Definitions
- This invention relates to plastic "pilfer-proof" screw-on bottle caps and in particular plastic bottle caps which have a ring which is totally or partially separable from the cap, as an indication of tampering.
- Plastic bottle tops While considerably more economical to manufacture and use, compared to metal caps, nonetheless provide unique problems which result from limitations in molding and forming. Whereas metal caps can be formed directly on the bottles into a shape requiring destructive and tamper evident removal, plastic caps are typically molded, into form, separately before being placed on the bottles. As a result, the cap seating procedure can, by diligent tampering, be reversed without evidence of such reversal.
- plastic cap configurations with tamper evident "pilfer-proofs" have been utilized to minimize the ability to reverse the seating procedures without evidence of tampering.
- the ring section has inwardly extending molded hooks, circumferentially positioned at the edge of the ring section distal to the cap.
- the hooks are caused to collapse and fold outwardly into a recess, by being cammed by a radially extending bead of the bottle thereby permitting them to pass the bead.
- the free ends of the hook pass the bead, they spring back to engage the lower surface of the bead, thereby preventing upward movement of the ring together with removal of the bottle cap.
- the frangible bridges break under continued removal forces, i.e., unscrewing of the cap, thereby causing the ring to become detached as an indication of tampering.
- caps In the construction of certain caps it may be desirable to form the caps of a relatively softer and more easily stretchable material than polypropylene or nylon, such as polyethylene.
- a sealable material such as polyethylene is utilized.
- advantages of using polyethylene are accompanied by the drawback of softer hooks which are more readily disengaged. Because of the relative elasticity of the polyethylene cap material it may be possible for a dexterous tamperer to cause disengagement between the hooks and the bottle bead by first tightening the cap on the bottle to disengage the hooks from contact with the bead.
- the lower end of the ring, at the point of attachment to the hooks, is carefully squeezed inwardly and slightly upwardly. Since the material is relatively more stretchable, the hooks can be more readily made to swivel outwardly away from the edge of the bead.
- the cap can then be slipped off the bottle, with the hooks sliding past the edge of the bead, without formation of the tell-tale separated ring.
- materials such as polyethylene or even thinned polypropylene, disengagement of the hooks from the bead is also possible even spontaneously as a result of the ring of the pilfer proof being susceptible to stretching and outward expansion, under heated conditions and even aggressive squeezed opening of the bottle.
- Figure 1 is a cross section view of the cap of the present invention showing the retaining hooks in relative position to a bottle upon which it is being placed;
- Figure 2 is an expanded view of area A of Figure 1, showing the hook and the relative positioning of the circumferential band;
- Figure 3 is a bottom view of the cap showing the open end of the cap and the peripherally surrounding hooks and circumferential band of Figure 1 and 2.
- Figure 4 is a second embodiment of the present invention showing an interrupted circumferential band;
- Figure 5 is a cross section view of a prior art cap in the process of being removed, with the cap being canted and with failure to break all the bridges; and Figure 6 shows a cross section view of the cap of the present invention being similarly removed, with substantially reduced incidence of canting and with breakage of all the bridges.
- the present invention comprises a plastic pilfer-proof cap for a bottle having a screw thread adjacent its open end and a circumferential retaining bead below the screw thread, away from the open end of the bottle.
- the cap is comprised of a cap section having an open end adapted to be threaded on the screw thread of the bottle, and a ring section attached to the open end of the cap section by one or more frangible bridges therebetween.
- the ring section (or pilfer proof indicator) has a plurality of circumferentially placed hook elements having free ends which extend inwardly and upwardly. The hook elements are integrally molded with the ring section at the edge of the ring section distal from the bridge portion.
- the ends of the hook elements which are integrated with the ring section, function as hinges whereby the hook elements are adapted to hingedly move to adjacently pass over the screw thread and retaining bead of the bottle when the cap is initially threaded on the bottle.
- the free ends of the hook elements are further adapted to engage a lower peripheral surface of the retaining bead, whereby unscrewing of the cap from the bottle causes the one or more frangible bridges to break.
- a separately definable circumferential reinforcing band is positioned peripherally around the exterior of the ring section, at the edge of the ring section distal from the bridge portion, and in concentric registration with the hinges of the hook elements.
- the reinforcing band is integrated with the ring section, with a first portion of the band extending below the level of the hinges (beyond the edge of the ring, if the hinges depend directly from the lower edge of the ring) and with a second portion of the band being integrated with the exterior of the ring section and extending from the level of the hinges, on the ring section for a distance at least half the vertical height of the hook element adjacent thereto and up to about the full vertical height of the hook element adjacent thereto.
- the circumferential band provides resistance or hoop forces sufficient to maintain said hooks against the retaining bead.
- the adjacent section of the ring section is thickened relative to the remaining portions of the ring section, such structures are relatively ineffective in preventing detrimental outward expansion and disengagement of the hooks from the bottle bead.
- a band as in the present invention, with its positioning relative to the hinges of the hook and the height of the hook itself, there is a tendency for the ring section to distally swivel outwardly (pivoting on the adjacent non-thickened portion) which permits hook disengagement.
- the give of the hooks absent the reinforcement band of the present invention, permits the ring section to slide inward, underneath the bottle bead, to at least partially relieve bridge breaking pressure on the bridges diagonally opposite thereto causing bridge breakage failure.
- the separately definable band is preferably solid to provide maximum hoop strength reinforcement but adequate reinforcement, though not of a hoop strength reinforcing nature and degree, may also be obtained with a band having interruptions.
- the thickness of the integrated reinforcement band relative to the thickness of ring section, upon which the hooks are dependent is generally determined to be dependent upon the elasticity of the material being used. Thus, for thicker ring sections and with less elastic materials such as nylon and polypropylene, the band may be thinner and for thinner ring sections and more elastic materials such as polyethylene the band should be thicker.
- the thickness of the reinforcing band is at least 25% of the thickness of the adjacent ring section in order to minimally effectively prevent stretching disengagement of the hooks from a bottle bead and/or canting with bridge breakage pressure relief.
- the width of the band should be sufficient to peripherally be concentrically adjacent a substantial (at least half and more preferably 75%) , if not complete, vertical height of the adjacent hook.
- the band should also extend beyond the base of the hook (or hinge) , at the peripheral edge of the ring section, preferably for a distance at least one quarter that of the vertical height of the adjacent hook.
- a bottle cap generally designated as 10, is shown with threads 11, adapted for screw-on engagement with threads 21 of bottle top 20.
- eight hooks 12a-h extend inwardly from the distal end of pilfer proof ring section 10a.
- the pilfer proof ring section 10a is attached to cap section 10b by integrally molded frangible bridges 10c.
- circumferential band 30 completely circumferentially encloses the end of the ring section 10a, at the points where the hooks 12a-h are supportingly extending.
- Band 30 is separately defined from ring section 10a, though integrated therewith, and lies outside of the plane of the ring section 10a.
- segment 30a of band 30 extends beyond the unattached periphery of the ring section 10a in the form of a cantilevered hoop.
- Segment 30b of band 30, integrated with ring section 10a is adjacently opposite a substantial portion of the height of the adjacent hooks 12a-h.
- band 30' With interruptions 31, provides a similar resistance against the moving the hooks away from engagement with bottle bead 22, but of a lesser extent as compared to the full hoop strength resistance of band 30 in Figures 1-3.
- the effects of screw cap removal as shown in Figure 5, with respect to the prior art cap 10', are also negated with the reinforcing band of the present invention. As shown, the
