Portable apparatus for determining the geographic position and sending on telephone the same to a service center
The present invention relates to the value added services regarding the geographic positions of the users who ask for them. More particularly, the invention relates to a hand- held apparatus capable of taking a bearing of the geographic positon of the user by satellite connection of the GPS (Global Positioning System) type and usable in combination with any telephone apparatus in order to communicate the geographic position of the user to a service centre that will supply value added services by phone .
This allows any telephone subscriber, particularly those provided with cellular telephone, to be supplied with all of the information services regarding the geographic bearing.
It is useful to recall that GPS is based on a "constellation" of satellites orbiting around the earth and transmitting signals which can be used for taking information about time, position and speed. Such information may be combined with other systems for a variety of purposes and activities. Many GPS apparatuses are currently used including hand-held apparatuses capable of taking a bearing and showing a map previously stored in a CD-ROM on a suitable display on which the position determined by GPS is shown.
In recent time the very large spread of the mobile telephony has pointed out the necessity to supply more and more information to the subscribers to that service and particularly to "personalize" the information asked by the users according to their geographic position.
Therefore, the present invention seeks to provide a very cheap apparatus that takes the bearing of the geographic position and is capable of being advantageously used in combination with any cellular phone of the currently traded type without the need of any hardware and/or software modification as well as without the necessity to buy an expensive, complicated GPS apparatus of the above-mentioned type. In this way, telephone subscribers are supplied with information and services concerning not only their geographic positions but also the destination such as for example a tourist information and/or navigation service just by means of a simple phone call. This has been achieved by providing the users with a hand-held apparatus that is capable of taking the bearing of the geographic position by GPS and communicating the same by a phone call to a service centre that processes and transmits immediately the requested information to the users during the same phone call.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, users who want to have access to the system should have a hand-held apparatus
as well as a telephone apparatus, preferably of the hand-held type.
To sum up, when the hand-held apparatus is switched on, it carries out the detection of the position by GPS and is capable of transmitting coded acoustic signals controlled by the user and including audio information relative to the position which can be sent through the microphone of a telephone apparatus to a service centre which recognizes and decodes such information so that the position of the calling user can be determined.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A better understanding of the invention will ensue from the following detailed description with reference to the annexed drawings which show, only by way of a not limiting example, a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings :
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of the hand-held apparatus according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a diagram showing the hand-held apparatus of Fig. 1 inserted in an additional apparatus to be used with a voice-actuated device;
Fig. 3 shows the connections between user and a service centre according to the invention;
Fig. 4 is a block diagram of the operation of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT With particular reference to Fig. 1, the hand-held apparatus 1 is an electronic apparatus preferably based on integrated circuits including a receiver/processor RE for processing GPS signals which is provided with a suitable antenna Al and controlled by the user for sending the received signals to a coder/decoder CD which processes GPS signals and send them to a loudspeaker AP connected in series with a signal amplifier AMP. Such hand-held apparatus 1 is preferably supplied by a cell B which is connected to power supply AL1 by an on/off switch I.
When the user presses a control button P, the information produced by GPS-signal receiver/processor RE is processed and fed to coder CD and then amplified by amplifier AMP and given out of loudspeaker AP.
In the preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a light signal generator S for indicating the state of operation of apparatus 1 is also provided. According to the invention, an additional apparatus 2 shown in Fig. 2 is also provided in which the handheld apparatus 1 is inserted for its use in a vehicle or in a voice-actuated device of a cellular phone. Such additional apparatus 2 has essentially two functions: the first function is to supply hand-held apparatus 1 with the power generated by the vehicle,
thus excluding cell B inside apparatus 1; the second function is to take the amplified signal at the output of hand-held apparatus 1 and to feed it directly to the voice-actuated device installed in the vehicle without any manual operation by the user.
To this end, such additional apparatus 2 preferably based on integrated circuits is provided with: a casing for housing hand-held apparatus 1 and taking power from the electric system of the vehicle and adapting the same to hand-held apparatus 1 by means of a supplementary power supply AL2 so as to bypass cell B and to supply directly power supply A 1; and an interface circuit IW which connects GPS-signal coder/decoder CD of the hand-held apparatus with the voice-actuated device of the cellular phone installed in the vehicle.
