Abstract

An improved abrasive blasting head includes a housing (12), having one or more pressurized gas inlets (26) for permitting entry of a pressurized gas (27) into the interior of the housing (12), the housing (12) further having an outlet (24); and nozzle apparatus (32, 34, 36) arranged in the housing (12), wherein the nozzle apparatus includes an inlet (40) for a liquid-abrasive suspension (31), a central passage (38) for permitting throughflow of a stream of liquid-abrasive suspension (31), the central passage (38) xtending between the inlet (40) and an outlet (42) arranged in coaxial registration with the housing outlet (24), apparatus for permitting entry of the pressurized gas (27) from the interior of the housing (12) into the central passage (38) of the nozzle apparatus (32, 34, 36) at high velocity, thereby to draw the liquid-abrasive suspension (31) therethrough in the form of a stream, including apparatus (64, 86) or providing an annular gas cushion between the stream and the nozzle apparatus (32, 34, 36), thereby to prevent substantial abrasive wear of the nozzle apparatus (32, 34, 36) by the liquid-abrasive stream (31).
