Definitions
- the present invention relates to an absorbent product such as an incontinence pad, sanitary pad, diaper, or other absorbent garment, or absorbent inlay for such a garment, or the like, for absorbing bodily exudates as defined in the preamble of claim 1.
- the invention relates to disposable absorbent products which are especially designed for use as inconti- nence products, especially for use by adults, but also for use by children and more particularly incontinence products for feminine use.
- absorbent products of the above-mentioned type have an absorbent core surrounded by an envelope comprising a fluid impermeable sheet or layer commonly referred to as a backsheet, and a fluid permeable sheet or layer commonly referred to as a liner or topsheet.
- friction-increasing means such as one or more strips of pressure sensitive adhesive, are applied to the outer surface of the backsheet. The presence of the friction-increasing means helps to inhibit movement of the absorbent product with respect to the undergarment by frictional engagement therewith.
- release-paper In order to provide protection against the adhesive becoming dirty or sticking undesirably to other objects or clothing before use, it is known to provide a release-paper to cover said adhesive.
- the release paper When it is desired to use the product, the release paper is peeled away from the underlying adhesive and discarded, thus leaving the adhesive exposed for frictional engagement with the undergarment.
- the paper In order to facilitate peeling the release paper away from the adhesive, the paper is often treated with a release agent such as silicon.
- release paper is an element of the product which has to be discarded, often leading to such items accumulating on bathroom/toilet floors for example.
- the release paper once removed, has no further use in the absorption functioning of the product and thus the provision of such release paper is therefore clearly wasteful and adds to production costs.
- it has often been found difficult to grasp a non- attached portion of the release paper in order to peel it away from the rest of the product.
- the main object of the present invention is to obviate the use of release paper whilst still providing an effective barrier against direct contact with the adhesive before fitting the product inside the wearer's undergarment.
- the absorbent liner will be fitted in place inside a reusable external flexible chassis.
- a further object of the invention is to create a bowl or basin shape in the product when the product is to be used.
- the present invention provides a solution to the aforementioned objects by an absorbent product having the features defined in claim 1.
- Preferred features of the invention are defined in the dependent claims.
- the term "friction-increasing means" as used herein is intended to imply either a surface texture, or a formation on, or coating of, or treatment of, a sheet or layer which has the effect of increasing the resistance of the sheet (and thus the absorbent product) to movement with respect to a user's undergarment, or alterna- tively a liner chassis, when in contact therewith.
- a pressure-sensitive adhesive is a suitable example of such a friction-increasing means, although different types of adhesive or other sheet treatments will be apparent to a skilled man.
- width and length of the various components may be changed in order to suit the particular circumstances.
- width and length of the friction-increasing means for example may vary widely, although typically the width of bands of adhesive may vary between about 4 mm up to several centimetres.
- Fig. 1 is a plan view of an incontinence pad embodying the present invention, with the backsheet-side of the product shown uppermost.
- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line II-II in
- Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view corresponding to Fig. 2, in which the double pleat formation of Fig. 2 has been opened out so as to expose the friction- increasing means on the product and thereby also create a desired curvature in the product.
- Fig. 4 shows a cross-sectional view similar to Fig. 2, depicting an embodiment in which the position of the friction-increasing means has been divided into two portions and arranged on a different surface of the double pleat.
- Fig. 5 shows a view corresponding to Fig. 3, but relating to when the embodiment of Fig. 4 is opened out.
- Fig. 6 shows a cross-sectional view, similar to Fig. 2, but depicting an embodiment of the invention having a single pleat.
- Fig. 7 shows a cross-sectional view similar to Fig. 6, but employing a plurality of single pleats.
- Fig. 7a shows a partial view of a plurality of pleats of the type shown in Fig. 7, arranged in overlying relationship.
- Fig. 8 shows a cross-sectional view similar to Fig. 2, in which the pleat arrangement has been arranged to lie more towards the outside of the article.
- Fig. 9 shows a cross-sectional view similar to that in Fig. 6, but wherein the single pleat is arranged to lie more towards the outside of the product.
- Fig. 10 shows an alternative form of the product in Fig.
- each of said wings also being provided with a pleat formation such as for example of the type shown in Fig. 6.
- Fig. 11 shows a cross-sectional view of the product in Fig. 1 taken along line XI-XI and thus in an area of the product containing no absorbent core portion.
