Abstract
In a Hall-Heroult cell for aluminum production, a cryolite-resistant liner comprising: a) between about 75 weight percent w/o and about 95 w/o alumina-silica refractory grain, and b) between about 2 w/o and about 10 w/o of a sealant selected from the group consisting of zinc borate; sulfur; R1 Al/x/2 Siy/2 Oz/2, R2(OH)2, R2CO3, R2SO4: 2H2O, and R2SiO3; wherein: i) R1 is selected from the group consisting of Na, K, and Li, and mixtures thereof, ii) x, y and z are integers between 1 and 16, inclusive, and iii) R2 is selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sr and Mg.
Claims
1. In a Hall-Heroult cell for aluminum production, a cryolite- resistant liner consisting of: i) between 75 weight percent w/o and 95 w/o alumina-silica refractory grain, and ii) between 1 w/o and 10 w/o of a sealant selected from the group consisting of feldspar and nepheline.
2. The liner of claim 1 wherein the sealant consists of feldspar.
3. The liner of claim 2 wherein the feldspar comprises between about 1.5 w/o and 6 w/o of the liner.
4. The liner of claim 3 wherein the feldspar is less than 75 microns (less than 200 mesh) .
5. The liner of claim 3 further comprising between 0.5 w/o and 4 w/o alumina.
6. The liner of claim 3 further comprising between 0.5 w/o and 4 w/o fine silica.
7. The liner of claim 3 wherein the alumina-silica refractory consists of mullite.
8. A cryolite-resistant refractory composition consisting of: i) between 75 weight percent w/o and 95 w/o alumina-silica refractory grain, and ii) between 1 w/o and 10 w/o of a sealant selected from the group consisting of feldspar and nepheline.
9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the sealant consists of feldspar.
10. The composition of claim 9 wherein the feldspar comprises between about 1.5 w/o and 6 w/o of the composition.
11. The composition of claim 10 wherein the feldspar is less than 75 microns (less than 200 mesh) .
12. The composition of claim 10 further comprising between 0.5 w/o and 4 w/o alumina.
13. The composition of claim 10 further comprising between 0.5 w/o and 4 w/o fine silica.
14. The composition of claim 10 wherein the alumina-silica refractory consists of mullite.
15. The composition of claim 10 further comprising between 2 and 10 w/o inorganic cementitious binder.
16. The composition of claim 15 wherein the binder is calcium aluminate.
