Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the seaming of two ends of a papermakers fabric.
  • the present invention has particular, but not exclusive, application to the seaming of two ends of a dryer fabric.
  • Papermakers fabrics such as dryer fabrics, may be from two to ten metres wide and from fifteen to over a hundred metres long and the making of a satisfactory seam quickly and easily is essential for the efficient operation of a dryer.
  • European patent application EP 0441412A describes a flat woven dryer felt made endless by interdigitating loop formations, each formed as continuous helices, provided at the respective fabric ends and inserting a pintle wire into the tunnel formed by and between said formations.
  • This seam comprising the two helices and pintle wire, is the most common area of failure for a dryer fabric.
  • the helices have on average one thousand loops per metre of seam length. If just one of these loops breaks then the helix will unravel or unwind itself from the fabric resulting in fabric failure.
  • the present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem.
  • a papermakers fabric having at each end a respective seaming body each comprising a plurality of individual parallel loops, the loops being joined by a connector, the two sets of loops being interdigitatable and capable of union by a pintle wire so as to form a flexible joint.
  • more than one seaming body may be provided in the cross-machine direction of the fabric.
  • the loops and associated connector are preferably provided as an integral unit usually by way of a single moulding.
  • Injection moulding is the preferred method of manufacture, ideally from the connector.
  • manufacture may be by way of extruding end-on and machining the extruded mould to cut out slots in order to form the individual loops.
  • the seaming bodies of the invention may be made to precise dimensions thus ensuring that the two interdigitating sets of formations will mate perfectly. Unlike conventional systems there is no danger that two neighbouring loops will become mated in a gap between two loops on the opposite fabric end. Thus a constant permeability exists along the seam.
  • the dimensions of the loops of the seaming bodies of the invention are greater than known designs thus providing superior strength.
  • a seaming body may be secured to an end of the fabric by running selected machine direction yarns from the fabric and around the regions of the connector lying intermediate to the loops and then weaving the yarns back into the fabric. Thus there is no sewing within in the loops and damage of the loops is prevented.
  • the seaming body may be used on its own, or in conjunction with one or more other spiral elements in order to provide strength in seam regions subjected to high stress.
  • the molecular orientation of the seaming body moulding material is in line with the formed loop in order to provide maximum strength in the machine direction.
  • Any polymer having reasonable hydrolysis resistance may be used for the seaming body, e.g. polyesters, polyamides, PEEK or liquid crystal polymers.

  • Fig.5 is a plan view of two ends of a dryer fabric to be connected by a plurality of seaming bodies in accordance with the invention.
  • a flat woven dryer fabric 10 is made endless by interdigitating the loop formations 11 of seaming bodies 12,13 provided at the free ends of the fabric 10 and inserting a pintle wire 14 into the tunnel formed by and between the loops 11.
  • Each seaming body 12,13 comprises a plurality of parallel loops 11 arranged vertically and extending forwardly of a rod connector 15.
  • the rod 15 and loops 11 are formed as a single integral unit by injection moulding.
  • the loops 11 are elongate rather than circular in elevation.
  • the preferred dimensions A to J of the seaming bodies 12,13 are set out below.
  • the seaming body is attached to the fabric end by passing machine direction yarns around the rod connector for the loops and weaving the yarns back into the fabric.
  • One seaming body may be provided at each fabric end.
  • a series of seaming bodies 16,17,18,19,20,21 may be provided at each fabric end.
  • each seaming body engages a similarly sized seaming body provided at the opposite fabric end and a like number of seaming bodies are provided at the fabric ends.
  • different numbers of seaming bodies and differently sized seaming bodies may be used.
