Definitions
- This relates to the field of electrical connectors and more particularly to connectors for memory cards.
- memory cards such as PCMCIA cards
- Such cards contain a circuit board element with electronic components mounted thereon enclosed within a conductive shield, defining a compact, low height profile.
- an electrical connector defining a mating face having an insulative plastic housing containing a low height array of closely spaced contacts that upon insertion of the memory card into a card reader, become electrically connected with corresponding contacts of a connector of the card reader, for transmission of data between the card and the computer.
- the contacts are in a two-row array of sixty- eight positions, each with a pair of opposed leaf springs that receive therebetween a post of the mating connector.
- Examples of memory cards are disclosed in U.S. Patents Nos. 5,472,349; 5,242,310 and 5,339,222; and a card reader with a mating connector is disclosed in U.S. Patents Nos. 5,288,247 and 5,290,174. It is desired to enhance the normal force between the mating contact pairs of the memory card connector and the mating connector.
- the connector of the present invention is adapted to enhance the normal force between the female contacts of the memory card connector and the male contacts of the mating connector of the card reader.
- a single leaf spring contact section is provided on each female contact, that urges the leading end portion of the corresponding pin contact of the mating connector to flex into a recess along the opposing passageway side wall .
- FIGURES 1 and 2 are isometric assembled and exploded views of a memory card having a connector mounted at a leading edge thereof;
- FIGURE 3 is an isometric view of the connector of FIGS. 1 and 2, with a contact exploded from the assembly face thereof;
- FIGURES 4 and 5 are isometric and elevation views of a contact of a first embodiment of the invention having resilient retention members;
- FIGURE 6 is a longitudinal section plan view of the housing with contacts disposed in passageways of a row thereof;
- FIGURES 7 and 8 are enlarged cross-sectional views of the connector at a single passageway thereof with a contact of FIGS. 4 to 6 therein, before and after ultrasonic welding;
- FIGURE 9 is a longitudinal section view of a pair of upper and lower passageways of the connector of FIG. 3 with a contact of FIGS. 4 to 8 in each, before ultrasonic welding;
- FIGURE 10 is a longitudinal section view similar to FIG. 9 after ultrasonic welding, with the connector adapted to permit deflection in opposed directions of the pins of the mating connector upon mating.
- FIGURES 1 and 2 are illustrative of a memory card assembly with which the present invention may be used.
- Memory card assembly 10 includes a circuit card 12, shield covers 14 with plastic frame portions 16 integrally molded onto peripheral edge portions, and a PCMCIA connector 18 mounted at leading edge 20 of circuit card 12, and a modem adapter connector 22 at a trailing edge 24 for interconnection of a cable of peripheral equipment (not shown) .
- Connector 18 includes a housing 26 of dielectric material having an array of passageways extending from a mating face to rearward or assembly face 28.
- An array of contacts 30 are disposed in respective passageways and include contact sections exposed within passageway entrances along the mating face for electrical engagement with complementary contacts of a mating connector (see FIG. 10) of a card reader within the computer (not shown) , and solder tails 32 protruding for soldering to respective contact pads of circuit board 12.
- FIG. 3 illustrates a connector 40 of the present invention particularly useful with a PCMCIA or memory card assembly, having a housing 42 of dielectric material and two rows of passageways 44 extending from mating face 46 to rear or assembly face 48.
- Representative solder tails 50 of contacts 52 are seen extending rearwardly from assembly face 48 to be soldered to a circuit card of the memory card assembly.
- contact 52 is a generally planar member with a single leaf spring defining its contact section 54.
- Body section 56 is also a generally planar section having side edges 58 along which are formed preferably two pairs of rearwardly extending resilient retention sections 60,62 having inner sheared edges 64,66 and sheared transverse trailing edges 68,70 for a portion of the resilient retention sections to be bent arcuately to extend angled out of the plane of the body section preferably in a common direction and define engagement portions, while resulting in clearances in the body section thereunder.
- the portions are adapted to be deflected in the opposite direction into the plane and into the clearances during insertion into a passageway of the housing upon engagement with an adjacent surface of the passageway wall .
- the contact is stamped and formed of 0.005 inch stock such as of beryllium copper and the contacts of each row may be stamped and formed on carrier strips as is conventional, and loaded simultaneously into respective passageways 44 after which the carrier strips are removed.
- FIG. 6 several contacts 52 are seen inserted into respective passageways 44 of a row of housing 42 of connector 40.
- Side edges 58 of body sections 56 extend laterally outwardly into widened slots 72 of passageways 44, with the slots 72 just incrementally higher than the thickness of body sections 56.
- Upwardly bent trailing edges 68,70 have been deflected into the plane of body section 56 following insertion into and along slots 72.
- Forward end 74 of leaf spring contact section 54 is also widened with side edge portions 76 thereof also disposed in slots 72 to maintain its position during repeated mating cycles as leaf spring 54 is repeatedly deflected and resiles.
- FIGS. 7 through 10 illustrate the effects of using the resilient retention sections of the contacts of the present invention in response to the application of energy, such as ultrasonic energy, to the connector during final stages of assembly of the memory card to join the opposed plastic cover portions to each other.
- energy such as ultrasonic energy
- FIGS. 7 and 9 the contact 52 has just been fully inserted into its respective passageway 44, with widened body section 56 extending laterally into low height slots 72 preferably of slightly less width resulting in the body section edges "plowing" through the plastic material of the slot side walls.
- the upper and lower walls of the slots cause deflection of the resilient retention sections 60,62 at least partially into respective clearances in the plane of the body section 56, thereby storing energy into the retention sections that continues to exert a force concentrated on the upper slot wall 78, prior to application of energy E .
- Memory card connector housing 40 includes an upper row of passageways 44a and a lower row of passageways 44b, wherein are disposed and retained respective contacts 52a, 52b.
- Single leaf spring contact sections 54a, 54b extend along inner passageway wall surfaces 80a, 80b of a center barrier wall 82 of the housing, to leading ends 74a, 74b that preferably are constrained by widened side portions disposed in slot portions 72a, 72b of the passageways (see FIG. 6) .
- recesses 84a, 84b are defined along outer passageway wall surfaces 86a, 86b opposed to leaf spring contact sections 52a, 52b.
- a mating connector 100 includes an upper row of pin contacts 102 and a lower row of pin contacts 104.
- leading end portions 106,108 of flexible pin contacts 102,104 engage leaf spring contact sections 54a, 54b and are flexed outwardly toward outer passageway wall surfaces 86a, 86b and into recesses 84a, 84b while the leaf spring contact sections are also deflected toward inner passageway wall surfaces 80a, 80b.
- the pins of the upper and lower rows are deflected in opposite directions and cancel each other out so far as the connectors are concerned.
- Pin contacts 102,104 are of the type having a thickness of about 0.017 inches.
- the depth of recesses 84a, 84b is selected carefully so that outer wall surfaces 86a, 86b are engaged by deflected leading end portions 106,108 of pin contacts 102,104 prior to the extent of deflection becoming substantial, to assure that the pin contacts are not overstressed when mated.
- the deflection of both contacts of a mated pair combine to give a more resilient system and allows a wide range of tolerance in deflection while maintaining sufficient normal force for a reliable electrical interface.
- the contact retention system hereof may be used on connectors other than memory card connectors .
