According to that document, preferred binders are polyvinyl alcohol, modified polyvinyl alcohol and in particular with carboxyl groups, acetoacetyl groups and silicone-modified polyvinyl alcohol. The mixture of these or other binders mentioned in this document with water-insoluble binders, such as. B. latices is not disclosed in this document. Suitable binders for the top layer include polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, starch and starch derivatives and copolymer emulsions of styrene-butadiene, vinyl acetate-ethylene, vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride-ethylene and methacrylate-butadiene. Precipitated calcium carbonate, ground calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, silicon dioxide anhydride, magnesium carbonate, zinc oxide, aluminum oxide and aluminum hydroxide in addition to organic pigments are mentioned as suitable pigments. With regard to a mixture of water-soluble and There is no disclosure of water-insoluble binders. A formulation containing 26% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol, in which precipitated calcium carbonate and zinc stearate are also present, is described by way of example.
In summary, the prior art discussed above can be interpreted to mean that, starting from water-soluble binders, in particular polyvinyl alcohol, in admixture with a pigment or filler, an attempt has been made to protect the heat-sensitive recording layers at least from mechanical influences and environmental influences. As far as water-insoluble binders are proposed, they are provided in a minor amount compared to the water-soluble ones. Although significant improvements in handling compared to heat-sensitive recording sheets without such protective layers have already been achieved with the protective layers known from the prior art, the results achieved so far are not always satisfactory.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a heat-sensitive recording sheet with a further improved protective layer, which can be used in particular in areas in which a much greater stress occurs than with the generally known use of facsimile paper, in particular as a label, price slip, receipt, invoice or ticket to be printed using thermal printing. In particular, an improved barrier property against fats, oils, alcohol and water is sought, with another aspect of the task being seen in improving the printability, especially after the wet offset process. Taken as a whole, the invention aims to provide a heat-sensitive recording material which, owing to the cover layer covering the recording layer, can be used in a wide variety of fields of application.
It was recognized that the desired goals can essentially be achieved by using a binder mixture in the top layer, which contains predominantly water-insoluble and to a lesser extent water-soluble binder and that - compared to the known protective layers - the proportion of the binder compared to the pigment content is increased. Based on this finding, the invention provides for a heat-sensitive recording sheet with a substrate, a heat-sensitive recording layer containing color formers and color acceptors and a pigment-containing protective layer formed on the recording layer and containing a mixture of water-soluble and water-insoluble binder, that the binder mixture, based on 100 parts by weight of the total weight of the protective layer, consists of 32 to 58 parts by weight of water-insoluble and 8 to 16 parts by weight of water-soluble binder,
The protective layer - based on its total weight - contains 12 to 20 parts by weight of pigment and
The protective layer contains less than 0.5 part by weight of pigment per part by weight of binder mixture, all details relating to parts by dry weight.
A particularly preferred embodiment provides a proportion of the water-insoluble binder component of 32 to 52 parts by weight, while the other components are unchanged in accordance with the embodiment described above.
The term used in the description and claims: "water-soluble binders" are to be understood as polymeric binders which are used as a solution, while "water-insoluble binders" are those which are present as latex / dispersion and form a film which can no longer be dissolved by water . Crosslinking aids are not included in the binders in the context of the present invention. In the context of the present invention, the specified protective layers can be applied to heat-sensitive recording layers which are applied directly to the substrate, e.g. B. are applied from paper, but they can be used according to a preferred embodiment in such heat-sensitive recording papers in which an intermediate layer is still arranged between the paper substrate and the heat-sensitive recording layer, which contains oil-absorbing pigment.
The recording sheets according to the invention have good resistance to mechanical influences, can be printed excellently in wet offset printing and are resistant to the influence of water and alcoholic solvents.
