Definitions
- Container for transport and storage of oil -/gas samples
- the present invention relates to a container for transport and storage of oil-/gas samples, comprising a main cylindrical body having an internally displaceable piston and end lid or end pieces.
- a container for transport and storage of oil-/gas samples comprising a main cylindrical body having an internally displaceable piston and end lid or end pieces.
- On boring for oil and gas automatic samplers are sent down in the bore hole for collecting specimens.
- the specimens are transferred to transport containers which are sent to the analytical laboratory.
- Specimens from oil/gas separators are also transferred to transport containers for shipment to the laboratory. Individual specimens will be kept for several years and therefore heavy demands are placed on the diffusion tightness of the container.
- a container of such type is described earlier in Norwegian Patenfl.6Nol64. It consists of a hollow body with in and outlet openings on each side of the container.
- the container is composed of two halves where a metal membrane divides the hollow body into two chambers.
- the container can have an inner lining where the membrane is welded fast between the two lining halves.
- the in/outlet openings are arranged at right angles to the membrane.
- the membrane flexes initially against the one container half. During filling of the container with oil the membrane is reversed over to the opposite side.
- Such a container must be able to be used over a very wide range of pressure from about 0.5 - 700 bar. The containers are tested at a pressure of over 1000 bar.
- the container according to the invention is based on a cylinder/piston type solution as indicated by way of introduction and which is characterised in that the end pieces are connected to a common, concentrically arranged bar which also serves as a guide for the piston of the cylinder, as indicated in accompanying claim 1.
- the dependent claim 2 states advantageous features of the invention.
- Fig. 1 shows in cross-section a container in accordance with the invention.
- Fig. 2 shows in section the body of the container with a container bar but without end pieces .
- Fig. 3 shows in section a split arrangement of an upper end piece of the container with valves, together with piston and handle.
- Fig. 4 shows in section the lower end piece with valves .
- the container in accordance with the invention consists in broad outline of a mainly cylindrical container body with an upper and lower end piece 3 , 4 which are each connected to a bar 2 arranged concentrically in the container body, together with a piston 5 and a mixing ring 6 which is adapted to be displaced between upper and lower positions in the container along the bar 2.
- the cylinder 1 and the bar 2 are further illustrated in Fig. 2.
- the bar 2 is provided at the ends with threaded portions 7,8 for fastening of the end pieces, cf . later paragraph.
- the components which are included in the upper part of the container, as are illustrated in juxtaposition in Fig. 1, are shown further in exploded form in Fig. 3.
- the piston is provided with sealing rings 9,10 against the container 1 and the bar 2 respectively.
- the spaces which are formed above and below the piston 5 are thus separated from and physically sealed in relation to each other during emptying and filling of the container.
- a mixing ring 6 which is adapted to be displaced freely along the bar 2 (see later paragraph) .
- This mixing ring fits into an organised space between the piston 5 and upper end piece 3 when the piston is in the upper position (see Fig. 1) .
- the upper end piece 3 is constituted by a circular disc-shaped body having a diameter which fits into the internal diameter of the container body 1, but with a flange 11 which is adapted to abut the end of the container body 1.
- the end piece 3 is provided with grooves for gaskets 12 which seal against the container body 1, and are held fast in the container body 1 by means of a locking screw 13 which extends through the body of the container at its end.
- Each of the bodies 18,19 are provided with grooves for gaskets 20 and 21, respectively, and respective upper threaded portions 22 and 23 which are complementary with the threads 16,17 of the bores 14,15.
- the coupling bodies 18 is provided with a bore 24 having internal threads 25 for coupling to a hose or the like (not shown) on drawing off oil/gas from the container, or for screwing in a plug 26 for blanking out the opening when the container is under storage or transport .
- the valve body is provided with a bore 27 for a valve 25 for closing and opening the connection between the inner storage space of the container and the coupling bore 24.
- the valve consists of a valve needle screw 29 which is adapted to bear against a valve seat 28 in the bore 27, a threaded valve disc 31 for the valve screw 27, plus a locking disc 32 having external threads 33 for screwing into the bore 27 which has complementary threads 34.
- An additional bore 39 extends from the valve and into the interior of the container.
- the upper end piece is secured to the bar 2 by means of a cap nut 40 having internal threads 41, the end piece 3 being pressed into abutment against a shoulder portion 42 on the bar 2 (see also Fig. 2) .
- the cap nut is otherwise provided with a bore 43 for introducing a handle in the form of a preferably elongate, circular bar 44.
- the lower end piece 4 (see Fig. 1 and Fig. 4) consists of a circular disc-shaped body which has grooves for gaskets 46 and which is adapted to bear sealingly against the inside of the container 1.
- This lower end piece has corresponding valves 35 and corresponding coupling bore 24 with internal threads 25 for coupling of a hose (not shown) or plug 26, as mentioned above when involving the upper end piece.
- valve 35 and the coupling bore 24 are however a little different from the upper end cap, respective bores 47 and 48 being arranged which extend radially outwards and which are connected to an annular groove 49 in the end piece 4.
- the lower end piece is adapted to be secured to the bar 2 by means of a thread connection 50,8 in the end piece 4 and the bar 2, respectively, the end piece being adapted to be pressed into abutment with a shoulder portion 51 on the bolt.
- the piston 5 and the mixing ring 6 are first threaded on the bar 2. Thereafter the end pieces 3 and 4 are fastened to the bar as explained above.
- the valves 35 and the plugs 26 can be mounted in the end pieces in advance or afterwards.
- Piston 5 mixing ring 6 and the end pieces 3 and 4 are now held together as a unit of the bar 2 and are introduced into the container from above (see Fig. 1) until the flange 11 abuts against the upper end of the container.
- the locking screw 13 can now be installed and thus secures the installed unit in the container.
- the invention otherwise functions in the following manner (see Fig. 1) .
- a counter-pressure fluid for example glycol
- glycol for example glycol
- the container is now ready to be filled with a specimen of oil or gas.
- An oil-/gas hose is coupled to the bore 24 in the upper end piece 3.
- the valves 35 in both the end pieces are kept closed at the start.
- the valve 35 in the upper end piece is fully opened, while the corresponding valve in the lower end piece is opened a little so as to release counter-pressure fluid. Oil will now flow into the container.
- the piston When all the counter-pressure fluid is drained out, the piston will be in the lower position and abuts the lower end piece 4.
- the container will then be full of oil/gas and the valve 35 can be closed and the plugs 26 can be screwed into place.
- On withdrawal of oil/gas from the container it will be appropriate first to turn the container up/down a few times.
- the mixing ring 6 will thereby, by means of the force of gravity, be carried backwards and forwards along the bar 2 so that the contents (the oil/gas) in the container are well mixed.
- a drain hose is coupled to the bore 24 in the upper end piece 3 and the valve 35 is opened.
- An additional hose for the supply of pressure-set counter-pressure fluid is coupled to the bore 26 in the lower end piece 4 and the valve 35 is opened as required so that the piston is pressed upwards by means of the counter-pressure fluid and the oil/gas is pressed out of the container.
