Definitions
- the invention concerns a method as defined in the preamble of claim 1 for control- ling the surface properties and/or curl and/or tension and/or tension profile of paper in a dryer section.
- the invention also concerns a method as claimed in the preamble of claim 2 for controlling the curl.
- the invention also concerns an arrangement in a paper machine as defined in the preamble of claim 17 for controlling the surface properties and/or curl and/or tension and/or tension profile of paper in a dryer section.
- the invention also concerns an arrangement in a paper machine as claimed in the preamble of claim 18 for controlling the curl of paper.
- twin- wire draw and/or single- wire draw is/are employed.
- the groups of drying cylinders include two wires, which press the web, one from above and the other one from below, against heated cylinder faces. Between the rows of drying cylinders, which are usually horizonal rows, the web has free and unsupported draws, which are susceptible of fluttering, which may cause web breaks, in particular as the web is still relatively moist and, therefore, of low strength.
- the tendency of curling of paper is already influenced in connection with the web formation, in particular in the sheet formation stage, for example, by means of selecting the difference in speed between the slice jet and the wire, and by means of other running parameters.
- a suitable initial curl is regulated for the sheet in order that the curl of the paper after one-sided and two-sided copying could be optimized.
- the reactivity of curl i.e. the extent to which curling occurs per unit of change in moisture content, is affected to a greater extent by means of a multi-layer structure of the paper, which arises in connection with the web formation in the wet end.
- FI Patent Application 963734 (equivalent to provisional US Patent Application 60/030,693), a method for drying a surface-treated paper web or equivalent in an after-dryer of a paper machine and a dryer section of a paper machine that makes use of the method are described, wherein, in view of compensation of the tendency of curling of the paper web, in the after-dryer the paper web is dried in a dryer group/groups that make(s) use of normal single- wire draw, and that, in connection with or after the drying, the paper web is treated by means of a device/devices in order to compensate for a tendency of curling of the paper web, which devices are, for example, a steam box, a blow unit, a moistening device, and/or a soft calender.
- devices are, for example, a steam box, a blow unit, a moistening device, and/or a soft calender.
- FI Laid-Open Publication 98,387 (equivalent to US Patent Application No. 08/705, 059) , a method is described for manufacture of paper, in particular of fine paper, to be surface-treated as well as a dry end of a paper machine that makes use of the method.
- the paper web that has been dewatered by pressing is dried in a forward dryer, in which drying energy is applied to the paper web over the entire length of the forward dryer, asymmetrically in the z-direction, from the side of the bottom face of the web.
- Said stage is carried out by means of a number of successive groups with single- wire draw, which are open towards the bottom, on the support of a drying wire.
- the paper web which has a tendency of curling
- an after-treatment part in which it is after-treated while it is, at the same time, moistened and/or worked plastically so that any tendency of curling that arose in the web in the forward drying stage is eliminated.
- the after-dryer could be mentioned groups with twin-wire draw and regulation of steam as well as steam boxes that have been fitted in view of controlling the curl, as well as infra drying and airborne web drying.
- the method for drying of paper comprises the following steps: the paper web to be dried is passed from the press section into a forward dryer section, in which the paper web is dried from the side of its bottom face in dryer groups that apply a normal single- wire draw, said forward dryer section comprising exclusively single- wire groups with normal single- wire draw, from the forward dryer section the paper web is passed into a finishing section, in which the paper web is coated/surface-sized by means of a coating/surface-sizing equipment, dried in an after-dryer section, in which the paper web is dried in at least one dryer group that applies a normal single- wire draw, after which the paper web is calendered in a calender and passed to a reeling station, in which the paper web is reeled into a machine reel, and in the method the curling of the paper web is controlled by means of elements
- the dry end of a paper machine comprises a forward dryer section and a finishing section, which finishing section comprises a coating/surface- sizing equipment, an after-dryer, a calender, and a reeling station.
- the dry end of the paper machine comprises elements and/or assemblies and combinations formed out of said elements in view of controlling the curling of the paper web in the area of the forward dryer section and/or of the finishing section.
- the elements for the control of curl include, among other things, blowing of hot moist air through the wire in the forward dryer, steam boxes employed in the after-dryer, a combination in which steam treatment by means of a steam box has been combined with a cooling cylinder, a lower support belt or wire in the after-dryer, twin-wire groups employed in the after-dryer, blowing through the wire in connection with at least one cylinder in the after-dryer, the ratio of cylinder diameter, spraying of water against the web in the after-dryer, infrared boxes before the calender, transfer of moist air from the forward dryer to the after-dryer so as to be blown onto the web, and mechanical working of the web by means of a spreader bar.
- a further object of the present invention is novel concepts for the control of said properties of quality of paper, in particular of the curl.
- the methods in accordance with the invention are mainly characterized in that the paper web is moistened by the intermediate of a moistening member which is in contact with the paper web.
- the arrangements in accordance with the invention are mainly characterized in that the moistening device is a moistening member which is in contact with the paper web.
- the web is moistened by means of a device that is in contact with the web, and the moistening is produced by the intermediate of a roll or fabric that is in contact with the web, i.e., as the moistening device, a roll/rolls or a fabric that is/are in contact with the web is/are used.
