Abstract

A process for the laundering of textile fabrics, which comprises: (i) a wash step in which the fabrics are immersed in an aqueous wash liquor comprising a detergent surfactant, a detergency builder and optionally other detergent ingredients, (ii) a rinse step in which the fabrics are immersed for at least 30 seconds in an aqueous rinse liquor free of surfactant and comprising a detergency builder in a concentration within the range of from 0.1 to 10 g/l. A composition suitable for carrying out this process comprises: (a) from 10 to 99.95 wt.% of a detergency builder, (b) from 0 to 90 wt.% of a pH buffer, the ratio of (a) to (b) being from 99.95:0 to 10:90; and (c) a fluorescer and/or a perfume; the composition being substantially free of organic surfactant.

Description

PROCESS AND COMPOSITION FOR LAUNDERING OF TEXTILE FABRICS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a process and composition for the laundering of textile fabrics.
Background of the Invention
In countries where textile fabrics are habitually washed by hand, even using premium laundry cleaning products, the degree of cleaning achieved is frequently disappointing.
One obvious route to improving handwash performance, is to try to improve the ingredients in the main wash detergent formulation. However, the inventors have now realised that this technical problem can be addressed by a novel and surprising process, whereby the fabrics are subjected to a detergency builder in the rinse. As well as improving overall cleaning/soil removal, in some cases this can also assist stain removal.
Definition of the Invention
The present invention provides a process for the laundering of textile fabrics, which comprises:
(i) a wash step in which the fabrics are immersed in an aqueous wash liquor comprising a detergent surfactant, a detergency builder and optionally other detergent ingredients; and (ii) a rinse step in which the fabrics are immersed for at least 30 seconds in an aqueous rinse liquor substantially free of surfactant and comprising a detergency builder in a concentration within the range of from 0.1 to 10 g/l.
A second aspect of the present invention provides a composition for treating laundered textile fabrics in the rinse, which comprises:
(a) from 10 to 99.95 wt%, preferably from 15 to 99.0 wt%, more preferably from 20 to 95 wt% of a water-soluble detergency builder;
(b) from 0 to 90 wt%, preferably from 0 to 85 wt%, more preferably from 0 to 80 wt%, still more preferably from 0 to 50 wt% of a pH buffer, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being from 99.9:0 to 10:90, preferably from 99:0 to 15:85, more preferably from 95:0 to 20:80; and
(c) a fluorescer and/or a perfume, the composition being substantially free of organic surfactant.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The process of the present invention is basically characterised by inclusion in the rinse liquor of a detergency builder in a concentration range of from 0.1-10g/l. This rinse liquor must be substantially free of surfactants. For example, the rinse liquor should contain <0.25g/l, more preferably <0.1g/l and most preferably <0.05g/l of non-soap synthetic surfactant. It is especially preferred for it to be completely devoid of such surfactant. The rinse liquor may be substantially free of soap also.
The Detergency Builder in the Rinse
Preferably, the concentration of the detergency builder is from 0.5-5 g/l.
A wide range of water-soluble builders is available for use in the process of the present invention. They may be water-soluble, water insoluble or partially soluble. One or more such builders can be used. However, most preferred is sodium tripolyphosphate. Other possible water-soluble detergency builders for this process are the alkali metal citrates, alkali metal carbonates (with calcite) as well as sodium nitrilot acetate (NTA). Aluminosiiicates are typical insoluble builders.
The builder is preferably in an amount to yield a pCa > 4, preferably > 5.
The Buffer
The optional pH buffer (b) is present at from 0 to 90 wt%, preferably from 0 to 85 wt%, more preferably from 0 to 80 wt%, especially from 0 to 50 wt% based on the weight of the composition according to the second aspect of the invention. When the pH buffer is present, preferably the level is at least 2 wt%.
It is greatly preferred that the rinse liquor to have a pH > 8.0. To this end, if the builder itself is not sufficiently alkaline it is possible to add a specific alkaline buffering agent and/or use a buffering agent which is a non-builder or semi-detergency builder, for example, an alkali metal carbonate (without calcite) and/or bicarbonate and/or silicate. Thus, a preferred embodiment comprises use of sodium tripolyphosphate as the builder, buffered to a pH greater than 8.0 in the rinse liquor with an agent selected from the alkaline metal carbonates (without calcites), orthophosphates, bicarbonates and/or silicates. If, however, the detergency builder comprises, or is mainly, or solely consists of a citrate and/or NTA and/or aluminosiiicates, it is only necessary to buffer to a pH of > 5.5.
Other Optional Ingredients
It is also preferred to include one or other optional ingredient for example selected from fluorescers, perfumes, starches, enzymes, (e.g. lipases), soil-release polymers, photobleaches and blueing agents. In the case of compositions according to the invention, fluorescer and/or perfume is mandatory. For products to be dosed in a final rinse, it is highly preferred to include anti-foam. Additionally or alternatively to the foregoing, it is also possible to include a clay, for example of type bentonite, for example also having a number average particle size not exceeding 2.0 μm. This can also assist in stain removal.
Product Form
The rinse liquor may be dosed with a composition according to the present invention in any suitable form, for example as a liquid, paste, gel, bar, tablet or granular product.
The present invention will now be illustrated in more detail by way of the following non- limiting examples.

