  • a radiation delivery system which would: a) deliver a predetermined totally-cumulative and homogenous dose of radiation to the lesion site, at a predetermined penetration depth, while minimizing the exposure of surrounding healthy tissue to the radiation; b) enable the treating physician or other health-care personnel to be bedside to the patient during the administration of the radiation therapy without exposing the physician or health care personnel to any unreasonable risk; c) use radiation material that is readily and inexpensively available from a commercial provider; d) use minimal special equipment storage, or delivery devices, except for routine facilities available in most nuclear medicine or radiation oncology departments; e) use a radiation carrier material that if applied as an unsealed free-gas form, the inert, noble gas properties essentially enable the molecules of the carrier material to rapidly dissipate throughout the body of the patient without any prolonged organ accumulation or chemical interaction, and rapid dilution of the carrier material is quickly re-released from the bloodstream through the lungs; f) minimize long term occlusion of normal

Abstract

L'invention concerne un cathéter rempli d'un matériau support de rayonnement tel qu'un gaz radioactif inerte servant au traitement de la resténose après une angioplastie, et de pathologies malignes. Le cathéter gonflé peut se composer d'un seul élément ou, dans une autre version, d'une pluralité de compartiments discrets permettant de transporter le matériau support radioactif, à travers lesquels le sang peut continuer à circuler pendant l'application de la radiothérapie prescrite. Lorsque le support radioactif est un gaz tel que le Xénon 133, on peut se servir d'un dispositif (1400) d'injection qui permet l'utilisation d'un flacon (1401) de source gazeuse standard pouvant être chargé dans un boîtier ou un compartiment (1403) pour flacon de source radioactive. Les moyens entourant le flacon (1404) peuvent également servir de mécanisme (1442) de poussée servant à pousser le flacon (1401) contenant la source en direction d'une ou de plusieurs canule(s) (1406, 1454) de perçage qui permettent le passage du gaz radioactif dans le cathéter. Dans une série de versions, le gaz radioactif est retiré à travers des moyens (1409) sélecteurs tels qu'une soupape à positions multiples dans une chambre (1411) à volume variable étanche au gaz telle qu'une seringue, qui est alors déployée pour distribuer le gaz dans le cathéter. Après le traitement, le gaz est récupéré dans la seringue et retourné dans le flacon (1401) de source. Dans une autre série de versions, une seringue remplie d'un liquide est utilisée pour déplacer le gaz soit directement dans le cathéter (1422) de distribution, soit dans une seconde seringue qui injecte le gaz dans le cathéter (1422) de distribution.
