Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a device for retaining support nails that primarily in fractured bones are introduced through an orifice in the leg into a position where they are extended past the fracture in order to support the pieces of bone in proper positions during the healing period.
  • Support nails of the present type which typically are so called “hacketal-nails", are introduced into a fractured bone through an orifice formed in the bone and are struck or otherwise forced through the bone marrow so they extend themselves past the broken area.
  • Such nails have an entirely supporting function, so that the bone during healing will maintain a shape as close as possible to the original shape.
  • the purpose of these nails is to prevent the bone from receiving an angular deviation in the fracture during the healing.
  • a problem with the use of such support nails is that during the healing of the fracture they at times tend to migrate back out of the orifice in the bone from which they where introduced. After the operation, during which the orifice for introducing the support nails has been opened and the support nails have been inserted in place, the skin is joined by stitching over this orifice. When the skin is healed it is then most irritating for the patient when one or more of the support nails begins to find their way out through the skin, especially as this can lead to wounds and inflammations.
  • the support nails need to be introduced from the side of the bone and then bent along with the bone and past the area of the fracture. After the introduction the nails must be present adjacent to the orifice so that they may be easily accessed during the future pulling out, and may accordingly not be introduced too far into the bone. At the same time they may not be too long so that they protrude out from the bone and may irritate the skin, as been described earlier, but they should preferably end within the wall thickness of the bone marrow. Since this relates to living tissue with its special properties it is, however, difficult to provide these nails with well adapted length since they may penetrate deeper than expected in some cases and shorter than expected in other cases.
  • the object of the present invention is to eliminate the problem mentioned above. This object is reached with a device according to the claims, wherein further the specific features of the invention are evident.
  • Figure 1 is a partly sectioned view of a fractured bone with support nails introduced past the broken area and retained in place with a device according to the invention
  • Figure 2 is a radial projection of a device according to the invention.
  • Fig. 1 shows a bone 1 having a fracture 2.
  • an orifice 3 that has been formed through the wall of the shaft of the bone into its marrow, a number of support nails 5 have been introduced through the bone 1 from the orifice 3 and a distance past the fracture 2. In some cases only one support nail 5 is utilized and in other cases several. That far the technique is conventional.
  • a retaining device 6 is screwed through the orifice 3 and into the marrow 4.
  • This device 6 is essentially tube shaped in such a way that the end portions of support nails 5 can be accommodated therein. Further, since it is flexible it can follow the nails 5 in their turning from the orifice 3.
  • a retaining device 6 which in this preferred embodiment is formed in the shape of a cylindrical coil, similar to a tension spring. One end is open, through which support nail or nails 5 are inserted, while the other is closed so that support nails 5 cannot protrude through the device 6, but only into it.
  • the closure is made by bending a part of the outer turn of the coil over the end opening.
  • This embodiment of enclosure provides, in addition to its ability to act as a stop for the nails 5, a grip for the tool with which the retaining device 6 will be screwed into a bone 1.
  • the turns of the coil are relatively thinly spaced and the radially outwardly directed portions have preferably cross sections that are sharpened or provided with an edge formed ridge.
  • the turns of the coil form a somewhat flexible tap that during the screwing into a bone 1 aids the retaining device 6 to cut its own tap in the bone 1 as well as in the marrow 4. There are, however, no obstacles against cutting a thread into the wall of the orifice 3 using a special tool, if this is necessary.
  • a tube shaped sleeve e. g. similar to a cartridge, can be threaded on the ends and then be inserted in the retaining device 6. This sleeve is prevented from forcing its way out of the retaining device with help of e. g. the bent outer turn of the coil as mentioned earlier.
  • the retaining device 6 is made of a material that in no way affects or is affected by the living tissue in the bone 1. Thus, suitable materials are certain metals and plastics. At the same time, the retaining device 6 is so flexible that it can be somewhat bent during the screwing into the bone 1 and thereby follow the turn of the support nails, so that these are not urged out of the position of introduction when the retaining device 6 is screwed into the bone 1.
  • Utilizing the coil shape gives an easy production, thereby contributing to a low cost for this, of a retaining device according to the invention, and does further give the necessary flexibility which is required on one hand to follow the bend of the support nails and on the other hand to adapt to a living tissue.
