Definitions
- the present invention relates to an improved welding system, in particular to an improved portable welding system which is particularly suitable for use in TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, especially plasma arc welding, or MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding.
- TIG Transmission Inert Gas
- MIG Metal Inert Gas
- conduits with very low friction linings.
- the length of the conduit through which the wire is fed is reduced, for example by suspending the supply reel from a track, along which the reel can move.
- a portable feeder typically weighing about 20kg is provided closer to the working area.
- a further approach is to provide a plurality of motors, located along the length of the conduit, operating in push-pull mode in a chain gang formation. While this approach does lead to improved feeding of low rigidity wire it has the disadvantage of very high cost and does not solve the problems associated with limited access to the working area.
- the present invention provides a wire feed system for a portable welding apparatus, the system comprising:
- wire feed system is designed so as to be wearable by the operator of the welding process
- the support for the wire supply reel and the wire feed drive are mounted on a belt, harness or other wearable support.
- the belt, harness or other wearable support is made from a fire resistant material such as leather, and is designed so as to be worn around the waist of the welding operator.
- the support for the wire supply reel and the wire feed drive are mounted on a harness, to form a back pack when worn by the welding operator.
- the support for the wire supply reel is preferably adapted to receive a standard commercially available wire supply reel.
- the wire feed system preferably further comprises a wire conduit, one end of which is connected to the wire feed drive output and the other end of which terminates in a quick release clip to connect the wire feed conduit to the welding torch.
- the wire feed drive of the wire feed system according to the invention is preferably powered by an electric motor and the wire feed system further comprises either connection leads to connect the motor to a power supply or a rechargeable battery for cordless operation.
- the wire feed system according to the invention preferably further comprises a cover.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt mounted wire feed system, with cover removed, for use in a plasma arc or TIG welding system;
- FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the harness mounted feed system of Figure 1 in use, again with cover removed;
- Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 2 showing a modified harness mounted feed system, again with cover removed;
- Figure 4 is a view of the harness of Figure 3 from the front of the user;
- Figure 5 is an enlarged view of a portion of the harness of Figure 4.
- Figure 6 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a belt mounted system, for use in a MIG welding system
- Figure 7 is a view similar to that of Figure 3 of the system of Figure 6;
- Figure 8 is a view similar to that of Figure 4 from the front of the user of the system of Figure 6.
- a wire feed system shown generally at 10 comprises a support 2 for a wire supply reel and a wire feed drive 4.
- the support 2 and the wire feed drive 4 are mounted on a belt 6.
- a wire supply reel 8 is located on the support 2.
- a feed conduit 12 is attached to the wire feed drive 4 and is provided at its free end with a connector to connect with a quick release connector (not shown) on a welding torch.
- the feed conduit is typically about 700 mm in length.
- the wire feed system 10 is further provided with switches to allow the operator to control the feeding of wire. These switches are located so as to be convenient to operate.
- a cover 14 is provided for the feed system. This cover may be removable as shown, but could also be sealed, for example for use in military applications or hazardous environments.
- Figure 2 shows the system of figure 1 mounted on a user.
- a wire feed system shown generally at 20 comprises similar components to the system of Figure 1.
- the support 2 and wire feed drive 4 are mounted on a harness 22 for wearing by an operator.
- the back mounted system shown in Figure 3 is generally more ergonomically correct than the belt mounted version of Figures 1 and 2, and can therefore be used with larger, and therefore heavier, wire supply reels.
- the feed conduit is typically about one metre in length.
- the system of Figure 3 has a connector 24 which allows a quick disconnection of electrical services to the feeder unit.
- Figure 4 is a view of the system of Figure 3 from the front of the user.
- the harness has a quick release fastener 26 and a quick release fitting 28 on the plasma torch 30 to enable quick removal of the filler wire conduit 12.
- FIG. 5 shows an enlarged view of part of the harness 22 with the filler wire conduit having been removed from the plasma torch 30 now clipped to the harness 22.
- the latter has a simple tongue 32 which engages through an opening 34 in an arm 36 attached to the end of the conduit 12.
- the arm 36 of the conduit 12 also has an open recess 38 which engages about the screw- threaded shank of a knob 40 on the torch 30.
- the opening 34 of the arm 36 engages over a boss or lug on the torch 30 and the knob 40 is screwed down onto the arm 36 to secure the conduit 12 in place on the torch 30.
- the arrangement provides a quick release and attachment both on the torch 30 and the harness 22 for the conduit 12.
- FIG. 6 The embodiment shown in Figure 6 is similar to that shown in Figure 1, except for the fact that the feed conduit 12 of Figure 1 is replaced by a standard "Euro" connector 42 for use in MIG welding applications.
- Figures 7 and 8 are views similar to those of Figures 3 and 4 of the embodiment of Figure 6 in use.
- a quick release connector is shown at 44 to enable all services to the MIG torch and feeder unit to be connected or disconnected quickly.
- the harness has the quick release 26 and is also provide with a holster 46 for the MIG gun when it is not in use.
