Abstract
The present invention relates to a utility lighter (10) including a housing (12) having a handle (14) at one end (16) and a nozzle (18) at another end (20) and including a fuel supply (22) connected for selective fluid communication with the nozzle (18). An ignitor assembly, such as a piezoelectric mechanism (34), is operatively connected to the housing (12) for generating a spark proximate the nozzle (18) and an actuating assembly (38, 80, 46) is connected to the housing (12) proximate the handle and operates to both dispense fuel from the fuel supply (22) and to activate the ignitor assembly (34). A linking mechanism (120, 134, 140) is provided in order to initiate the flow of fuel from the fuel supply prior to generation of a spark such that a spark is generated when fuel is present at the nozzle (18). A locating mechanism (150, 152, 162, 164) is provided proximate the valve (28) of the fuel container (22) in order to properly position the fuel container (22) within the housing (12). In addition, an isolator cap (170) is disposed around the nozzle (18) to assist in directing the spark in the vicinity of the nozzle (18).
Claims
WO 98/31774 AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 4 November 1998 (04.11.98); new claims 53 and 54 added; remaining claims unchanged (1 page)] an electric ignitor assembly operatively connected to the housing for generating a spark in the spark gap, the electric ignitor assembly being operative to generate a voltage between first and second electrical contacts thereof, the first electrical contact being in contact with the electrically conductive housing portion and the second contact being electrically connected to the nozzle; an actuating assembly connected to the housing proximate the handle and operative to activate the valve actuator and the electric ignitor assembly; and a non-electrically conductive isolator cap for directing the travel of sparks across the spark gap, said isolator cap being disposed around at least a portion of the nozzle .
50. The utility lighter of claim 49, wherein the isolator cap is disposed inside of said electrically conductive housing portion.
51. The utility lighter of claim 50, wherein the isolator cap includes a longitudinal channel extending therethrough, with the nozzle being positioned within the channel, and a plurality of legs extending distally from a central portion of the isolator cap with a gap formed between each leg, the nozzle outlet being substantially centrally located between the plurality of legs.
52. The utility lighter of claim 51, wherein the isolator cap includes four legs and the electrically conductive housing portion includes a tab which extends toward the nozzle between two of the legs.
53. The utility lighter of claim 4, wherein the trigger may be repeatedly actuated as long as the latch member is actuated by the user.
54. The utility lighter of claim 8, wherein the trigger may be repeatedly actuated as long as the hooked tab of the latch member disengages from the stop member structure on the linking rod.
