Definitions
- the present invention relates to a paperboard retaining device for a plurality of articles.
- the articles are known in the industry by the term "gable-top aseptic bricks".
- the articles are cartons having generally perpendicular walls except at the top where there are two oppositely disposed top walls which are angled towards each other from adjacent side walls.
- the top walls panels meet, normally centrally, at an upwardly projecting flange which usually extends continuously from the front to the back of the carton.
- a paperboard device for retaining together at least two articles of the aforementioned type, at least two of which are disposed side by side with the flanges parallel to each other, the device comprising a top panel, two oppositely disposed side panels hingedly connected thereto and two oppositely disposed end panels projecting downwardly from said top panel, whereby in use the top panel lies across the flanges of the articles, the end panels are adhesively secured to the bricks and the side panels are hinged under the top panel and engage in the angles between the flanges of the outermost articles and the outermost top walls of said outermost articles.
- end panels are adhesively secured to front or rear end walls of the articles.
- adjacent side and end panels are connected by gusset means.
- said gusset means comprises a single gusset panel which is hingedly connected to both adjacent panels.
- the top panel of the device is generally rectangular and said end panels extend from opposite sides of the top panel and flare outwardly from the fold lines connecting them to the top panel .
- adhesive is only applied along a lowermost edge of the end panels.
- the end panels are perforated above the lowermost edge such that tearing along the perforations allows much of the device to be removed from the articles.
- the perforations define tear strips. It is also possible to incorporate handle means and this may be in the form of holes formed in the top panel.
- said lowermost edge of the end panels is divided into sections such that tearing of the perforations automatically results in separation of the articles from each other.
- the present invention also provides a blank for producing such a device as well as a device and articles in combination.
- Figure 1 is a blank according to the present invention for producing an article retaining device
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of a device in combination with two articles.
- Figure 3 is a side view of the figure 2 arrangement
- Figure 4 is a front view of the figure 2 arrangement
- Figure 5 is a cross section on line V-V of figure 3.
- each carton 12 has two side walls 13 and two end walls 14 which extend upwards from a base.
- the top of the carton 12 is folded and secured in such a way as to present two top walls 15 which are angled inwardly from the opposite side walls 13 and meet at a centrally located upstanding flange 16.
- the flange extends continuously the length of the side walls 13.
- Such packs come in a variety of sizes, for example one litre or two litres. It is sometimes desirable to sell such cartons 12 as a multipack. Also it is often required that the cartons 12 are palletised such that layers of the cartons 12 in their upright condition are stacked on top of each other. In one known arrangement, foamed polystyrene supports of triangular section are provided in the valleys formed by adjacent cartons, thereby providing a generally planar surface for the next layer of cartons. This results in considerable wastage of materials.
- the blank 10 has a top panel 17 formed with two handle holes 18.
- Optional creases 19 are shown extending generally from the corners of the top panel 17 towards the inner corners of the holes 18. Such creases 19 can improve the handling characteristics of the carton in use.
- Two side panels 20 are hingedly connected to the top panel 17 along parallel, oppositely disposed folds 21.
- Two end panels 22 are hingedly connected to the top panel 17 along parallel, oppositely disposed folds 23.
- the end panels 22 flare outwardly from the folds 23 and gusset panels 24 are hingedly connected in the angles between adjacent side and end panels.
- the end panels Remote from the folds 23 the end panels are provided with edge panels 25.
- Immediately above the edge panels 25 on each end panel 22 are a parallel pair of lines 26 of perforations which define a tear strip 27. Tearing of the tear strip 27 separates the edge panels 25 from their associated end panel 22.
- the blank 10 is attached to a pair of cartons 12 disposed adjacent each other in touching relationship with their flanges 16 parallel to each other.
- the blank 10 is placed over the cartons 12 such that the top panel 17 engages the top edges of the flanges 16 and is orientated such that the end panels 22 can be folded downwardly into contact with the end walls 14 of the cartons 12 and the folds 21 overhang the flanges 16.
- Adhesive is applied to the edge panels 25 and these are secured to the end walls 14 of the carton.
- the gusset panels 24 are folded and the side panels 20 are folded inwards such that the side panels are folded under the top panel 17 at an angle thereto.
- the chosen geometry is such that in the folded position, the free edges of the side panels 20 remote from the folds 21 engage securely in the angle between the flange 16 and the outermost top walls 15. The securing of the edge panels 25 effectively locks the pack into this position.
- the device 11 retains securely the cartons 12 in a multipack form and that the majority of the device 11 can be removed, thereby separating the cartons 12, by pulling the tear strips 27 at both ends.
- the perforations 26, and thus the tear strips, could however be omitted and possibly replaced with instructions to cut along a line or with a single line of perforations.
- the side panels 20 impart strength, rigidity and integrity to the pack when being carried and also provide support for the top panel 17 when weight is applied from above, for example in palletisation.
- the side panels 20 provide a further area for advertising or other printing and, by virtue of their support of a large top panel 17, maximise the area for printing on the top panel.
- the side panels 20 can also assist in ensuring that the cartons are correctly aligned next to each other in touching relation.
- the arrangement shown is for two cartons 12 located side by side, but the arrangement could be readily adapted for three or more cartons located side by side.
- the adhesive bond on the end walls 14 of the cartons 12 would hold them all together whilst the top panel 17 and side panels 20 would operate in the above described manner on the flanges 16 of only the two outermost cartons.
- the arrangement shown is suitable for a single row of cartons, but it could be adapted for two or more rows of cartons.
- a keel panel or panels would have to be provided between the adjacent end or side walls 13, 14 of the cartons 12 of the two rows and secured to the top panel 17 of the blank 10.
- the keel panel or panels would be adhesively secured to the adjacent end or side walls of all the cartons 12 in the arrangement.
- the end panels 22 of the blank 10 are secured to the front and back end walls 14 of the cartons of the front and rear rows of cartons.
- the side panels 20 of the blank 10 act in the same manner as described before, although it will be appreciated that the flanges 16 of the cartons 12 have to be aligned and parallel.
- top panel 17 it is not necessary for the top panel 17 to extend the full length of the flanges 16 and also it is not necessary for the end panels 22 to extend across the full width of the row of cartons.