- Fig. 12 shows a still further embodiment of the invention, in which a plurality of pleats have been arranged to lie transversely with respect to the longitudinal direction of the product.
- the absorbent product 1 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 represents a typical shape of a feminine incontinence or sanitary pad.
- An absorbent core 2 shown in dashed lines has a similar but smaller outer periphery with respect to the backsheet 3 and the topsheet 4.
- the topsheet 4 is permeable to fluids/liquids whereas the backsheet 3 is impermeable to fluids/liquids, although the backsheet may be permeable to gases and water vapour for example.
- the nature of the materials which may be suitable for these sheets 3 and 4 and those of the absorbent core 2 are well known in the art and do not require further explanation here.
- the backsheet 3 should however preferably have good resistance to tearing and a material such as a polyethylene sheet would therefore be suitable.
- FIG. 1 depicts the cross- section of the sheets, in which the relationship of the dimensions of the various parts is not to scale, for reasons of clarity and that further layers (not shown) may be added between the topsheet and the backsheet if desired.
- a pleat arrangement denoted generally as 5 is preferably arranged to lie along the longitudinal axis of the product, said axis extending from the upper or front end to the lower end or rear end in Fig. 1. In Figs. 1 and 2, this pleat is arranged in the form of a double pleat and is arranged approximately symmetrically about the central longitudinal axis of the product.
- a friction-increasing material 9 such as a pressure-sensitive adhesive is coated on the outward facing portion 6 of the pleat 5.
- a coating of release means here depicted as a line of small dots.
- Such a coating could for example be silicon or a silicon- based coating which typically has a small affinity for the material 9 such that it can be pealed away therefrom without large force being applied.
- the friction-increasing means is generally applied as a continuous strip of material along the product (as indicated by Figs. 1 and 2 for example), the strip may be a series of intermittent areas or zones of friction- increasing material. Furthermore one or more of said zones may comprise distinct areas of friction-increasing material such as dotted areas arranged in particular patterns. This is particularly suitable in the context of adhesives, but is also applicable to other types of friction-increasing means. In this way it may be possible to reduce the cost of the friction-increasing material.
- the continu- ous strip shown in Fig. 2 might be divided into two or more spaced thinner strips running substantially parallel to one another.
- the pleat is so arranged that the portions 7 and 8 cover, or obscure, almost all of the friction- increasing material 9 from outside influence. If desired, the two portions may even completely obscure the material 9 by being in contact at their facing curved regions, or even by an overlapping arrangement .
- the sheets 3 and 4 are secured to each other, preferably all around their periphery.
- the absorbent core is preferably entirely or substantially entirely, separated from the areas of sealing, such that outward lateral movement of the backsheet will not cause tearing of the absorbent core. Outward lateral movement of the backsheet will be explained below.
- the periphery of the absorbent core in Fig. 2 is indicated by reference numerals 13 and 14.
- the core 2 may however be located within the seal area(s) at the front and/or rear end portions of the product (such an arrangement is not shown in the figures).
- the absorbent product When it is desired to use the absorbent product, the absorbent product may, if desired, be used in the unopened state shown in Fig. 2.
- the user may grip the outer longitudinal edges of the product and exert a lateral force on the backsheet in the direction of opposed arrows A and B.
- simultaneous rotational forces can be applied by the user in the directions C and D at either side of the product.
- the user may also grip the product inside the lateral edges at a location close to the pleats and then exert said forces C and D.
- the friction-increasing means 9 is arranged as two strips running longitudinally and preferably parallel in the product 1. Each of said strips 9 is arranged on a respective portion 7 , 8 of the pleat 5 arrangement. Opposed to these strips is at least one strip, or zone, of suitable release means (where this is required) preferably fixedly attached to a remaining portion, portion 6 in this case, of the backsheet.
- the absorbent product is opened out to produce a product with exposed friction- increasing means forming two strips 9 on either side of a central strip of release material (or on either side of a central region of an untreated backsheet if no release material is provided).