- the moistening device can be a conventional roll or cylinder, which is cooled so that water is condensed onto the face of the roll/cylinder out of a moist hood.
- the moisture in the cylinder pocket / the temperature of the roll is regulated so as to produce a desired condensate film on the face of the roll.
- a moistening jet can also be applied, or the face of the roll can be moistened in other ways.
- a moistening jet can also be applied, or the face of the roll can be moistened in other ways.
- the moistening it is also possible to employ a roll that transfers a water film, onto which roll the water is brought by means of a basin or a similar solution.
- the roll can also be a roll specifically made for moistening purposes, in which roll the moistening can be regulated in the cross direction.
- the profile of moistening of the paper web in the cross direction can be regulated, for example, by regulating the surface temperature profile of the roll, the tension profile of the fabric that presses the web against the roll, by moistening the fabric or the roll in zones.
- the face of the moistening roll absorbs liquid and delivers liquid to the paper web and is, for example, of a brush structure or made of "superlon" cellular plastic or of a corresponding material.
- the moistening can take place by means of steam or water, and the moisture can be passed onto the surface layer either from the interior of the roll or, for example, from a separate water basin.
- a moistening roll in accordance with the invention is placed in the dryer section in the place of a cylinder or directly after the dryer section, for example, to be substituted for an ordinary paper guide roll.
- the web placed in connection with a moistening roll/cylinder on the face of the roll/cylinder can also be dried from the other side by means of an impingement-drying or radiation-heating device.
- the moistening of the web can be carried out by moistening a belt, a drying wire or a drying felt, by means of which fabric the moisture is then transferred to the web.
- a separate additional fabric loop by whose means moisture is transferred to the web.
- the moistening device may also be accomplished so that a drying wire/felt is moistened by means of moistening means in themselves known, for example a water jet, so that the moisture is transferred from the wire/felt to the surface of the web placed on said wire/felt.
- the moistening is placed at a distance from the calendering nip, for example at a distance of about 1 metre, in which case the moistening does not affect the calendering result to an excessive extent, but it affects the curl only.
- moistening pre-calendering is also used in the dryer section to provide favourable surface properties for the paper.
- the cooling can also be accomplished so that cold air is blown against the web or through the wire, in which case it is possible to use, for example, various UnoRun boxes already existing in the dryer section or corre- sponding runnability boxes and other blow boxes, or a separate device can be provided for this purpose, by means of which device blowing of cold air against the web or through the wire can be provided.
- Cooling can also be accomplished as impingement blowing by means of cold air through the wire against a non-heated cylinder. In order to enhance the evaporation, it is possible to use impingement blowing with hot air in connection with a non-heated suction roll or to blow hot air through a wire against the web placed on the face of a drying cylinder.
- the arrangements in accordance with the present invention are particularly well suited for use in connection with a paper or board machine whose dryer section has been accomplished substantially by means of normal single- wire draw.

- the paper web W is carried in at least one group R with single- wire draw on a drying wire 15.
- the machine direction i.e. the direction of progress of the web W
- the group R with single- wire draw is a what is called normal group, in which, for example, steam- heated smooth-faced drying cylinders 10 are placed in the upper horizontal row and the reversing suction cylinders 11 are placed in the lower horizontal row.
- the drying wire 15 is guided by guide rolls 18.
- the drying wire 15 presses the web W to be dried on the drying cylinders 10 against their smooth heated faces, and on the reversing cylinders 11 the web W remains at the side of the outside curve on the outer face of the wire 15.
- the web W is kept reliably on the support of the wire 15 against the effects of centrifugal forces by the effect of a vacuum present on the grooved faces of the reversing cylinders 11 or on the perforated mantle of a corresponding suction roll, by means of which vacuum cross- direction shrinkage of the web W is also counteracted.
- drying cylinder 10 in a dryer group with a roll/cylinder 10X that can be cooled, so that water is condensed out of the moist air in a hood onto the face of said roll/cylinder, and, in such a case, the moisture in the cylinder pocket and/or the temperature of the roll/cylinder 10X can be regulated so that the desired condensate film is produced on the roll 10X face.
- the moisture present on the face of the roll/cylinder 10X moistens the web W running on the roll/cylinder face in view of controlling the curl of the web W.
- a roll/cylinder 10X that can be cooled can be used as one or several cylinders in a group in a suitable position(s) either together with the moistening applications illustrated in the figures or as the only moistening arrangement.
- the moistening equipments shown in the figures can also be used as the only moistening arrangements proper, together with each other or separately.
- a moistening roll 16 in connection with a reversing cylinder 11 in the lower row, a moistening roll 16 has been fitted, whose coating is such that it receives water well.
- the coating it is possible to use, for example, a material similar to a press felt.
- a water metering device 19 In connection with the moistening roll 16, a water metering device 19 has been fitted, which is, for example, a spray beam, a blade doctor, or a profiling device.
- the metering device 18 water is applied to the face of the moistening roll 16, which water is transferred by the roll 16, as it revolves, further to the web W that runs on the reversing suction cylinder 11 so as to moisten the web and, thereby, to control the curl of the web.
