Abstract

A method of simulating the performance of a lubricating oil in an internal combustion engine over a low mileage cycle. The method comprises the steps of: (i) performing at least 100 ECE city cycles, and optionally at least one EUDC, on an engine including engine oil at a temperature indicative of winter driving in Western Europe, and subjecting the engine and engine oil to accelerated cooling between the cycles back to the temperature indicative of winter driving in Western Europe; and/or (ii) performing at least 100 ECE city cycles, and optionally at least one EUDC, on the engine including the engine oil at a temperature indicative of summer driving in Western Europe, and subjecting the engine and engine oil to accelerated cooling between the cycles back to the temperature indicative of summer driving in Western Europe.
