Definitions
- Subject of the invention is the face-mask of a doll's head and the method of producing it.
- Doll heads and their silhouettes are carved from eg. wood, formed from paper pulp, plastic, porcelain or blown out from PCV (vinydur) with steelon, forced eg. from celluloid or swen from textile (flat-face dolls).
- the dolls masks are hand-painted or embellished by means of a spray-gun or stamps.
- Hand painting by using a brush, writing pen or nib requires much time, thus being not profitable.
- the method of spraying fast-drying nitrocellulose lacquers is used with the aid of spray- guns and patterns.
- the said patterns are made on a mask of the same shape what the one subject to spraying is. So many colours, so many patterns.
- small elements of a doll's head face- mask are hand-painted. Colours on cheeks are sprayed on all the masks by means of a spray-gun.
- the afore-mentioned procedure of embellishing the doll's masks is applied eg. for those made of celluloid.
- a technique frequently used in a series production of dolls' face-mask is stamping.
- stamps are of a different shape, depending on a dimension and shape of an element.
- a nail-head may also be used as a stamp.
- the pins with a wooden handle are used for lighting the eyes and making nostrils.
- the stamps for lips, the whites and big round-shaped elements are made of sheet zinc soldered to long nails where the head is cut.
- the stamps should be a little bit smaller than the element being stamped as during pressing the stamp a paint may cover the element by more than it needs to be.
- the condition for a stamping technique to be successful is preparation of a nitro-cellulose lacquer properly.
- Lashes, eyebrows and other lines are made by means of a pen or nibs with the use of nitro- cellulose lacquer.
- the said lacquers are appropriate for embellishing the celluloid masks.
- Commonly used masks made of inflammable foil (PCV - vinydur) with steelon are decorated with a lacquer of a special recipe. Nitro-cellulose lacquers are not applicable in this case.
- the masks of inflammable plastic Prior to embellishing, the masks of inflammable plastic should be cleaned thoroughly as the lacquer used for embellishing is susceptible to any grease.
- the faces printed on cloth are applied. There are numerous methods of such a printing. One of them is stamp printing. The wooden or metal stamps sre fixed to wooden boards.
- the printing paint is contained in an elastic soft pillow on which the stamp is manually pressed and impressed on stuff.
- a separate stamp should be used for each colour.
- the stuff is stretched on a printing bench which is covered with blanket and a special printing washer protecting the blanket against getting dirty.
- the stamp printing allows for applying small and precise forms and thin lines.
- the afore-mentioned technique requires from a printer high skills, uniform pressure, the output being not large.
- Another method is a spray printing which consists in coating the stuff by means of a spray-gun. Respective fragments of a pattern in several colours are cut out from sheet zinc. The said printing does not make it possible to apply thin lines due to a difficulty with making the pattern.
- a technique of screen printing is used. It consists in placing the pattern on the stuff by means of the so called mould, ie. screen painted with lacquer in some spots. The printing paint is forced through uncovered spots of the screen. The stuff is attached to the printing bench and remains immobilised during the process of printing.
- the flesh-coloured linen is applied; it should be well ironed.
- white linen is used.
- cheeks are sprayed by a spray-gun without using a mould.
- the face design shall not be complicated; as many as only four colours may be used. Irises should be blue, the eye lines, lashes and eyebrows - black or brown, mouth - red.
- the abrasion resistant paints should be used; they should be well-adhesive to the stuff so that the printed pattern is not abrasive and easy to crumble.
- the masks printed on the linen are used for the flat-face dolls.
- a commonly used pattern of a doll is that printed on the linen as a left and right side thereof which put together with one seam are stuffed with sawdust, small rags or sponge. It is an American attempt of the year 1920 to produce the whole silhouette by means of a printing method.
- a patent description No. 16550 shows a method of producing the celluloid dolls' and animals' heads resembling natural living creatures.
- celluloid is partly or entirely transparent and embellishing proceeds by coating the internal area with a layer of proper paints.
- a doll with a face-mask made of celluloid, formed by preserving a design of an human face and coated with stuff is also popular.
- the mask of such a doll is hand-painted.
- the present invention is aimed at working out cuch a way to create a doll's face-mask that it would resemble a selected archetype - an human face, and might be used in a series production of dolls' face- masks with respect to clients' individual needs.
- the method to create a doll's face-mask to be formed similar to a man's face requires a photographic, cinema and computer technique as well as a technique of a photographic transfer of a man's face to flat stretchy material.
- the said method is characterized by taking a vibrant photo of a completely revealed man's face which is well illuminated and shot en face on a bright background. Afterwards, thus obtained image of a man's face is subject to retouching.
- a photographic picture of a man's face is corrected as regards the proportion of a doll's head face-mask and then, it is transferred on flat transparent material.
- Next step is to transfer a corrected photographic image of man's face onto flat stretchy material which is adjusted to be placed on doll's face-mask.
- a corrected photographic image of a man's face transmitted on flat stretchy material is put on the doll's face-mask so that correspondence of both the faces is observed and the proportion of a doll's head face-mask is maintained. Then, it is connected with the doll's face-mask, best by sticking it thereto.
- the doll's face-mask formed by observing an human face is characterized in this invention by coating it with a layer of flat stretchy material with a corrected photographic image of a completely revealed man's face thereon with respect to the correspondence of features of both the faces and proportion of a doll's head face-mask.
