Such catheters involve the transmission and reception of ultra ⁇ sonic waves through the catheter's walls and especially through a "window" after the catheter has been worked into various body conduits.

  • the septum can be a cylindrically-shaped plug which can receive a needle-tipped syringe that is filled with an acoustically transmitting fluid. While such mechanisms for filling the catheter with transmission fluid have proven successful, I have found that the use of a hypodermic needle to inject the fluids can be eliminated through the use of the acoustic septum and window of the present invention.

Abstract

Cathéter d'exploration diagnostique de l'intérieur du corps au moyen de l'émission et de la réception d'ondes ultrasoniques. Le cathéter comporte une extrémité distale (16) insérable dans le patient et une extrémité proximale (20) et est muni d'une gaine de cathéter allongée comprenant une section de transmission des ultrasons (13) adjacente à l'extrémité distale. Il comporte par ailleurs un réservoir disposé à l'intérieur de la gaine et adjacent à l'extrémité distale. Une membrane cassable (15) est disposée à l'intérieur de la gaine et isole le réservoir de l'intérieur de la gaine. Un liquide (12) est disposé à l'intérieur du réservoir, où il est retenu par la membrane cassable. Un transducteur (11) servant à émettre et recevoir les ondes ultrasoniques vient rompre la membrane en se glissant dans la gaine, ce qui fait que le transducteur va baigner dans le liquide et assurer la transmission sonique à l'intérieur du cathéter.
