Definitions
- the present invention relates to an inert magnesian support based on sepiolite and to compositions containing such a support, in particular for preserving perishable materials in an environment. It also relates to processes for the preparation of such a support and of such a composition, as well as to the use of these, in particular for the preservation of perishable materials.
- Sepiolite is a natural hydrated magnesium silicate, which belongs to the group of clays.
- the particular structure of this material makes it an inert porous support having a specific surface advantageous for the absorption and adsorption of other products.
- EP-A-0515764 describes a composition for controlling the ripening process of fruits and the like, which comprises a support based on sepiolite and, as oxidizing substances, potassium permanate and sodium periodate.
- the composition is in the form of extruded products with a diameter of 2 to 3 mm and a length of 3 to 5 mm.
- the present invention aims to develop an inert magnesian support based on sepiolite with significantly improved absorbency.
- a magnesian support based on sepiolite which has an increased pore volume by sequestration of a large portion of its magnesium ions by an appropriate complexing agent.
- this complexing agent for sequestering Mg ions is ethylene diaminotetraacetic acid (EDTA) or one of its salts, in particular its disodium salt.
- the approved complexing agent used forms very stable complexes with various divalent cations, and in particular Mg ++ .
- Mg ++ is a chelating ligand which has 6 donor atoms in its structure and which therefore forms very stable complexes. It makes it possible to divert a large quantity of Mg ions from the structure of the sepiolite and thus to free the openings of the intercrystalline channels thereof, which greatly promotes its absorbency.
- the invention also aims a composition for preserving perishable materials in an environment, this composition being based on a sepiolite capable of supporting at least one active substance which reacts with one or more compounds present in said environment. a way favorable to a conservation of these perishable materials.
- such a composition comprising for preserving perishable materials in an environment, comprising a support sepiolite having a pore volume increased by sequestration of a large part of its magnesium ions by a complexing agent appropriate.
- the complexing agent for sequestering magnesium ions is ethylene diamino acid. tetraacetic acid or one of its salts, in particular its disodium salt.
- the composition according to the invention is capable of absorbing more active substance (s) for preservation, and possibly of desorbing more products favorable for the preservation of said perishable materials.
- perishable materials products which degrade over time, and which themselves emit volatile compounds, sometimes with an unpleasant odor. Mention may be made, as perishable materials, of all food products, such as those of animal origin, such as seafood, fish, meat, and similar materials, or those of vegetable origin, such as products agricultural or horticultural, especially fruits and vegetables. Mention may also be made of non-perishable perishable materials, for example cut flowers, or household or industrial waste. These perishable materials undergo, depending on their nature, different types of degradation, for example a phenomenon of melanosis or blackening. During a biochemical process, nitrogen compounds are generated which contribute to increasing the microbial flora favoring the degradation of certain materials. There is also in some cases an alteration of the color such as browning or discoloration, rancidity, the appearance of unpleasant odors, etc.
- compositions which are sprinkled on fish or meat or in which the food to be preserved is immersed.
- these compositions have the disadvantage that they put food in direct contact with active substances which are not necessarily favorable for the health of consumers.
- compositions are also known which are not in direct contact with food, and which are therefore not mass additives.
- the compositions according to the invention are particularly improved compositions from this latter category of compositions intended for preservation.
- said at least one active substance supported on the sepiolite comprises non-volatile inorganic salts, capable of degrading by oxidation one or more volatile compounds present in said environment, in particular materials Short-chain organics emitted from perishable materials to be stored, in particular ethylene, acetaldehyde, carboxylic acids, amines, ketones, aldehydes, and the like.
- This type of composition according to the invention is particularly advantageous for oxidizing the volatile compounds present in a preservation enclosure, that is to say those which trigger the degradation phenomena to be avoided or which give off unpleasant odors or flavors.
- said at least one active substance comprises one or more reducing inorganic salts or acids.
- a release of SO 2 in the storage enclosure can prove to be very advantageous, as an enzyme inhibitor in darkening phenomena and as an agent preventing browning reactions.
- this compound exerts a strong antimicrobial action since it is capable of causing attacks at points distinct from the enzymatic structure of the cells. It is active against fungi and yeasts and it can prevent the destruction of vitamin C from food.
- Other embodiments of the compositions according to the invention appear in particular from claims 3 to 12.
- a subject of the invention is also a process for preparing an inert magnesian support based on sepiolite.
- This treatment includes a sequestration of a large part of the magnesium ions of sepiolite by a corneal agent.
- suitable plexing agent may include washing the sepiolite with a solution in water of ethylene diaminotetraacet acid or of a salt thereof, in particular its disodium salt.
- the invention also aims to prepare a composition for preserving perishable materials in an environment.
- the present invention also relates to the use of a preservation composition according to the invention for conservation of perishable materials in an environment, alone, jointly or successively with one or more other preservation compositions according to the invention.
- Sepiolite is a hydrated magnesium silicate, extracted from mines located in particular in Spain.
- Sepiolite is fibrous and is formed of talc-like structures with two layers of tetrahedral units of silica united to an octahedral layer of magnesium by oxygen atoms.
