Definitions
- the present invention concerns an Emergency Towing System for placement on a vessel, primarily on a ship or offshore installation, where a towline is positioned at a safe distance from the ship in order to facilitate pick-up from towboat or another passing vessel.
- the Emergency Towing System is stowed on deck (bow) of the vessel in a water ⁇ tight, dark compartment fixed to the deck and takes a minimal amount of space.
- No wires, chains or other ropes occupie the space on deck, in mooring eye or on bollard during normal operation of the ship.
- the system has a relatively low weight since it comprises no wires or chains, and is as good as maintenance-free.
- the system is quick and easy to use, not requiring any firing, hauling or fastening to the damaged ship.
- the towline unfurls itself by using a drag anchor which holds back the line and by using movement of the vessel up and down. Use of helicopter for transport of salvage crew to damaged ship is not necessary as the system is in use before evacuation of the ships crew.
- an Emergency Towing System for installation on a vessel, primarily a ship or floating offshore installation, where the towline is brought to a safe distance from the damaged vessel for recovery by a towboat or other passing ship.
- the Emergency Towing System comprises:
- a primary section consisting of: a container with brackets to enable fixing to deck of the vessel either forward or aft and which is equipped with a openable hatch on the front, an axle centrically located in the lengthwise direction of the container and supported at each end and with brake arrangement, - a towline with a first and a second end, the line is wound around the axle in the compartment of the container, which first end is provided with guide wire protruding out of a hole in the hatch of the container, and the second end of the towline is provided with a stopper device which is fixed and stored in the center portion of the axle,
- a secondary section consisting of: a buoy arrangement preferably including a drag anchor and a bowser, which arrangement is designed with a diameter less than the chock eye which is intended to be used for restraining the stopper.
- Fig. 1 shows the initial layout of the system which consists of a primary and a secondary section.

- Fig. 7 is an arrangement sketch showing the system in use wherein the towline is attached to the damaged ship and is about to be picked up by towboat,
- Fig. 8 shows another embodiment of the Emergency Towing System wherein the primary section consists of a protection device housing the rolled-up towline and where drag anchor and buoy are positioned through mooring chock, and
- Fig. 9 shows the towline according to the embodi ⁇ ment of fig. 8 wherein the buoy is attached to a drag anchor.
- the Emergency Towing System consists of a primary section 2 which is a cylindrical container 3 provided with a central axle 5, made of plastic or aluminium/steel and designed in such a way that a floating towline 6, dimensioned according to vessel 14 size, can be wound-up and stored in a compartment of container 3.
- a stopper device (ring) 9 In the one (first) end of the towline 6 is spliced in a stopper device (ring) 9.
- This stopper 9 is dimensioned according to size and strength of the towline and size of the mooring eye (chock eye) 15 of the vessel, and is suitably covered with shock-absorbent material, e.g. a plastic lining.
- the stopper 9 is stored in a pocket on the axle 5 such that cerr -ic rotation of the axle 5 including the stopper 9 is ma: ined during unfurling of the towline 6.
- the stopper 9 is __ ⁇ xed such that under specified force it will be released from the pocket on the axle 5.
- the container 3 is designed with a hatch (4) in the front large enough to allow the stopper 9 to pass through.
- This hatch 4 will resist the same force "in” as the rest of the container 3, but will resist only minimal force "out”.
- On the bottom of the hatch 4 is a hole to allow guide- wire 7, fixed to the main towline 6, to be visible.
- This guidewire 7 is spliced in the main towline 6 outer eye (when the towline is stowed on the axle 5 and the other end is equipped with the stopper 9) .
- the guidewire 7 protrudes through a gasket device approx. 0,5 m out of the hatch 4 of the container 3 and has an eye on its end. Total length of guidewire 7 is determined according to vessel size.
- the container 3 has a removeable top to allow respooling of towline after use.
- the container 3 is provided with a drain hole in the base as well as a rubber mat on deck to receive stopper 9 on the way out.
- a rubber mat is likewise provided on the internal side of the hatch 4.
- the container 3 has also necessary brackets to allow fixing to the deck of the vessel.
- the axle 5 sticks out through the bearings at each end and is equipped with a brake system and cranks (or air winch which can be used during spooling, testing, etc) .
- the following is a description of secondary section 10.
- a drag anchor 12 dimensioned to suit the size of the primary section 2 (available in different sizes) is attached to a combined buoy/flag and reflective device 11, and is stowed in a special wrapped fashion in a cylinder together with the wire (bowsing line) 13 for attaching to the towline 6.
- the secondary section 10 When activating the Emergency Towing System the secondary section 10 will be drawn out through the chock eye 15 (forward or aft of the ship) . Whilst dropping down the secondary section 10 to the sea surface, the drag anchor, buoy, etc. will be released from the cylinder on to the surface of the sea.
- the secondary section 10 is brought out from its storage and the bowsing line 13 together with drag anchor 10, buoy 11, etc. is connected to guidewire 7 which protrudes from the hatch 4 of the primary section 2.
- the secondary section 10 is then pushed through the chock eye 15 and lowered down to the sea. 4.
- the operator of the system must ensure that the drag anchor 12 is functioning if necessary by pulling some of the towline 6 out of the primary section.
- the drag anchor 12 will now pull out the towline 6 and guide away from the vessel until the stopper 9 is pulled against the chock eye 15 to produce the towing point (strong point) of the vessel 14.
- the buoy 11 including bowsing line 13 and drag anchor 12 can now be recovered by the towboat and the ship salvaged. As soon as the drag anchor 12 is activated, no further assistance is required to operate the system and the crew can evacuate the ship.
- a towboat or other passing vessel will be able to pick up the marker buoy 11 including flag, and reach the towline's 6 eye which can be directly attached to towboat's salvage gear.
- This operation should be carried out relatively quickly without danger of collision with damaged vessel as soon as the drag anchor system 12 has pulled the towline 6 away from the damaged vessel.
- the stopper 9 should be marked with details of type, length, strength and max. recommended chock-pull, etc. for the towline 6.
- the primary section 2 is simply a storage compartment under (or above) deck for the towline and drag anchor.
- the secondary section 10 consists of the rolled-up buoy arrangement 11 with necessary details for attachment of the drag anchor.
- the drag anchor 12 is connected to the buoy 11 arrangement and pushed out through the chock eye 15 into the sea.
- Drag anchor 12 folds out and the system functions as above.
- the function of the stopper 9 means that wire/chain is unnecessary, and since the towline eye will be almost half way out of the chock eye 15, rubbing or chafing will not occur.
- Drag anchor 12 with the buoy arrangement makes certain that the towline 6 will be lying away from the damaged vessel farthest from land, if the vessel is drifting towards land. This makes it possible to recover the towline even if the vessel is near to grounding. This system gives the opposite effect of a "blow-out" system where the line would drift towards land. A blow-out system also involves the risk of the towline lying alongside the vessel and thus not being accessible for towboat.
- a blow-out mechanism of necessary size will not be possible to push through chock eye 15, and therefore a connection would have to be made from the outside of the chock eye 15 which will often be difficult.
- Use of the existing chocks forward or aft will not be advisable due to chafing on side of ship and reduced towing effect.
- the Emergency Towing System is very cheap to produce and an excellent arrangement to avoid grounding/shipwreck with consequent economical and ecological losses.
