Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for applying heat shrink film to containers and to containers formed by such methods.
- Heated shrink film is used to replace decorative printing paper labels, foil labels or other decorative methods for various containers.
- Heated shrink film is a material that shrinks when heated. It can be made form polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polystyrene, and similar plastics. Unprinted or printed film can also be used as a protective surface.
- Fig. 1 is a schematic view showing a can, in accordance with the present invention, having a mandrel or extension tool in engagement or close proximity with the bottom of a can with a shrink film wrapped around both the can and the extension tool.
- Fig. 2a is a schematic sectional view showing a can having a heat shrinkable film covering the can and extending from the bottom thereof with an overhang less than the curved length of a foot of the bottom of the can.
- Fig. 2b is a schematic sectional view showing the can of Fig. 2a after heat has been applied to the heat shrinkable film.
- Fig. 2c is an enlarged view of a portion of Fig. 2b showing the heat shrinkable film conforming to the foot of the can.
- Figs. 3a, 3b and 3c are views corresponding to Figs. 2a, 2b and 2c, respectively, showing the heat shrinkable film extending from the bottom of a can with an overhang greater than the curved length of the foot of the can.
- Figs. 4a-4f show views of the use of a forming plug, in accordance with the present invention, to make the heat shrinkable film turn one or two or more times after it has made its first turning after heating, with Fig. 4a showing the can and film prior to heat being applied; Fig. 4b showing the film after heat has been applied with the forming plug being moved into forming position; Fig. 4c showing the forming plug in engagement with the film and the bottom of the can; and Figs. 4d and 4e showing the film after removal of the forming plug, Fig. 4e being an enlargement of the foot portion of the can.
- Each shrink film is applied to a container as a preformed sleeve or is applied by wrapping around the container using adhesive which is inside the underlap and overlap so that a sleeve is formed during the process. If the film is a premade sleeve then it can be made to extend beyond the wall of the container without any problem being accounted. If, however, the film is wrapped around the container, either as part of a continuous roll or in precut segments, the container serves as a mandrel and, as long as the film does not extend beyond the wall of the containers, there is no problem and the film may be wrapped and glued. However, if the film extends beyond the walls of the container, then there is no mandrel against which the film can be pressed for adhesion to take place.
- an extension tool 10 is placed in engagement or close proximity with the bottom 11 of a can 12.
- This extension tool 10 then serves along with the can 12 as a mandrel.
- a film 13 may then be applied onto the can 12 with the trailing edge overlapping the leading edge and with an adhesive previously applied to at least one of the edges forming a firm bond between the overlapped edges.
- the extension tool 10 is then withdrawn leaving a film extension 14 extending from the bottom 11 of the can 12.
- the extension tool 10 may be made from a non-stick material so that the adhesive used will not stick to it.
- FIGs. 2a-2c and 3a-3c there are shown schematic illustrations of two cases of heat shrinking a film 13 which extends from the bottom 11 of the can 12.
- the film 13 extends from the bottom 11 of the can 12 with an overhang 14 which is less than the external curvature 15 of a foot 16 of the can bottom 11. Accordingly, when heat is applied to the film
- shrink film 13 In order to provide enhanced protection to the internal, as well as external foot curvatures 15 and 17, respectively, and for aesthetic purposes and to prevent an unattached horizontal projection if the bottom 11 is to be fully protected, it is desirable to again turn the shrink film 13 through one or more turns so as to conform to the shape of various can bottoms 11. The same can be done for the top configuration. However, shrink film 13 by itself when heated will not do this by its very nature.
- the overhang 14 we conform the overhang 14 to the bottom of the can 12 by using a forming plug 18 made to conform exactly to the bottom contour or part of the bottom contour of the container, and we use this plug 18 to press the warm extending overhang 14 (reheated if necessary and a heated forming plug if necessary) and actually mechanically force the overhang 14 into place.
- the overhang 14 has a length sufficient to cover the outer foot curvature 15 and at least part of the inner foot curvature 17.
- the overhang 14 may have a greater length 14a, as shown by dashed lines, so that it covers part of the dome 19 of the can bottom.
- the length of the overhang 14 and the shape of the forming plug 18 control the location and the placement of the film so as to conform the film 13 to the container configuration.
- Both the extension tool 10 (Fig. 1) and the forming plug 18 (Figs. 4b and 4c) can be of solid nonstick material or just have a non-stick skin and a metal core which, in the case of the forming plug 18, can be heated if necessary for a particular film or special contour.
- the forming plug 18 can have a resilient surface so that the film 13 is forced snugly into perfect conformance with the container shape.
- the use of a resilient forming plug can force the film into these various configurations.
