Abstract

A closure for a container, especially a pail, for use in the field of paint and lacquer industry. The closure is comprising an intermediate ring (1) fixed to the wall (2) of the pail, the intermediate ring (1) having a U-shaped section (3), a cover (4) having a U-shaped end section (5) and a curved termination (6). The termination of the inner part of the U-shaped section (3) of the intermediate ring (1) being curved as a hook (7) and the cover (4) being on the inside of the inner part of the U-shaped end section (5) provided with a bead (8). To meet all the demands of the paint and lacquer producers to strength without providing the packaging with additional equipment or that it must be treated in special manner, the end of the hook (7) is directed outwards and downwards, the upper side of the bead (8) is extending substantially perpendicular from the inside of the inner part of the U-shaped end section (5) of the cover (4), whereby the cover (4) in the closed condition has the upper side of the bead (8) located under and in an interlocked engagement with the termination edge (9) of the hook (7).

Description

Closure for a container
This invention relates to a closure for a container, especially a pail as stated in the preamble of claim 1. Such a closure is described in DE-2 926 041.
The closure is especially intended for use in the field of paint and lacquer industry. This industry has requirements of packaging that must be completely leak proof. In some cases the transportation of paint and lacquer (so-called dangerous freight) has extreme demands to the packaging. These demands are specified by distinctive institutions.
There is no prior art solution in the market of "common" pails that also may be used for transportation of dangerous freight, without supply of additional equipment of mechanical or chemical nature. The object of this invention is to provide a closure for a container that shall meet all the demands of the paint and lacquer producers regarding strength without providing the packaging with additional equipment or to be treated in a special manner.
This object is achieved according to the invention by the characteristic features of the closure as described in claim 1. A preferable embodiment of the closure is stated in the dependent claim.
With the closure according to the invention the paint and lacquer producers can use the same packaging for ordinary production as well as for products of the category dangerous freight. The invention will now be described with reference to a preferred embodiment and to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is partly a sectional perspective view of a pail with a cover, Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view in a larger scale of detail A of Figure 1, showing the closure.
Figure 2 of the drawings is showing detail A of the pail on Figure 1 in a larger scale, the pail having an intermediate ring 1 fixed to the wall 2 of the pail. The intermediate ring 1 has a U-shaped section 3. The termination of the inner part of the U-shaped section 3 of the intermediate ring 1 is curved as a hook 7; the end of the hook 7 is directed outwards and downwards. The cover 4 of the pail has a U-shaped end section 5 and a curved termination 6. On the inside of the inner part of the U- shaped end section 5 the cover 4 is provided with a bead 8.
When the cover 4 is set on the intermediate ring 1 the U-shaped end section 5 is slipped down into the U-shaped section 3, the bead 8 is pushing the hook 7 aside until the termination edge 9 of the hook is snapping on to the upper side of the bead 8. The bead 8 is now located under and in an interlocked engagement with the termination edge 9 of the hook 7. At the same time the underside of the U-shaped end section 5 lays sealingly against the bottom of the U-shaped section 3. There are now three sealing surfaces between the U-shaped end section 5 and the U-shaped section 3: on the sides Aj and A2, and on the bottom A , see Figure 2. When the bead 8 of the cover 4 is located under and in an interlocked engagement with the termination edge 9 of the hook 7 the cover cannot be disengaged by itself by high inner pressure in the container. A high pressure may occur from the content of the container or if the container is dropped and thereby deformed. In a preferred embodiment, shown on Figure 2, the upper side of the hook 7 is in contact with the cover 4 in a closed condition. This gives an additional support if the container should be dropped.
It is obvious that the closure according to the invention may be used also in other types of containers having strict demands to sealing and security of the content.

Claims

Claims
1. A closure for a container, especially a pail, comprising an intermediate ring (1) fixed to the wall (2) of the pail, the intermediate ring (1) having a U-shaped section (3), a cover (4) having a U-shaped end section (5) and a curved termination (6), the U-shaped end section (5) of the cover (4) being adapted to the U-shaped section (3) of the intermediate ring (1), the termination of the inner part of the U- shaped section (3) of the intermediate ring (1) being curved as a hook (7) and the cover (4) being on the inside of the inner part of the U-shaped end section (5) provided with a bead (8), characterised in that the end of the hook (7) is directed outwards and downwards, the upper side of the bead (8) is extending substantially perpendicular from the inside of the inner part of the U-shaped end section (5) of the cover (4), whereby the cover (4) in the closed condition has the upper side of the bead (8) located under and in an interlocked engagement with the termination edge (9) of the hook (7).
2. A closure according to claim 1, characterised in that the upper side of the hook (7) is in contact with the cover (4) in the closed condition.
