Abstract

The invention concerns a brush particularly suitable for cleaning submerged surfaces in which the bristles project as an arcuate shape in the cross section of the brush and the base supports an upwardly and rearwardly extending deflector plate with at least one roller positioned in front of and within the operating depth of the bristles. The brush also has upwardly curved ends.

Description

POOL CLEANER BRUSH
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a brush which, while not restricted to this use, is particularly suited to the cleaning of the submerged walls and floor of swimming pools.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Pool brushes are well known and made to a wide variety of sizes and also in different shapes. However, the brushes all provide a relatively narrow grid of brush compared to the length. Brushes with upturned ends are also known.
However, all brushes presently known to the applicant require considerable effort to exert a cleaning force on the surface to be cleaned. Further the brushes are difficult to negotiate around the corners formed between the walls and floor of a swimming pool. Vertical walls are particularly difficult to apply brushing pressure against.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a brush which will at least partially alleviate some of the difficulties referred to. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a brush comprising a base supporting bristles characterized in that the base has an arcuate cross section with the bristles projecting radially therefrom.
Further features of this invention provides for the base to have an adaptor to receive the end of a handle, and a deflector plate projecting upwardly from the base and inclined towards the operatively rear edge of the base.
The invention also provides for the cross-section of the brush to be semi-circular, for the ends of the brush to be upwardly curved and for the base to support at least one roller positioned forwardly of the base and above the normal operating level of the bristles.
Yet a further feature of the invention provides for the brush to have a set of upwardly projecting bristles providing a sharp effective bristle edge and extending forwardly of the operatively front edge of the brush. Preferably this set of bristles will be removably mounted on the base.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of this invention will become apparent from the following description of different embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which
Fig. 1 is an oblique view of one embodiment including a deflector plate;
Fig. 2 an end elevation; Figs 3 & 4 are similar views of a simpler construction; and
Fig. 5 a different embodiment; and
Figs 6,7 & 8 indicate some of the shapes to which the bristles may be made to conform.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Figs 1 and 2 a pool brush (1) has a base (2) for supporting a set of stiff bristles (3) to project therefrom. The bristles (3) will be secured in any conventional manner.
The base (2) is made to a semi-circular cross-section and the ends (4) will preferably be curved upwardly. The base (2) is fitted into a supporting holder (5) which carries brackets (6) and (7) to support a deflector plate (8) and an adaptor (9) respectively. The adaptor (9) is made to receive a conventional kind of manipulating handle.
Bolts (10) and wing nuts (11 ) can be used to mount the holder (5) to the base (2).
Further right angled brackets (12) are secured to the holder to retain a pair of rollers (13) in front of the axis of the brush (1) and within the height of the bristles (3).
As can be seen in Fig 2 the rollers are within the thickness of the bristles (3) and the deflector plate is supported from the adaptor (9) by the link (14).
In use the brush (1) described has been found to be particularly effective and easy to use. During a forward brushing stroke the deflector plate (8) tends to push the brush against the surface being cleaned and a more or less constant depth of bristle pack is kept in contact with the surface being cleaned with variation in the angle of the manipulating handle to that surface.
When the direction of movement is reversed the pressure resulting from the deflector plate (8) is released and avoids disturbance of the dirt settled on the pool floor.
The rollers (13) enable the brush to move easily through corners between floor and walls of a swimming pool while maintaining a substantially constant cleaning pressure.
The construction lends itself to easy replacement of components which may become worn with use.
Referring to Figs 3 and 4 the brush (20) is substantially similar to that described above save that the construction is more suitable to a mass production plastics moulding manufacture.
In this embodiment the brush (20) follows approximately a quadrant of a circle in cross-section and the adaptor (21) and roller brackets (22) can be made integral with the base (23). The deflector plate (24) can also be a moulded structure and can be either permanently or removably mounted to the base (23).
In use the brush (20) will function similarly to the brush illustrated in Figs 1 and 2.
Fig 5 shows a different embodiment with the base (30) being similar to that of Fig 1 but with the bristles (31) located over a cross-sectioned arc of less than a semicircle. In place of the deflector plate or interchangeable therewith is provided a bracket (32) which extends forwardly and upwardly from the operatively front of the base (30). An additional set of bristles (33) are supported by the bracket (32) and arranged to provide a comparatively hard brushing edge (34) to enable cleaning of hard to get at places in a pool.
In figs 6, 7 and 8 a front elevation of different bristle configurations is shown. Fig 6 shows the bristles (40) following a straight line along the brush while figs 7 and 8 show the bristle line (41 ) curved at the ends in fig 7 and of a constant gradual curvature in fig 8.
It will be appreciated that the invention is not limited particularly to the embodiments described above and may vary widely in detail. The location of the rollers and chosen location of the deflector plate can be varied for example. In particular the density and rigidity of the bristles in any of the embodiments described will be chosen to be the best suited to the prevalent conditions of use to which a particular brush is to be put.