- the roll 16 it is also possible to carry out a moistening pre-calendering so that the roll 16 is loaded against the reversing cylinder 11.
- Fig. 2 is a schematic illustration of a moistening roll 41 adjustable in zones, whose mantle 42 is composed of a perforated inner layer 43 and of an outer layer 44 made of a porous and finely divided material, for example felt or cellular plastic.
- the interior of the roll mantle has been divided into zones 46 by means of partition walls 45, which zones are provided with steam circuits 47.
- the steam passes through the perforated mantle 42 and through the porous layer 44, the steam condenses to water, and in this way a water moistening adjustable in zones is permitted so that traces of drops are not visible in the paper.
- the steam circuits 47 can be substituted for by water atomizing devices.
- two moistening rolls 41 for example, similar to that illustrated in Fig. 2 have been fitted, by whose means the web W is moistened in view of controlling the curl of the web W before the web is passed between the calender rolls 48 and 49 so as to be calendered.
- One or both of the moistening rolls 41 shown in the figure can be moistening rolls similar to that shown in Fig. 2.
- the moistening roll/rolls 41 have been fitted in a position in which there is/are normally a paper guide roll/rolls and possibly a separate moistening device for the control of the curl/calendering.
- FIG. 4 is a schematic illustration of an exemplifying embodiment of the invention in which the web W is moistened by means of a water film method so as to control the curl of the web W.
- Moistening of the paper web W by means of the film transfer technique in connection with the dryer group R is carried out by means of a film transfer arrangement fitted in the place of the last cylinder, which arrangement comprises a DynarokTM or an equivalent coated roll 31, onto whose face a water film is formed by means of an equipment, which film is transferred by means of a web application method.
- the water film transfer device is denoted with the reference numeral 31, and the Dynarok roll or equivalent with the reference numeral 31.
- the nip roll 32 forms a nip with the Dynarok roll, and the nip force is about 20...30 kN/m. Further, a felt 35 moistening device 37 has been fitted after the last reversing suction roll 11. In connection with the Dynarok roll 31, a felt 35 has been arranged, which is guided by guide rolls 38. The water film is transferred onto the roll 31 by means of a film transfer equipment 33 in itself known and to the paper web W and/or the felt 35, and through the felt 35 the water film is transferred to the web W by means of the nip roll 32. After the roll 31, the web W is passed over the paper guide roll 39 to the next stage of treatment.
- Fig. 6 is a schematic illustration of an exemplifying embodiment of the invention in which, in connection with the wire 15, on its upper run between the guide rolls 18, a wire moistening device 61 has been fitted, by whose means the wire 15 is moistened so as to transfer the moisture further to the web W. Also, one doctor beam 63 is connected with a cylinder ION moistening device 62, by whose means the cylinder is moistened and, thereby, the web W is moistened.
- the wire moistening device 61 and the cylinder ION moistening device 62 can be used together, in the same application, in the same dryer group, or it is possible to use just one of said devices, or to use them in different dryer groups.
- a separate moistening felt or wire 72 is employed, which is moistened by means of a moistening device 71.
- the moistening felt or wire 72 is guided by guide rolls 73.
- the moistening felt or wire 72 moistens the web W that runs on the face of the reversing cylinder 11 so as to control the curl of the web.
- the moistening felt 72 can also be pressed against the web W by means of a roll. In stead of a moistening felt 72, it is also possible to use a smooth belt, by whose means it is possible to carry out moistening pre-calendering.
- the guide roll placed ahead of or after the nip can be displaceable, in which case the calendering result can also be influenced by means of the belt tension and of the wrapping angle.
- the support contact between the web W and the drying wire 15 is kept adequate also on the straight runs between the drying cylinders 10 and the reversing cylinders 11 by, at least on the runs passing from the drying cylinders 10 onto the reversing cylinders 11 , using blow and/or suction boxes 17, by means of which boxes formation of pressures induced by the wire 15 is also prevented in the closing wedge-shaped nip spaces between the wire 15 and the cylinder 11 mantles.
- the blow-suction boxes 17 are understood as blow boxes whose blowing of air produces a vacuum, and said boxes 17 do not communicate with sources of vacuum. Also other types of blow box solutions in themselves known are included in the scope of the overall concept of the present invention. By means of these blow and/or suction boxes, it is also possible to apply cooling blowings to the web W in order to control the curl.
- the roll 24 in whose connection the impinge- ment blowing unit 20 has been fitted is of the same size as the drying cylinders 10 in the group R.
- the rolls 24 are preferably non-heated, and the blow-suction box 17 can be a blow and/or suction box, by whose means, if desired, it is also possible to blow cooling blowings in view of intensifying the control of curl.
- the roll 24 may also be a roll that can be cooled, in which case moisture is transferred onto the roll face out of the air in the hood. The moisture moistens the web W which runs on the face of the roll 24, in which connection the curl of the web W can be controlled.
- the curl of the web W is also influenced by means of the impingement blowing air blown by means of the impingement blowing unit 20. In stead of an impingement blowing unit 20, it is also possible to use a radiation heater.
