Abstract

A coal gas stream containing H2S and COS is desulphurised by passing it radially into a vessel (300), wherein the coal gas stream is entrained into a high momentum turbulent jet of gaseous zinc (308) passing downwardly through the vessel (300). The resultant desulphurised gas stream and solid zinc sulphide are separated in a hot gas cyclone (320). Any excess gaseous zinc is solidified by passing through a waste heat boiler (322) and is separated from the desulphurised gas stream by hot gas filtration.
