- the present invention relates to a process and composition for the laundering of textile fabrics.
- the present invention provides a process for the laundering of textile fabrics, which comprises:
- a wash step in which the fabrics are immersed in an aqueous wash liquor comprising a detergent surfactant, a detergency builder and optionally other detergent ingredients; and (ii) a rinse step in which the fabrics are immersed for at least 30 seconds in an aqueous rinse liquor substantially free of surfactant and comprising a detergency builder in a concentration within the range of from 0.1 to 10 g/l.
- a second aspect of the present invention provides a composition for treating laundered textile fabrics in the rinse, which comprises:
- (b) from 0 to 90 wt%, preferably from 0 to 85 wt%, more preferably from 0 to 80 wt%, still more preferably from 0 to 50 wt% of a pH buffer, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being from 99.9:0 to 10:90, preferably from 99:0 to 15:85, more preferably from 95:0 to 20:80; and
- the process of the present invention is basically characterised by inclusion in the rinse liquor of a detergency builder in a concentration range of from 0.1-10g/l.
- This rinse liquor must be substantially free of surfactants.
- the rinse liquor should contain ⁇ 0.25g/l, more preferably ⁇ 0.1g/l and most preferably ⁇ 0.05g/l of non-soap synthetic surfactant. It is especially preferred for it to be completely devoid of such surfactant.
- the rinse liquor may be substantially free of soap also.
- the concentration of the detergency builder is from 0.5-5 g/l.
- a wide range of water-soluble builders is available for use in the process of the present invention. They may be water-soluble, water insoluble or partially soluble. One or more such builders can be used. However, most preferred is sodium tripolyphosphate.
- Other possible water-soluble detergency builders for this process are the alkali metal citrates, alkali metal carbonates (with calcite) as well as sodium nitrilot acetate (NTA). Aluminosiiicates are typical insoluble builders.
- the builder is preferably in an amount to yield a pCa > 4, preferably > 5.
- the optional pH buffer (b) is present at from 0 to 90 wt%, preferably from 0 to 85 wt%, more preferably from 0 to 80 wt%, especially from 0 to 50 wt% based on the weight of the composition according to the second aspect of the invention.
- the pH buffer is present, preferably the level is at least 2 wt%.
- the rinse liquor it is greatly preferred that the rinse liquor to have a pH > 8.0.
- a specific alkaline buffering agent which is a non-builder or semi-detergency builder, for example, an alkali metal carbonate (without calcite) and/or bicarbonate and/or silicate.
- a preferred embodiment comprises use of sodium tripolyphosphate as the builder, buffered to a pH greater than 8.0 in the rinse liquor with an agent selected from the alkaline metal carbonates (without calcites), orthophosphates, bicarbonates and/or silicates.
- the detergency builder comprises, or is mainly, or solely consists of a citrate and/or NTA and/or aluminosiiicates, it is only necessary to buffer to a pH of > 5.5.
- fluorescers for example selected from fluorescers, perfumes, starches, enzymes, (e.g. lipases), soil-release polymers, photobleaches and blueing agents.
- fluorescer and/or perfume is mandatory.
- anti-foam for products to be dosed in a final rinse, it is highly preferred to include anti-foam.
- a clay for example of type bentonite, for example also having a number average particle size not exceeding 2.0 ⁇ m. This can also assist in stain removal.
- the rinse liquor may be dosed with a composition according to the present invention in any suitable form, for example as a liquid, paste, gel, bar, tablet or granular product.