- the said layer is fast connected with a doll's head face-mask preserving shape.
- the corrected photographic image of a completely revealed man's face is made with respect to the proportion of a doll's head face-mask.
- the way of creating the face- mask of doll's head and the mask itself show a lot of advantages in relation to the hitherto used methods of forming the masks.
- the method is profitable by using the hitherto exisitng, modern and easily operated appliances such as: a miniature camera, film camera, computer, the equipment for various polygraphic techniques applied for a new purpose of creating a doll's face-mask without any changes in that equipment. Consequently, a new appearance of the doll's head face-mask is obtained being a new quality.
- the doll's head face-mask shaped by using this invention shows similarity to a chosen human face adding to a doll's face a tint of "refreshment".
- the face of a doll to be formed in a series production as per this invention will not be a standard-like.
- a doll may have a face of any person with respect to its personal features. All of this to make a doll - which plays an important didactic role, ie. teaches individuality, variety, love to it itself and to others - close to a man's archetype.
- Subject of the invention is shown in a drawing which presents the doll's head face-mask coated by flat stretchy material with a corrected photographic image of a completely revealed man's face-mask placed thereon.
- the mask III of the doll's head face-mask formed with respect to the features of a man's face, made of PCV is coated by a layer 111 of a flat stretchy material with a corrected photographic image of completely revealed man's face placed thereon with respect to the correspondence of the features of both the faces and proportion of the doll's head face-mask III.
- the layer 111 of flat stretchy material is that of knitted fabric - cotton.
- Layer 111 is sticked to the mask III of a doll's head face-mask preserving shape.
- a corrected photographic image of a completely revealed man's face gives consideration to the propotion of a doll's head face-mask III.
- the method provides for textiles, knitted fabric and foil to be used as stretchy material.
- Stretchy material means the material which is characterized by plastic stretching under the action of tensile force. It is sufficient for stretchy material applicable in the foregoing method to be susceptible to little deformation as during the process of shaping the doll's head face-mask III large deformation does not occur.
- Flat stretchy materialused in this invention is characterized by elasticity. In normal conditions of ambient temperature, textiles and knitted fabric show elasticity whereas foil does not. Thereof, foil requires to be adjusted prior to placing it on the doll's head face-mask III by heating it in the heating equipment up to appropriate temperature.
- Example I One should make by a camera a beautiful photo of a completely revealed man's face, well illuminated, shot en face on the light background. Afterwards, the photographic image of a man's face is subject to computer retouching. Retouching is to correct a technical quality of a photographic picture and to change an artistic image as required. Then, by using a computer technique, a photographic image of a retouched man's face is corrected as regards the proportion of the doll's head face-mask III, especially as regards its horizontal dimensions. The photographic image of a man's face thus corrected is transferred onto the flat transparent material with the use of an appropriate printer which co-operates with a computer.
- the corrected photographic image of selected man's face is printed by way of screen process on knitted fabric to be placed on the doll's head face-mask without any need to adjust it.
- the doll's head face- mask III formed with respect to man's face features, made of PCV and preserving shape, is coated by knitted fabric with a corrected photographic image of a man's face formerly transferred thereon.
- the correspondence of features of both the faces as well as the proportion of doll's head face-mask III is maintained.
- the corrected photographic picture of man's face on layer 111 of knitted fabric is sticked with glue to the face-mask 1 of the doll's head face-mask.
- the other way to create the doll's head face-mask III as per the invention is based on using the flat stretchy material such as eg. soft and plastified foil of polyvinyl chloride.
- Example II A sparkling picture of a selected man's face is made by a film camera. The face should be completely revealed, well illuminated and shot en face on the light background. Thus created photographic image of a man's face is subject to computer retouching. Afterwards, by using a computer technique, the retouched photographic image of man's face is corrected to preserve the proportion of the doll's head face-mask III. In particular with respect to horizontal dimensions.
- the corrected photographic image of a man's face is transferred onto the flat transparent and stretchy material, ie. soft, plastified and self-adhesive foil of polyvinyl chloride.
- the said foil should be applied directly on the doll's head face-mask III.
- a self- adhesive layer allows for forming the polyvinyl chloride foil on smooth surface.
- it should be adjusted.
- the foil with the man's face image formerly transferred thereon to be elastic it should be placed in the heating equipment with temperature of ca 90° to 100° C.
- the doll's head face-mask III formed with respect to preserve the man's face features, made of PCV and keeping up the shape is coated with the soft self-adhesive and plastified and plastified plyvinyl chloride foil with the corrected photographic image of a man's face transferred formerly thereon.
- the foil should be heated insofar as it preserves the correspondence of features of both the faces as well as the proportion of the doll's head face-mask III.
- the heated foil being layer 111 of the flat stretchy material is placed on the doll's head face-mask III and the venting holes are made therein. The foil is sticked to the doll's head face-mask with the use of glue.
- the doll's head face-mask III is coated with layer 111 of the polyvinyl chloride foil with the corrected photographic image of a completely revealed man's face formerly transferred thereon.
- the method described is Example I may be used in a series production whereas the method mentioned in Example II may be applied in a production as per an individual order. n
