Abstract

A method and apparatus for defining grid and proprietary addresses of selected locations within a geographical area are described, characterized in that the grid addresses are defined in relation to a grid and can be easily converted to global coordinates defined in relation to a known global referencing system, and the proprietary addresses are unique to the geographical area.

AMENDED CLAIMS

19. A navigational apparatus comprising: an input device for providing an address of a selected location within a geographical area, the address comprising a plurality of hierarchical codes appended to a first identifier; a storage device for storing data descriptive of a plurality of pre-defined grids, each of the grids corresponding to a geographical area and having (1) a plurality of cells; (2) an indentifier; (3) a reference location; (4) global coordinates of the reference location; and (5) at least one parameter defining cell size and orientation; and a processor configured to (1) select one of the plurality of grids, the selected grid having an identifier which matches the first identifier; and (2) determine the global coordinates of the selected location using no more than the data descriptive of the selected grid and the plurality of hierarchial codes.
20. In a computational apparatus, a method of addressing a selected location within a geographical area comprising the following steps: providing an address of a selected location within a geographical area, the address comprising a plurality of hierarchical codes appended to a first identifier; storing data descriptive of a plurality of pre-defined grids, each of the grids corresponding to a geographical area and having (1) a plurality of cells; (2) an identifier; (3) a reference location; (4) global coordinates of the reference location; and (5) at least one parameter defining cell size and orientation; selecting one of the plurality of grids, the selected grid having an identifier which matches the first identifier; and determining the global coordinates of the selected location using no more than the data descriptive of the selected grid and the plurality of hierarchial codes.

A navigational apparatus comprising: a GPS receiver for providing global coordinates of a first selected location; 44 an input device for providing an address of a second selected location within a geographical area, the address comprising a plurality of hierarchical codes appended to a first identifier; a storage device for storing data descriptive of a plurality of pre-defined grids, each of the grids corresponding to a geographical area and having (1) a plurality of cells; (2) an indentifier; (3) a reference location; (4) global coordinates of the reference location; and (5) at least one parameter defining cell size and orientation; a processor coupled to the GPS receiver and configured to (1) select one of the plurality of grids, the selected grid having an identifier which matches the first identifier; (2) determine the global coordinates of the second selected location using no more than the data descriptive of the selected grid and the plurality of hierarchial codes; and (3) determine a directional indicator by comparing the global coordinates of the first selected location with the global coordinates of the second selected location; and an output device coupled to the processor for outputting the directional indicator.

In a computational apparatus, a method of indicating a direction towards a desired location comprising the following steps: providing global coordinates of a first selected location; providing an address of a second selected location within a geographical area, the address comprising a plurality of hierarchical codes appended to a first identifier; storing data descriptive of a plurality of pre-defined grids, each of the grids corresponding to a geographical area and having (1) a plurality of cells; (2) an identifier; (3) a reference location; (4) global coordinates of the reference location; and (S) at least one parameter defining cell size and orientation; selecting one of the plurality of grids, the selected grid having an identifier which matches the first identifier; 45 determining the global coordinates of the second selected location using no more than the data descriptive of the selected grid and the plurality of hierarchial codes; determining a directional indicator by comparing the global coordinates of the first selected location with that of the second selected location; and outputting the directional indicator.
