system can be used on whichever patients are deemed to be high risk in terms of mobility, and typically the patient would be unaware that the system is in use throughout their stay in the hospital.
- slips, trips and falls caused by the patient trying to access something they have been encouraged to obtain only by buzzing for help a substantial reduction in slips, trips and falls can be obtained. Only falls from the bed, which are relatively uncommon, would remain. All slips, trips and falls to, from and inside the toilet would be eliminated as patients would always be accompanied.
- this system ensures that patients are more carefully looked after than is practical with current methods, reducing the risk of injury to patients and the cost burden of such incidents to hospitals.
