Abstract

A dispensing container (12), such as a double-barrel cartridge used in dispensing dental material, matingly receives a sliding cap (14) that maintains a seal between material in the barrels (28, 30) and the atmosphere. The cap (14) includes a body (16) and a gasket (48) within the body (16), and the cap (14) also includes a cam portion (50) that shifts the body (16) slightly away from an outlet (36) of the container (12) as the cap (14) is moved toward a closed position to seal the container (12). Once the cap (14) is in a fully closed position, the cam portion (50) enables the body (16) to shift somewhat closer to the container outlet (36) in order to increase the compression of the gasket (48) between the body (16) and the outlet (36). Optionally, an orienting section (54) is provided for insuring that the cap (14) is coupled to the container (12) in only one certain orientation, so that the likelihood of cross-contamination of material within the barrels (28, 30) due to residual material on the gasket is substantially reduced.

Claims

2. The assembly (10) of claim 1, wherein said outlet (36) also includes a second outlet opening (40).
3. The assembly (10) of claim 1, wherein said cam portion (50) includes an apex (52) that is disengaged from said outer surface when said cap (14) is in said closed position.
4. The assembly (10) of claim 1 , wherein said outlet (36) also includes a second outlet opening (40) and wherein said gasket (48) includes a first closure portion (58) and a second closure portion (60), said cap (14) also including an orienting section (54) for substantially preventing said cap (14) from coupling to said container (12) in an orientation wherein said first closure portion (58) slides across said second outlet opening (40).
5. A dispensing container assembly (10) comprising: a dispensing container (12) having a protruding outlet (36) with an outlet opening (38) and an outer surface (42) surrounding said outlet opening (38); and a cap (14) for covering said outlet (36), said container (12) and said cap (14) each including releasable coupling structure (22, 44) for coupling said cap (14) to said container (12) as said cap (14) is moved in a direction across said outlet opening (38) toward a closed position, said cap (14) including a gasket (48) in compression against said outer surface (42) when said cap (14) is in said closed position, said cap (14) also including a cam portion (50) located next to said gasket (48), said cam portion (50) having an apex (52) for engagement with said outer surface (42) as said cap (14) is moved in a direction across said outlet opening (38), said apex (52) being disengaged from said outer surface (42) when said cap (14) is in said closed position in order to increase the compression of said gasket (48) against said outer surface (42) , wherein said releasable coupling structure of said cap (14) includes a pair of flange portions that extend outwardly in directions away from each other, and wherein said releasable coupling structure of said container includes a pair of ears (44) for engagement with said flange portions.
6. The assembly (10) of claim 5, wherein said outlet (36) includes a second outlet opening (40).
7. The assembly (10) of claim 5, wherein said cam portion (50) includes a pair of oppositely inclined ramp portions that join at said apex
8. The assembly (10) of claim 5, wherein said outlet (36) includes a second outlet opening (40), and wherein said cap (14) includes a first closure portion (58) and a second closure portion (60), and wherein at least one of said container (12) and said cap (14) includes an orienting section (54) for substantially preventing said cap (14) from coupling to said container (12) in an orientation wherein said first closure portion (58) slides across said second outlet opening (40).
9. A dispensing container assembly (10) comprising: a dispensing container (12) having a first chamber and a second chamber, said container (12) including a first outlet opening (38) in communication with said first chamber and a second outlet opening (40) in communication with said second chamber, said first outlet opening (38) located adjacent said second outlet opening (40); and a cap (14) for covering said first outlet opening (38) and said second outlet opening (40), said container (12) and said cap (14) each including releasable coupling structure (22, 44) for coupling said cap (14) to said container (12) as said cap (14) is slidably moved in a direction across said first outlet opening (38) and said second outlet opening (40) toward a closed position, said cap (14) having a first closure portion (58) and a second closure portion (60) for closing said first outlet opening (38) and said second outlet opening (40) respectively, at least one of said container (12) and said cap (14) including an orienting section (54) for substantially preventing said cap (14) from coupling to said container (12) in an orientation wherein said first closure portion (58) slides across said second outlet opening (40).
