Definitions

  • the invention concerns a screwdriver blade and a bone screw system in which the screwdriver has the capability of holding the screw and delivering it to application site for plate-screw fixation of bone segments in surgery.
  • Plate and screw fixation is the treatment of choice for stabilization of bone fractures following craniofacial trauma or other trauma or for stabilization of bone segments after correction of cranial, maxillofacial or other bone deformities.
  • the surgeon is obliged to apply plates and screws for stabilization of a fracture deep in the operative field, through a relatively small incision.
  • the surgeon needs a screwdriver which will retain a screw on the tip for delivering and twisting the screw in the desired site.
  • Many types of screwdrivers and screws have been described for this purpose. Some of these techniques use wax to attach the screwdriver to the screw (Munro IR: The Luhr Fixation system for the Craniofacial Skeleton.
  • Screwdrivers with variously shaped interference fit systems are not either very efficient from the beginning or loose their efficacy in a short time due to metallic erosion of their tips.
  • screwdrivers with screw holding sleeves are successful to some degree they are not ideal.
  • the sleeves on the screwdriver add an extra thickness to the shank. This situation has some drawbacks.
  • the sleeves may lose their screw holding capability in time due to deformation and erosion of the metal. Spring-loaded self retaining mechanisms also lose their efficacy in a short time due to deformation of the spring.
  • a bone screw which has a cylindrical groove on the bottom of its slot and a screwdriver which has a tip with equal or smaller but opposite faces.
  • This system represents a further development of already existing systems.
  • the bone screw is retained on the screwdriver without any sleeves with improved visibility.
  • the bone screw is more securely held on the screwdriver and easily handled in restricted surgical sites.
  • This type of screw head and screwdriver tip interference ensures a good surface contact and therefore a better twisting power.
  • Figure 1 is a three dimensional oblique view illustrating the tip of the screwdriver blade mentioned in this invention.
  • Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the bone screw to be used with the screwdriver described in figure 1 .
  • Figure 3 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the screwdriver blade holding the bone screw.
  • Figure 1 illustrates the screwdriver blade with a cylindrical protuberance on its tip from an oblique view.
  • the blade 1 has a cylindrical protuberance 2 on the tip.
  • the longitudinal axis of the cylinder is perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 3.
  • the diameter of the circle forming the base 4 of the cylinder is equal to or slightly different from the diameter of the circle forming the top 5 of the cylinder.
  • the portion of the blade just below the protuberance 6 has a thickness equal to or smaller than the width of the slit on the screw head . Then the thickness of the blade gradually increases until it reaches the thickness of the shaft 3.
  • FIG 2 illustrates the bone screw 7 to be used with this screwdriver blade 1 .
  • the screw has a head 8 being, at least in a portion, hemispherical.
  • the screw has a slit 9 on its head with a width greater than thickness of the blade just below the protuberance 6. As the slit goes deeper, the width of the slit increases forming a cylindrical groove 10 with a diameter which is equal to or greater than both top and bottom diameters of the cylinder forming the tip of the screwdriver blade.
  • Figure 3 illustrates the use of described screwdriver blade 1 placed into the slot 10 of the described bone screw 7.
  • the protuberance 2 on the tip of the screwdriver is slipped into the slot 10 on the head 8 of the bone screw, the side with smaller diameter entering first.
  • the screwdriver is pulled upwards and detached from the screw.
  • the blade is used as a changeable blade mounted on a handle.