- Fig. 6 shows a further embodiment of the invention in which the pleat 5 is arranged as a single pleat having two integral portions 39 and 40. Friction-increasing means 9 have been applied to portion 40, but could equally have been applied to portion 39. By appropriate use of a friction-increasing means which has little affinity for itself, it would be possible to have said means 9 on facing surfaces of said pleat portions 39 and 40. No release means (in the previous embodiments denoted as 10) have been shown in this Figure. It is clear however that said release means, where used, would be applied appropriately to a surface opposite the friction-increasing means.
- Fig. 7 four pleats 41, 15, 16, 17 have been arranged to lie longitudinally along the article. It is clear however that any suitable number of pleats may be chosen according to the size of article in question.
- Each of the four pleat arrangements is represented as a single pleat, although double pleat arrangements may be used. No adhesive or release means has been depicted in this Figure, but said friction-increasing means is applied to at least one, of the internal facing surfaces of each pleat in a manner as described with regard to the single pleat arrangement of Fig. 6. Friction-increasing means may be omitted from one or more of the pleats, as long as it is present on at least one pleat.
- Fig. 7a which is a partial view of a backsheet having two pleats
- one or more pleats (such as pleats 41, 15, 16 and 17) may be arranged to overlie another of said pleats.
- two such pleats 18 and 19 each provided with friction-increasing means 9 are depicted in overlying relationship.
- a further embodiment is shown in which the pleat 5a arrangement is arranged as a double pleat with each of the pleat portions 7 and 8 lying in an alternative arrangement to that shown in Fig. 2. Additionally, as opposed to Fig. 2, friction-increasing means 9 is arranged in two separate strips on either side of the longitudinal axis of the product.
- Fig. 9 shows an embodiment with a single pleat which is similar to one side of the double pleat in Fig. 8.
- the upscaled thickness of the sheets 3 and 4, as well as the depth of the friction- increasing means 9 and release means 10 gives a somewhat distorted view of the product. It will however be clear that the pleat(s)5, 5a and means 9 and 10 will in fact only increase the depth of the article in the non drawn-out state by an amount equal to about a double backsheet thickness when in the flattened state.
- Fig. 10 shows an embodiment in which stabilising wings 22 and 23 have been integrated into the product of Fig. 1.
- Each of the wings is also provided with a pleat.
- a single pleat arrangement has been chosen, which may be the same as the pleat shown in Fig. 6 or Fig. 9 for example.
- Each of said pleats 20 and 21 runs substantially longitudinally in said article, although said pleats may be arranged to run transversely at angle of 90° or less.
- Fig. 11 shows a cross-sectional view along line XI-XI in
- Fig. 1 Section lines have been removed from the sheets in said Figure for reasons of clarity.
- the areas indicated by hatching correspond to the areas denoted by area 24 (and also areas 25 to 29 in other figures) and are intended to show that a heat seal, or other seal has been applied in these areas.
- This seal may be an additional seal to that normally used between the backsheet and the topsheet, or it may be the same seal 11, 12 (see e.g. Fig. 2) as applied between said two sheets to seal them together.
- a plurality of pleats 30, 31 and 32 are shown, each extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of said product 1.
- Each of said pleats may have a structure as shown in any of the previous embodiments, although double pleats have been depicted.
- each pleat is preferably sealed at its outer ends 33, 34; 35, 36; 37, 38, in peripheral portions of the product where the topsheet and backsheet are joined together (as explained previous- ly) «
- the product 1 is merely extended(as in the previous examples) by extending the backsheet of said product in the directions of the arrows E and F for example.
- a rotational force on the product may be applied to open the pleats.
- Zone G is intended to indicate an extension zone which would typically arise in said product when said pleats are opened in a normal manner, although the pleats 30, 31, 32 could of course be opened all the way along their length up to and/or including the outer seals if desired. Production of the products illustrated in the Figures would suitably occur in a direction which is in line with the length direction of the pleats.
- the arrangement of the invention can be used in removable absorbent inlays or inserts which are to be fitted to outer support structures for same.
- one of the two pleat portions may be shorter than the other.
- release means 10 When release means 10 is applied it will be located between one surface of the pleat and a portion of the remaining backsheet.
- the remaining portion of the backsheet may be a portion of the pleat itself (e.g. Fig. 6) or a portion which is not directly part of the pleat (e.g. Fig. 2).
- the release means could be provided by the material of the backsheet itself, although a careful balance of forces for opening the pleat(s) and not tearing during this process is required.