All main-washes and rinses were carried out in 24°FH (2:1 Ca:Mg) water.
EXPERIMENTAL METHODOLOGY
The artificial soil dispersion used in this wash-resoil procedure was produced according to the following procedure.
Artificial Sebum Composition.
An artificial sebum composition comprising:-

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. A process for the laundering of textile fabrics, which comprises:
(i) a wash step in which the fabrics are immersed in an aqueous wash liquor comprising a detergent surfactant, a detergency builder and optionally other detergent ingredients; and
(ii) a rinse step in which the fabrics are immersed for at least 30 seconds in an aqueous rinse liquor substantially free of surfactant and comprising a detergency builder in a concentration within the range of from 0.1 to 10 g/l.
2. A process as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the concentration of the detergency builder in the rinse liquor is within the range of from 0.25 to 5 g/l.
3. A process according to either preceding claim wherein the detergency builder in step (ii) comprises a water-soluble builder.
4. A process as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the detergency builder is selected from alkali metal sodium tripolyphosphates, alkali metal citrates, orthophosphates, alkali metal carbonates, aluminosiiicates, and alkali metal nitrilotriacetates, and mixtures thereof.
5. A process as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the rinse liquor further comprises a pH buffer.
6. A process as claimed in any of claims 3-5, wherein the water-soluble builder selected from tripolyphosphates, imino disuccinates and mixtures thereof, and the rinse liquor is buffered to a pH greater than 8.0 with a buffer selected from one or more of alkali metal carbonates (without calcite), bicarbonates and silicates.

A process according to claim 3 or claim 4, wherein the water-soluble detergency builder comprises a citrate or nitri I otri acetate and the rinse liquor is buffered to a pH > 5.5 with a buffer selected from one or more of alkali metal carbonates(without calcite), orthophosphates, bicarbonates and silicates.
8. A process as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the rinse liquor also comprises a benefit agent selected from fluorescers, perfumes, starch, lipase, soil release polymers, photobleaches and blueing agents.
9. A process as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the rinse liquor also comprises a clay.
10. A composition for treating laundered textile fabrics in the rinse, which comprises:
(a) from 10 to 99.95 wt%, preferably from 15 to 99.0 wt%, more preferably from 20 to 95 wt% of a water-soluble detergency builder;
(b) from 0 to 90 wt%, preferably from 0 to 85 wt%, more preferably from 0 to 80 wt%, still more preferably from 0 to 50 wt% of a pH buffer, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being from 99.9:0 to 10:90, preferably from 99:0 to 15:85, more preferably from 95:0 to 20:80; and
(c) a fluorescer and/or a perfume, the composition being substantially free of organic surfactant. the composition being substantially free of organic surfactant.
11. A composition as claimed in claim 10, which further comprises an effective amount of a benefit agent selected from starch, lipase, soil release polymers, photobleaches and blueing agents.
12. A composition as claimed in claim 10 or claim 11 , which is in the form of a powder composition, granulated, a liquid, a paste, a gel, a bar or a tablet.
13. A laundry detergent product which comprises:
(i) a first composition which comprises a detergent surfactant, a detergency builder and optionally other detergent ingredients,
(ii) a second composition which is as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 12.
14. A product as claimed in claim 13, wherein the first composition (i) is a particulate laundry detergent composition.
15. A product as claimed in claim 13 or claim 14, wherein the first and second compositions are within separate primary packaging, and packed together within common secondary packaging.