- This particular structure provides intercrystalline channels of longitudinal direction, through which many types of fluid can penetrate, hence the advantage of this support for different types of application requiring absorption of such fluids.
- the sepiolite is washed with water in proportions of 1/1.
- Each liter of water was, in this example, previously treated with 0.1 ml of HNO, IN, so as to establish a pH of 4.
- This pH prevents, during the washing, a precipitation of the Mg of the octahedral layers sepiolite in the form of Mg (OH) 2 , which is one of the main parasitic reactions to be avoided, as described previously.
- the washing must be done quickly, constantly shaking the mass at 2,000 rpm, then the remaining liquid is filtered when the sepiolite has been impregnated.
- the washed and filtered sepiolite is dried. During drying, water entrains the added HN0 3 and the sepiolite returns to its natural pH.
- an appropriate complexing agent dissolved in water is added to the sepiolite.
- 0.1M YH 2 Na 2 which is the disodium salt of ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid, is used as complexing agent.
- the sepiolite is washed with this solution containing 37.22 g of complexing agent per liter of water so as to again obtain a water-sepiolite proportion of 1/1.
- the pH to be applied during this second washing is advantageously 6.5. It is actually a compromise pH.
- HN0 3 in the first wash was chosen for pH stabilization. It has the advantage that it is an inorganic acid without problem of compatibility with inorganic salts to be added later. It is a strong acid and the quantity to be added is therefore low and its ions leave no residue in the sepiolite.
- oxidizing agents in this example consist of 3 non-volatile mineral salts and hydrogen peroxide.
- the 3 mineral salts are:
- dichromate in particular of sodium, potassium or ammonium
- Hydrogen peroxide is an amphoterous reagent which here has a double function, providing an adequate medium to produce oxidation and acting favorably on the dichromate, allowing its oxidation when it is already reduced.
- oxidizing agents are added to water, into which hydrogen peroxide has previously been introduced.
- the dissolution must be complete, then the sepiolite is impregnated, for example that obtained in Example 1.
- the impregnation is carried out in a mixer.
- composition for example: Water 25-30%
- the diameter of the extrusion products is between 2.5 and 3.5 mm to present the maximum absorption properties.
- a dryer can be used with a nominal heat potential of 140,600 W and a nominal cooling potential of 116,200 W, with a dehydration capacity of 65 l / h.
- Drying begins at the temperature at which the product is at the exit of the extrusion, i.e. around 30 ° C. From this initial temperature, the temperature is increased by 10 ° C per hour until complete drying which is obtained after 5 to 9 hours.
- the product is then stabilized for 24 hours away from daylight, then it is packaged.
- the packaging is carried out in sachets, industrial filters or household filters.
- material for the sachet it is possible, for example, to use a non-woven textile, called "TYVEK" and placed on the market by the firm DuPont de Nemours.
- TYVEK non-woven textile
- Such a bag allows gas exchange, being impermeable to liquids.
- the filters can be microporous or microperforated containers, for example made of high density polyethylene, which are adapted to be placed in particular at the air inlet of the cold room evaporators.
- aqueous impregnation solution containing reducing agents is produced.
- these reducing agents consist of two mineral salts and two acids:
- S 2 0 5 2 "+ H 2 0> HSO, " + S0 2 + OH "
- S0 2 has a favorable effect as an enzyme inhibitor and as an antioxidant.
- the two acids act as acidulants and and antioxidants, while NaCl for example forms a pH regulating solution which optimizes the release of SO 2 .
- the sepiolite is impregnated with the aqueous solution formed, in a kneader, and the following composition is obtained:
- Citric acid 0-3%
- the pasty material obtained is then extruded, dried and packaged as described in Example 2.
- composition according to the invention for the conservation of flowers. Tests are carried out with carnations of the "Light pink Tasman" variety. The flowers are stored dry at 20 ° C in 70 l stainless containers for 6 days. The storage chamber is opened every 3 days to restore normal air conditions.
- Control O without composition according to the invention.
- Lot 1 composition according to the invention in accordance with Example 2.
- Control - injection of 0.1 ppm of ethylene into the chamber at the start of the test, without composition according to the invention.
- composition according to the invention increases the useful life of the flowers and eliminates the ethylene, both that produced by the flowers and that introduced at the start of the test.
- a preservation test was carried out with prawns in the presence (lot 1) or in the absence (lot 0) of a composition according to Example 2.
- TMA trimethylamine
- OTMA trimethylamine oxide
- TVBN nitrogen bases
- a preservation test is carried out with meat in the presence (batch 1) or in the absence (batch 0) of a composition according to Example 2.
- batch 0 presents visible evidence that it is no longer suitable for consumption: appearance of acidity, loss of red color, appearance of exudation liquid and strong lactic odor.
- batch 1 On the seventh day, batch 1 still has an aspect allowing its consumption: the meat is red, there is no acidity, no exudation liquid, no lactic odor.
- Example 7
- Crustaceans normally undergo an irreversible change in color during their conservation. Volatile compounds, in particular hydrocarbons, are also released into the storage atmosphere.
