Abstract

The invention relates to a method for using memory units in at least one electronic memory of various chip cards, comprising a semi-conductor chip, whereby the chip cards are linked to read/write terminals either without using contacts i.e. by means of electromagnetic alternating fields, or by using contacts, to exchange energy and data. CA type chip cards contain one or several programs (A...F). Electronic data (Bits) (DC) in the chip card memory is exchanged with electronic data (Bits) (DT) in TA type terminals. The programs (A...F) are used to exchange data and/or answer codes (DG) for financial operations between a terminal and A type chip card according to various methods (V1...Vn). An additional program (ZP) is available in type A cards, complementing existing programs (A...F). Said program carries out a data adjustment function whereby the data (DG) is converted into units (DZ) and the program (ZP) provides the cards with a new single method (VZ). Said method (VZ) enables the various other methods (V1...Vn) to be combined with the program (ZP) into a single method (VZ) which communicates in an identical, compatible and interoperable manner with all terminals containing programs for data exchange according to the single method (VZ).