With particular reference to Fig. 3, the present invention always needs the combination of hand-held apparatus 1 and a telephone apparatus which is enabled to call service centre 3.
With regard to this, it is interesting to analyze at least some value added services which are made available by the present invention when service centre 3 knows the bearing of the user through the mobile apparatus 1 : bearing service. After having taken the bearing of the user by means of the signal generated by handheld apparatus 1, the service centre supplies the user through telephone line with information regarding shops or places of great interest near the present or
future, terrestrial geographic position of the user; guidance service . After having taken the bearing of the user by means of the signal generated by handheld apparatus 1, the service centre supplies the user through telephone line with information regarding the optimal route for connecting two places: the starting place, already communicated to the service centre by the hand-held apparatus 1 through telephone line, and the destination place which can be a place of interest, a street with street number or a special feature of a place;
- weather-forecast service. After having taken the bearing of the user by means of the signal generated by hand-held apparatus 1, the service centre supplies the user through telephone line with information regarding the metcast, and particularly the following information: rainfall (millimetres of rain) , temperature (°C), atmospheric pressure (mbar) , relative humidity, wind speed (m/s) , direction of the wind (degrees); navigation service. After having taken the bearing of the user by means of the signal generated by hand-held apparatus 1, the service centre guides the user through telephone line along a (urban or extraurban) route until the destination communicated by the user during the request and selection of services is reached; tourist information service. After having taken the bearing of the user by means of the signal generated by hand-held apparatus 1, the service centre
supplies the user through telephone line with information regarding monuments or places of historical-artistic interest near the user. play and entertainment service. After having taken the bearing of the user by means of the signal generated by hand-held apparatus 1, the service centre supplies the user through telephone line with play and entertainment services which make use of a geographic position. Such services are supplied by the service centre after phone conversation with the user.
These and other services are supplied to the user who can walk or run on a vehicle provided with a voice- actuated device by using the additional apparatus 2. The mode of interaction among user, hand-held apparatus 1, telephone, and service centre 3 will be now analyzed.
The flow chart of Fig. 4 shows in detail the logical operating sequence of the invention from which it is clearly seen the following simple procedure carried out by the user:
1. calling service centre;
2. switching on the hand-held GPS-bearing device so that the position of the user can be determined;
3. selecting by phone the desired service among those available and pointed out by the service centre;
4. bringing, on request of the service centre, the loudspeaker of the hand-held apparatus 1 near the microphone of the telephone, and switching it on by pushing button P to send a phone message; 5. waiting the confirmation that data concerning the
bearing has been correctly received and, if it is the case, repeating the preceding step;
6. resorting to the requested service by listening to the information sent by service centre 3 and/or reading data on the display of the telephone (if the latter is provided with the former) ;
7. switching out the phone connection after a warning signal by the service centre.
It should be appreciated that the audio signal generated by the hand-held apparatus 1 includes some information relative to the apparatus and its position. Particularly, the data transmitted includes: a) identification code of the mobile apparatus 1 which is used by service centre 3 for processing accounting and service charge data, in case the latter should be charged to the user; b) the terrestrial geographic position expressed in latitude, longitude and altitude referred to the local tangent plane LTP or geocentric coordinates ECEF (Earth Centred Earth Fixed) defined by the projections of the user's position to the orthogonal axes X, Y, Z from the earth centre. c) the measurement of the distance between GPS receiver and GPS satellite consisting of the group of measurements of the distances between the GPS-signal receiver/processor RE and the corresponding GPS satellites. There is a measurement for each GPS satellite whose signal is received and processed by the receiver/processor RE. Such distance measurement is used by service centre 3 for further improving the
precision of the bearing of above item b) ; d) data relative to the clock of GPS-signal receiver/processor RE, including: UTC time (Universal Time Coordinated) at which the bearing has been carried out, clock bias, and clock drift.
It is self-evident that the services which can be supplied to the users are not limited to those previously described. For example, it is possible to carry out a guided visit of a place just asking the user to send from time to time his position by the mobile apparatus 1 according to the invention. The present invention has been described and illustrated according to a preferred embodiment thereof, however, it should be understood that those skilled in the art can make modifications and/or equivalent replacements without departing from the scope of the present industrial invention.
