Concrètement, une fois la boîte mise en forme par de simples opérations de pliage et de collage, on utilise un côté resté ouvert de la boîte pour introduire les objets, puis ce côté ouvert est fermé par des rabats qui sont repliés et assemblés entre eux. La boîte fermée peut alors être commercialisée, et l'utilisateur est invité à rompre les lignes d'affaiblissement pour découper un pan de la boîte qui dégage l'ouverture donnant accès aux objets. Cette ouverture d'accès est donc différente de celle utilisée pour le remplissage de la boîte. Le pan de la boîte ainsi découpé pour dégager l'ouverture d'accès peut être arraché mais, le plus souvent, lorsque les objets ne sont pas utilisés ou consommés en une seule fois, il est connu d'utiliser ce pan comme un couvercle rabattable qui permet de refermer temporairement la boîte. A cet effet, on prévoit souvent une languette intégrée au couvercle et qui vient s ' engager dans une ouverture prédécoupée sur une des faces de la boîte. L'expérience montre que ce type de languette ne donne pas entièrement satisfaction.
