Abstract

A tie device includes a strap (10) formed with transversely extending teeth (15) on at least one side. Each tooth has a cross sect ion of generally wedge-like shape defined by an extended sloping face (16) and a short face (17) more nearly perpendicular to the surface of the strap. A separate buckle member (11) has two slots (13) to receive and allow advancement of the two ends of the strap therethrough to a desired extent but from which the strap cannot be retracted.

Description

TIE DEVICE
This invention concerns a tie device of the kind used to secure a bundle of cables or the stem of a plant to a stake, for example.
A well-known such device comprises a plastics strap having teeth on one side and integrally formed with a buckle member into which the strap may be inserted and advanced to a desired extent but from which the strap cannot be extracted.
Such known devices, particularly where the strap is of extended length - up to 1 m or more, are costly to produce. They can only be produced by injection moulding and tooling costs are very high.
It is an object of the invention to produce a tie device of this general kind, but at low cost.
According to the present invention there is provided a tie device comprising a strap of plastics material formed with transversely extending teeth on at least one side, each tooth having a cross-section of generally wedge-like shape defined by an extended sloping face and a short face more nearly perpendicular to the surface of the strap, and a separate buckle member having two slots to receive and allow advancement of the two ends of the strap therethrough to a desired extent but from which the strap cannot be retracted.
Preferably, the strap is formed from an extended length of plastics material. Preferably, the buckle member is made of plastics material, which may be an injection moulding.
Preferably, the transversely extending teeth are formed on each of the sides of the strap. More preferably, the sloping faces extend in opposite directions on the two sides of the strap.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, one form of device embodying same. Of the drawings:-
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the device; and
Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the strap of the device on the line II-II of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the device comprises a strap 10 of any desired length and a separate buckle number 1 1 having two slots 13 and 14 therethrough adapted to receive and have advanced therethrough to a desired extent the opposite ends of the strap 10.
As best seen from Figure 2, two sides of the strap 10 are formed with transversely extending teeth 15.
Each tooth 15 has a cross-section defined by an extended sloping face 16 and a short face 17 more nearly perpendicular to the surface of the strap to give a general wedge-like form. The sloping faces 16 extend in opposite directions on the two sides of the strap 10.
The slots 13 and 14 in the buckle member 1 1 are generally a clearance fit for the strap 10 at its narrowest thickness, such that the two ends of the strap may be inserted into the slots 13 and 14 and advanced therethrough (this involves some plastic deformation of the parts) to a desired extent such that they cannot be retracted.
The strap 10 is formed by extrusion, the teeth 15 being formed by passage of an extruded ribbon through the nip between opposed toothed wheels whilst the ribbon remains maleable.
The buckle member 11 is formed by injection moulding.
The strap 10 may be extruded as a continuous length which is cut into required sizes.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations being possible, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.

Claims

1. A tie device comprising a strap of plastics material formed with transversely extending teeth on at least one side, each tooth having a cross-section of generally wedge-like shape defined by an extended sloping face and a short face more nearly perpendicular to the surface of the strap, and a separate buckle member having two slots to receive and allow advancement of the two ends of the strap therethrough to a desired extent but from which the strap cannot be retracted.
2. A tie device according to Claim 1 wherein the strap is formed from an extruded length of plastics material.
3. A tie device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the buckle member is made of plastics material.
4. A tie device according to Claim 3 wherein the buckle member is an injection moulding.
5. A tie device according to any of the proceeding claims wherein the transversely extending teeth are formed on each of the sides of the strap.
6. A tie device according to Claim 5 wherein the sloping faces extended in opposite directions on the two sides of the strap.
