Abstract

Apparatus (10) for pumping fluids includes a housing (14) having a pump chamber (56) therein. The pump chamber (56) has an opening formed in one end (22) of the housing (14). An impeller (120) is rotatably mounted in the pump chamber (56), while a diffuser (94) is mounted in the pump chamber (56) through the opening of the housing (14) and has a portion (112) which radially surrounds the impeller (120). The apparatus (110) also includes a forming structure (128), mounted in the pump chamber (56) through the opening, for forming a volute chamber (134) in the pump chamber (56). The impeller (120) and the diffuser (94) are removably mounted in the volute chamber (134). The diffuser (94) and the forming structure (128) are discrete from one another and removably mounted in the pump chamber (56) such that the diffuser (94) and the forming structure (128) are independently and selectively replaceable.
